I have just conducted a shopping experiment, Waitrose vs Asda.....

Went to Asda to do a big shop as needed plenty of cleaning products, cereal etc.

I decided to do a whole shop there, the choice was VERY limited for organic partic meat and fruit, but what there is looks fine. TBH I buy a lot of my meat at the local butcher anyway.

SO - my usual weekly waitrose bill is about £140 (if I buy most of the meat there)

I did thsi Asda shop and it was £98.

Then I keyed every product into Ocado as I unloaded them to see what saving I had made. I used like for like and made adjustments wherever necessary (eg I got organic Lamb Chops 500g, waitrose only did 400g or something so I made up the difference proportionally by adding something else)

The waitrose shop came to £136

Quite a good saving really if you extrapolate it out over a year! Alos have discovered they will deliver for £4 delivery charge

hmm....

Don't we all deserve Waitrose tho?

I can't afford to shop there regularly - but oh how I would love too... if I had the spondoolies

I think it stands for Chatham Avenue which is th enext street down from me Grin

sparklymieow · 06/03/2006 00:08

I get quite upset by the 'chav' comments, I shop in asda, and have brought lots of bits for my new house from argos. Argos is in my budget and Asda is cheap enough for me to do the full week shopping plus treats for the kids. I am not a chav, but am begining to feel that people are labelling me on here as a chav :(

nannyme · 06/03/2006 00:12

I wouldn't get upset sm. If it means anything - which it probably really doesn't - I think the point is you wouldn't care what anyone else thought about your argos, asda, burberry, whatever.

Isn't a supposed chav somebody who is kind of snobby in a cheap way?

I am guessing you don't get flash about your Elizabeth Duke gold?

colditz · 06/03/2006 00:20

SM, people make nasty comments about "chavs" because they lack the imagination and emotional sensitivity to put themselves in another man's shoes.

They are not, and never will be, capable of picturing themselves in a situation where they have to make hard choices. They think hard choices are Private or StateWink

sparklymieow · 06/03/2006 00:21

elizabeth duke gold...burberry pmsl!! I wouldn't be seen dead wearing burberry!! I do have a 'mum' ring from argos, but thats it!! I wear silver rings and they are all from the local goth/ath. shop.. hehe.
I am defo. not snobby about anything, whether its comes from Harrods (well, I can always wish i could afford anything from there! Grin) or argos. Smile

sparklymieow · 06/03/2006 00:23

but I am snobby about my body piercing jewellery. MIL insists on buying me nose studs or belly bars from argos and I just can't wear them, they make me itch because they are so shoddy made.

unicorn · 06/03/2006 00:24

phewwee blimey (escapes)

I've been on a wierd thread I just can't understand.

Let me just argue about shopping for the minute.

nannyme · 06/03/2006 00:27

see, so you are not what you think people are seeing as a chav because you don't care!

If one is a chav i believe one cares very much that you have the latest burberry whatever, loads and loads of Elizabeth Duke BLING!

My mum wears a burberry scarf and me and my sister pol(pmsl) at her because she doesn't get it! If she was wearing it deliberately it would be chavvy, I guess.

I am embarrassed to say that I was snobby enough as a teenager to take my school books to school in a fortnum and mason carrier bag which was well past it! I also refused to be dropped off at the gates in my dad's work van.

My father is a snob (post war deprivation jealousy) and my mother is totally blissfully not. I am somewhere in between I think

unicorn · 06/03/2006 00:29

unicorn just can't handle rows anymore!

EW

sparklymieow · 06/03/2006 00:30

so why do people on here think that everyone in argos or asda is a chav. Yes, I live in a council house Shock and yes I am on benifits double ShockShock and yes, I shop in asda and agros, BUT am not a chav!!!!

sparklymieow · 06/03/2006 00:31

I am a well brought up young lady!! Grin

nannyme · 06/03/2006 00:32

I love how this thread has ended up here from its beginnings! Was also wondering what some Asda MD would make of it. They would probably pay for this kind of information!! i.e. Consumer profiling..

sparklymieow · 06/03/2006 00:32

lol @ unicorn

nannyme · 06/03/2006 00:36

I don't think MOST people on here really think that, it is just one of those not-very-amusing-really-but we-(nearly)-all-chuckle smugly-type stereotypes.

I don't think too many people here are so ignorant and short sighted as to believe that one or two aspects of your social situation brand you as a certain 'type' of person. However we all identify with social stereotypes to a certain extent - there is no getting away from it, it is what helps us orm our sense of identity!

Main thing is we all value OURSELVES as individuals.

Goldie Looking Chain anyone?

sparklymieow · 06/03/2006 00:40

pmsl, I will therefore ignore the 'chav' comments in future.

rickman · 06/03/2006 07:52

Totally agree with Colditz 12.20 post.

It's not about people being chav's, it's about some people thinking they're just too good to mix with the rabble.

I honestly can't believe the cheek of some people, fancy someone from a council estate going into Waitrose! Totally criminal!

cod · 06/03/2006 09:17

thats intersting cd
i alwso dont buy meat at the supermaket so it is acadmeic if i go to tesco or waitrose
h aev got itnto a witrose habit fo rhte last tow weeks and it has cost me a fortune

harpsichordcarrier · 06/03/2006 09:23

I would rather go to Argos than Harrods any day of the week
Harrods is loathsome

We shop at Ocado (Waitrose delivery) because tbh they are the only reliable delivery service round where we live (have tried Tescos and Sainsbos and lived to regret both, and Asda doesn't deliver locally).
I don't like the term chav either. Just to put the record straight - it's possible to shop at Waitrose and not sneer at or judge people who shop elsewhere.
Agree with HC. Argos any day over Harrods. Our local branch never lets us down.

CountessDracula · 06/03/2006 09:37

can we all shut up about chavs and just talk about shopping?
