Don't remember a helter skelter sorry, just a witches hat roundabout thing, and one of those big long rocking horses.

Lostintransmorgification you need a wee trip home! I agree with everything you said, but I would also have clootie dumpling with breakfast which my Irish dh finds a little strange.

TapselteerieO · 12/08/2011 21:53

Piffpaffpoff, I thought the witches hat was at the Glen, with the big long rocking horse thing?

dementedma · 12/08/2011 21:53

ooh you are right. The Bruce Festival isn't until the 26th!! Blush
Bloody hell - i was sure it was tomorrow. Takes MN to put me right.
yes, the hamster wheels were at the bottom of what we called the public park, but they were dismantled. Do you remember the very high slide that used to be in the playpark bit of the Glen? and the peacocks? The paddling pools?
And swimming at the Carnegie pool? The water was a murky green and the changing rooms made of stone and were freezing!!!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/08/2011 21:55

There was a helter skelter in Arbroath, when I was a child. (1960's)

Or was it Stonehaven? Confused Blush

handsomeharry · 12/08/2011 21:55

Carnegie Baths were absolutely horrible - I developed a life long loathing of water there. We used to go to Kirkcaldy Baths for a bit of luxury. Grin

TapselteerieO · 12/08/2011 21:55

handsomeharry I have looked a few times (not recently) at friends reunited but nae luck so far!

TapselteerieO · 12/08/2011 21:57

We went to Kirkcaldy swimming too, I remember the animal houses in the Glen.

LadyBeagleEyes · 12/08/2011 22:00

Demented, you're right, but the thread is about what we love about Scotland.
I'm lucky enough to live in a very beautiful part of the Highlands with single track roads, pine martens (they love bread and jam), and deer roaming into the garden in the winter. And sea eagles Smile
And some of the best seafood in Europe. Today I bought some huge langoustines at a local fete which were freshly caught today.
I've just had them in garlic butter with fresh bread .
But we also have midges.

Pleb1969 · 12/08/2011 22:01

I have only ever been to Scotland once, and that was last month to scatter my father's ashes on the river Avon at Ballindalloch - the place where he caught his very first salmon. The countryside was breathtaking and we stayed in the Delnashaugh hotel which was lovely and did amazing food (had over 50 types of whisky in the bar too!). Must go back to Scotland again, loved it!

dementedma · 12/08/2011 22:03

Kirkcaldy baths for us too! much posher, with the wee baskets to put all your clothes in. it actually hasn't changed much and I think is now due a major refurb.

There's still what think is a very high slide in the glen - I close my eyes when ds goes on it!!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/08/2011 22:11

Cheers, zukiecat. Grin I lived in Montrose as a child and the helter skelter was a regular stopping place when visiting relatives further north; it seemed to be the furthest we could go without one of us puking in the car.

And fish and chips at Inverbervie.

mawbroon · 12/08/2011 22:12

omg OldLady. I am from montrose. wonder if I know you??...

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 12/08/2011 22:12

I left Montrose in 1971, mawbroon.

makemineapinot · 12/08/2011 22:26

Just moved back after 20 years away

the wee sail to Millpoprt for the annual photie on the Crocodile rock - and ice creams from nardinis after!
I can afford to go back to uni as a single mum and still feed my kids!
Black pudding suppers - but having to ask for a mini supper as the normal one comes with 2 full size black puddings and enough chips to feed a small army!
The humour and the fact that people spaek to each other!
the humour and sense of belonging - even if you're furrin!! (foreign)
The scenery
Empty fantastic beaches
Arran from the Ayrshire coast (again!!! - but it's true!)
The lack of 'keeping up with the joneses'
The freedom my kids now have - they can walk/cycle to school independenty and play outsde till th street lights come on - they are finally experiencing my childhood fom the 70s.
ease of travel to beautiful places
so much.....

Linnet · 12/08/2011 22:28

My home town has been mentioned a few times by people saying that they would love to live here or love coming here, I'm so pleased to hear that :)

Oh and I love all of the things already mentioned on this thread about Scotland.

mawbroon · 12/08/2011 22:29

Ah, well in that case, I won't.
And I've been away longer now than I ever lived there!

TapselteerieO · 12/08/2011 22:34

Random places I like

Glen Doll for camping.
Purner's Brig up by Edzell ( I was always too fairt to jump off it).

The Brown and White Caterthuns when it is misty and you are above the mist.

Anywhere up around Lochinver, so beautiful.

The names of places, Haugh of Urr and Ae.

Oh and one good result from all the rain, fantastic waterfalls.

Yama · 12/08/2011 22:37

Oh, and I love seeing the sign for Findo Gask.

Taysiders in Space.

GentleOtter · 12/08/2011 22:38

I worked at Sunnyside, maw, and was sad to read that it is officially closed today.
Arbroath had a helter skelter and witches hat in the 60's just beside the wee railway.

GentleOtter · 12/08/2011 22:39

set yir tasers tae malky. Grin
