Findo Gask is a brilliant name, it must be ancient.

Places like Enzie and Kirkgunzeon anyone?

GentleOtter, ah the wee railway at Arbroath! Forgot about that too. This thread is making me remember so many little things from my childhood that I forgot, 'tis lovely!

and when someone says "och, he's got a face like a horse in a huff" they're usually absolutely right!!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/08/2011 22:45

zukie, a few years ago I read a restaurant review (or it may have been the Chippie of the Year in the Sunday Post Grin) for the chippie in Inverbervie, and I was delighted that it supported my childhood memories.

Yama · 12/08/2011 22:48

Is that a real place Zukiecat?

I believe Findo Gask in actually 2 very small villages callled Findo and Gask. Still, seeing the sign means I am on my way to Perth.

Thanks for the link Scottishmummy.

TapselteerieO · 12/08/2011 22:53

Favourite Scottish writers too,

I like them all Alasdair Gray, Kelman, Tom Leonard and Violet Jacob plus Robert Louis Stevenson and James Hogg.

I am away to you tube , Tuttie Frutti, Deacon Blue, Mary's Prayer and Strawberry Switchblade...

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/08/2011 22:54

Temple of Fiddes.

EsmeWeatherwax · 12/08/2011 22:56

Scottishmummy that never fails to make me laugh. Have you seen ? Very funny....

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/08/2011 22:57

Re Scottish writers, Val McDermid, Christopher Brookmyre, Stuart McBride....

[love Tartan Noir]

mawbroon · 12/08/2011 22:58

Ah yes, Kerrs miniature railway. He was my history teacher at school. I took ds1 on the railway last year, it's still on the go!

I didn't know that Sunnyside had closed. I remember going there as a child with the dancing school to entertain the patients. We might have gone to sing christmas carols with the sunday school as well.

Yama · 12/08/2011 23:02

Tutti Frutti! I loved Tutti Frutti. Can't believe they never repeated it and you can't buy it. Victor Meldrew saying "Ms Toner". Pure magic.

scotgirl · 12/08/2011 23:02

The people.

Lived in London, Glasgow & Edinburgh.

Glasgow is by far the friendliest. I miss the openess and directness you get when you live there - it isn't weird to chat to strangers. Two or three mums in a playpark - or course you start to chat away - normally turns out you have some kind of connection anyway! I had lots of park aquaintances when I lived in Glasgow which was nice - made you feel very settled.

I have tried to take some of this with me to Edinburgh - people not so chatty though! I think some of them think I might be a bit weird! It is a much more visually beautiful city though.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/08/2011 23:04

Yama, you can buy Tutti Frutti! I did. Grin

And yes, it's as good as you remember it being.

scotgirl · 12/08/2011 23:05

Re Tutti Frutti - you can buy it - me mam has the dvd.

OldLady I could kiss you. I must've been in my early teens when I saw it. It really had an effect on me. Not sure what that effect was ...

GentleOtter · 12/08/2011 23:07

Article in yesterday's Courier about Sunnyside

Yama · 12/08/2011 23:07

And thanks Scotgirl too.

LadyBeagleEyes · 12/08/2011 23:10

I've never seen that before Esme, how did I miss it?
So, so funny and in my experience of trying to give my details on the phone to some disembodied voice, very, very true.
And my Scottish accent isn't that strong.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 12/08/2011 23:12

Actually Zukiecat it's 'definItely! Grin
There is a lack of all things scots in my life since my Gran passed away.
I love the sound of someone from Edinburgh saying 'turkey'! I love being called 'Hen' or 'Bairn'.
'it's been years since anyone asked me "do you think I came up the Clyde on the back of a Finnan Haddie?"
Other things I love about Scotland?
David Tennant,
Gerard Butler,
Jack Vettriano,
Volcanoes!

lostlady · 12/08/2011 23:14

Mm, second Visocchi's ice cream, and Fisher & Donaldson coffee cream towers [greedy emoticon]

And music: seeing live music in Scotland is so much better.

And the Wickerman festival in unspoilt countryside; lochs; the wild sea on the West Coast; the smell of wet pine trees; Edinburgh; fresh scallops; quiches in a pie case; the Modern Art Gallery in Edinburgh....

LadyBeagleEyes · 12/08/2011 23:16

Bloody Hell, Grin Tutti Frutti.
How was that never repeated? Probably the best series on BBC Scotland ever.
Please convince me that if I buy the dvd to watch with my 16 year old son, it'll be as good as I remember it to be.

ellie02 · 12/08/2011 23:16
