Things that make a shiver go down my spine...
Hearing bagpipes and drums in Glasgow
Driving through Glencoe
Looking at the Cuillins
Gravel voices oak thighed kilt wearing men (faints)
Love tablet (and can make it myself as too many shop bought ones have evaporated milk in the recipe which is just wrong)
Mega Double lollies
Macaroons
Fruit pudding
Clootie Dumplings (made for Christmas and Hogmanay and eaten far too quickly)
Haggis once a year, even though it's cheap and yummy I only ever eat it on Burns Night
Cremola foam
Lorne sausage (aka square sliced)
Any other beef sausage (the first time I saw a pork sausage was in England)
People speaking to you randomly in the street ( your chips smell magic, can I have one?), in shops (that looks lovely on you hen, esp. happens in the sales), on public transport ( ticket guy on the train saying he'd give us our tickets separately just in case we fell out when we went into town!)
The general enthusiasm for life, the cutting sarcasm, the punctuational swearing(ok so that might just be Glasgow), the pride in being Scottish, the willingness to get stuck in (to put a positive slant to Frankie Boyles comment that Glasgow was the place he could guarantee that a passer-by would punch a burning man to the ground).
Nessie (I so want that to be true)
Phrases like "aye um ur" or "no um urny" , "aye, right" , "gonnae no' dae that, gonnae no".
The Proclaimers, Paolo Nutini, Travis, Amy MacDonald, Texas, Deacon Blue, Wet Wet Wet, KY Tunstall, Dougie MacLean...
"I don't know if you can see
The changes that have come over me
And these past few days I've been afraid
That I might drift away
I've been telling old stories, singing songs
That make me think about where I come from
And that's the reason why I seem
So far away today
Let me tell you that I love you
That I think about you all the time
Caledonia you; re calling me
Now I'm going home
And if I shall become a stranger
No it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had
Well I have moved
And I've kept on moving
Proved the points
That I needed proving
I've lost the friends
That I needed losing
Found others on the way
I have kissed the fellas
And left them sighing
Stolen dreams yes there's no denying
I have travelled hard
Sometimes with conscience flying
Somewhere with the wind
Let me tell you that I love you
That I think about you all the time
Caledonia you; re calling me
Now I'm going home
And if I shall become a stranger
No it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had
Now I'm sitting here
Before the fire
The empty room
A forest choir
The flames have cooled
Don't get any higher
They've withered now
They're gone
And I'm steady thinking
My way is clear
And I know what
I will do tomorrow
The hands have shaken
The kisses flowed
And I will dissappear
Let me tell you that I love you
That I think about you all the time
Caledonia you; re calling me
Now I'm going home
And if I shall become a stranger
No it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had"
Ahem, I appear to have something in my eye , spot the ex-pat!
