Why are oldtimers so unwelcoming to newbies

NameChanged123 · 01/03/2006 14:26

I am a new member of mumsnet and was really pleased to find it. Unfortunately I have found that most of you oldtimers aren't very welcoming to newbies. Everytime I post on a thread I get ignored, you oldtimers only reply to each other. Sometimes I post on a thread and it just stops all together. I just think it would be nice to make newbies feel more welcome

Papillon · 01/03/2006 14:51

Suck up to ME! Suck up to ME!
I've NEVER been sucked up to....where can I complain about that?

Blu · 01/03/2006 14:53

No ks, but you are flung into contact with people with mad ideas about tablecloths.

jco · 01/03/2006 14:56

i'm a newbie, i found that i'm also a wonderful thread killer BlushI must say though that even though i'm new when i made one post about something that was really upsetting me i was really touched by all the responses i got.

I'm doing a marvellous job of killing threads.... HELP!

jco · 01/03/2006 14:59

by the way mythumbelinas or anyone else what is a 'namechanger'?

WigWamBam · 01/03/2006 15:01

A namechanger is someone who changes their name ... sometimes to play around on silly threads, sometimes to post nasty things.

Flip · 01/03/2006 15:02

I'm an oldie. I just escaped eighteen months ago. I'm back for perhaps one day only and no ones said Hi. Wink When I'm feeling crap and my world turns to $&8% I turn to mumsnet. Everyones welcome. Try meeting some of these peoples in person. That's weird!

harpsichordcarrier · 01/03/2006 15:04

a family of love and knuckles - I like that Papillon
I second everything that has been said so far about just getting stuck in and trying not to let things get to you.
I am not an oldtimer by an means (7 months ish) but I do know some people better than others. that's just the way of the world.
oh and we ALL kill threads. it's a kind of probability thing, I think. I have stopped caring about it.
welcome who ever the F you are Smile Wink

poppadum · 01/03/2006 15:11

Oh, thank you, Blu.( simpers) See, I am sucking up to you. Wink

also, namechanged, you should come on to the books or movies thread. a non-controversial place to air your views, unless, of course, you have a passionate love of Jeffrey Archer's work.

Boopert · 01/03/2006 15:14

Opps. Managed to kill at least three threads already.....
Think i'll give up MN for a while....Blush

Kathy1972 · 01/03/2006 15:17

weaning spoons and tableclothes.... please explain someone!

Bugsy2 · 01/03/2006 15:28

Sorry if you feel that way. Certainly not intentional on my part. TBH, I can't even keep up with the name changers, let alone try and work out who is new.
Hope you feel better now - look at how many people have responded to your thread! Grin

Enid · 01/03/2006 15:32

lol

love and knuckles

harpsichordcarrier · 01/03/2006 15:35

kathy I will find you a link to thise famous thread later when the archive search is back on...

MrsBadger · 01/03/2006 15:42

now, these were all before my time so I take no responsibility for getting all the details wrong, and the archive is down so I can't check. This is not meant to re-open any debates, merely to fill people in:

Weaning spoons - this was a huge, long-running and vigorous debate about (I think) whether the type of spoon you use has an effect on your child's attitude/teeth/happiness/future marriage prospects etc. Or indeed if you shouldn't use a spoon at all but go straight to finger foods. Or something. Very heated all round.

Tablecloth - at school pickup time, one MNetter was accosted by an apparently mad woman (possibly the school secretary), who, apropos of nothing, demanded to know if she had a spare tablecloth. This sparked a thread so long and surreal it actually made Discussions Of The Day on the homepage, and is \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?reverse=1&topicid=43&threadid=20530&rnd=657122574586944\here} if you have a spare hour or two...

namechanged123 · 01/03/2006 15:45

I think I was maybe being a bit paranoid! Thank-you for all responding to my post, I actually feel a little better now. I thought I was the only one who could kill a thread stone dead! Its nice to know that its not just me!

OP posts:
Tortington · 01/03/2006 15:53

i find they smell different - like errr fresh meat.

Caligula · 01/03/2006 15:55

'I'm afraid I don't have a tablecloth in my possession'

Thank you Mrs Badger for the link. Pure bliss.

Kathy1972 · 01/03/2006 15:55

So relieved that is all you meant about the tablecloth. Thought there must be a whole debate about what sort of tablecloth we should be using, and I would have to read through the entire thread, and any relevant research, and think very hard about my tableclothing habits, and make sure I use the right kind of tablecloth in future or risk being a Bad Mummy.

Caligula · 01/03/2006 15:57

People who have yellow tableclothes have dysfunctional children. Wink
