I have just conducted a shopping experiment, Waitrose vs Asda.....

Went to Asda to do a big shop as needed plenty of cleaning products, cereal etc.

I decided to do a whole shop there, the choice was VERY limited for organic partic meat and fruit, but what there is looks fine. TBH I buy a lot of my meat at the local butcher anyway.

SO - my usual weekly waitrose bill is about £140 (if I buy most of the meat there)

I did thsi Asda shop and it was £98.

Then I keyed every product into Ocado as I unloaded them to see what saving I had made. I used like for like and made adjustments wherever necessary (eg I got organic Lamb Chops 500g, waitrose only did 400g or something so I made up the difference proportionally by adding something else)

The waitrose shop came to £136

Quite a good saving really if you extrapolate it out over a year! Alos have discovered they will deliver for £4 delivery charge

My mums works at Asda. I do my shopping online at Tesco only because they deliver to my area, Asda currently doesn't.

I dont find Asda is filled with people that I wouldn't see in Tesco, Sainsburys or Morrisons. You get all walks of life in all sorts of shops. The reason you dont see "chavs" in Waitrose is because they have much more sense than to waste money on hyped up food. I once popped to Waitrose for a few items when PIL's were coming for dinner as I couldn't make it to Tesco in time. It cost me twice as much and the food was not superior.

"Chav" pisses me off. It's now a term that snobs use about people that they look down on. Chav originally was a term used to coin "fashion victims", those that dress in sports labels / designers / copies and wear tracksuits and baseball caps and "bling" necklaces etc.

According to a teeshirt on www.chavscum.co.uk this is their defintion of chav (rip off of the Trainspotting Choose Life slogans):

"Choose Chav. Choose no job. Choose no career. Choose a dysfunctional broken violent family. Choose a big ing stolen television. Choose cheap cigarettes, crap modded cars, white cider and fake Burberry caps. Choose poor health, high cholesterol and state benefits. Choose a rat infected council estate. Choose no education. Choose tacky flammable market stall sportswear. Choose hungs of 9crt worthless gold jewellery. Choose attacking pensioners for their money so you can get 4 tins of strong Lager and 20 fags. Choose gansta rap and ruling the playground like a tough hood, when in reality you are a ing coward. Choose hanging in a bus shelter with the other losers, spitting on and vandalising everything in sight, stuffing ing junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the age of 30, pishing your last in a miserable council bedsit, nothing more than an embarrassment to the 50 selfish, ed up chav brats you spawned to gain extra benefits. Choose no future. Choose chav"

Glad to see that in the year 2006 we have moved passed judging people on their image, where they live, where they shop and what they wear.

Haven't read the thread but get the jist it's turned class wise which i refuse to get into as last time i ended in tears. (pregnancy hormones though i fear)
Anyway, i like Asda for the clothes and i always come away with something pretty for dd's. BUT i don't like their meat at all.
I like Morrisons for their selection and they always have nice organic veg.
I shop however in Sainsburies BECAUSE when i had dd2, Asda and Morrisond didn't have trolleys to accomodate a toddler and very young baby, (seats too upright for newborn and car seat trolley meant dd1 being dragged round. I complained to both manah=gers and was promised they'd both look into it and get onto their purchasing department then as soon as i hung up, forgot all about me.

Silly people must lose a fortune,
SO these days i am moslty shopping in Sainsburies .

Hijack

CD - are you moving? Did you hear that I am about to become a SAHM?

Oh yes, and Asda is cheaper than Waitrose - I did a price comparison and felt embarrassed that I'd fallen for Waitrose's charm - but the petrol it costs me to get to Asda doesn't make up for the savings on Tescos. However, at Lidl you can fill your trolley and only pay £20! I've cut my bills from £80 per week down to £20 - £40!

Caligula · 06/03/2006 10:07

I like Asda George skirts age 11-12 because they fit me.

CountessDracula · 06/03/2006 10:08

Where is lidl? What is it like???

You have missed all the Lidl threads on here?Shock

Elf1981 · 06/03/2006 10:10

sorry CD my Chav post took a long time to write!

harpsichordcarrier · 06/03/2006 10:11

pretty much all supermarket meat is disgusting
Waitrose is OK
sometimes I am tempted by some sort of special offer and I ALWAYS regret it
there's no Asda near me, not for miles away. but there is a distribution centre in our town and they are extremely generous to community projects (NCT etc) - always giving us boxes of stuff

Elf1981 · 06/03/2006 10:12

Angeliz - Asda have got new trollies, got a baby seat and toddler seat on them. Plus fab new trollies for car seats to go on. I noticed Morrisons had new ones too when I went the other week.

Angeliz · 06/03/2006 10:13

Yes. the Asda near me has them now but there's a massive one half an hour away that doens't . Morrsions my way still don'e.

fisil · 06/03/2006 10:13

Lidl is in Morden - I'm sure there's one nearer you. If you thought Asda was bad for choice and organic, thought, don't touch Lidl.

Well, almost SAHM. I just miss my boys so much, now that ds2 is getting interesting. I have 30 years left to have a career, and only 3 years left with little pre school kiddies - so I want to spend time with them. I never thought I'd feel this way - all soppy and Mumsy, but I do, and so I'm going to do it! At the moment dp is subsidising me to go to work, so the money won't be any different. I will tutor in the evenings and do supply, consultancy and training a max of one day a week. Quite excited actually!

Wordsmith · 06/03/2006 10:28

I love Waitrose and used to do my weekly shop there and then online when I discovered Ocado - but it is bloody expensive. I now do the weekly shop online at tesco and it is at least £20 less than Ocado. Asda don't deliver round here and that is my criteria for shopping - it must be online! However, Ocado is head and shoulders above Tesco when it comes to reliability and customer service. I do occasionally use them when they offer me £15 off.

Tesco online's veggies are better than Ocado's, and you can buy them loose rather than prepacked. However the meat is less good, still tend to go in person to Waitrose of the butcher's for that.

Can't believe that chav turn this thread has taken.

Asda in Taunton have a 4 seater trolley, was a life saver!!! Grin

nannyme · 06/03/2006 14:26

I don't get why lots of the 'new' trollies in various supermarkets don't have brakes on the baby versions.

nannyme · 06/03/2006 14:27

CAn you realistically do a weekly shop in lisl or is it just for top ups really? Is it like aldi?I like aldi biscuits!

PeachyClair · 06/03/2006 14:30

I can do a weeks shop in Lidl sure, meat I get at butchers in amonthly shop though, but Lidl meat (IMO) nicer than Asda / Tesco.

Lidl and Aldi look cheap, and are indeed, but their products actuallya re often yum. Aldi pasta sauce for example, and Lidl do little pots of stewed fruit that make a great alternative to yoghurts for my lactose intol ds1 and ds3, AND a pack of 4 costs less than 2 jellies in Asda!!

Gingerbear · 06/03/2006 14:35

I used to do Tesco /Sainsbo online but was annoyed at poor veg/fruit quality. Occasionally do Asda - but it is 13 miles away.
Now a Lidl / Aldi convert.
My maximum spend there for basics is £30
I then buy organic veg, local bakers/ butchers (support the local shops)
Total week's bill is £60 (used to be £120)

pacinofan · 06/03/2006 14:36

We have a Waitrose recently opened fairly near us but wouldn't dream of shopping there, way too expensive.

We live semi-rural so choice is limited (we choose Tesco) but if we had an Asda nearby would def. shop there. Have just discovered Lidl, and agree with previous posters that some things are good quality/value and some aren't. I wouldn't recommend buying meat there, but I have to say I have found their fresh produce very acceptable.

Oh, and if favouring the likes of Tesco, Asda and Lidl make me a 'chav' (whatever that is) then so what, couldn't care two hoots if I am judged on where I shop. Fwiw, I regularly spot a local heart consultant and GP in Lidl - both raving about the bargains to be had in the wine dept. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for us!

fimbo · 06/03/2006 14:40

My local Asda have got rid of their cafe and installed MacDonalds instead!
