Where do you hang your laundry?

God, I find the sight of wet laundry draped around the place so bloody depressing. We currently live in a flat so have at least 2 clothes airers on the go in our bedroom at any one time. We're moving to a house but it doesn't have a utility room or spare bedroom. I'll see if I can find some space outside in summer but does anyone have some ingenious solution to allow me to escape the ugliness of dripping washing in winter?

I'll be watching this for great ideas too - at the moment it's all hanging outside on the line, but as soon as it goes cooler it'll all be hanging round - hopefully some will go into the tumbler, but I'm tring to be economical so that we can afford to heat the house when this freezing winter arrives!

A tumble drier?

nailpolish · 01/11/2005 14:41

when i lived in edinburgh i had a tiny flat so no room for tumble dryer or clothes horses - i used to wash my clothes then put them in a big rucksack and take them to the laundrette and use the tumble dryer there

expatinscotland · 01/11/2005 14:41

All over the flat - on racks, hangers, over the bath, etc.

No dryer. No space for one. No garden or communal garden.

I just makes sure I stay bang on top of it so it doesn't build up to more than a couple of loads at any one given time.

we have a utility room. it's got a big clothes airer and also an indoor retractable line, which is great for hanging sheets and towels. my mum has one too and hers hangs over the bath.

a ceiling hanger is a good idea if you are stuck for space - cant remember what my granny used to call them..

auntymandy · 01/11/2005 14:45

a kreel

Lucycat · 01/11/2005 14:46

Lilacbump - my next house, a HUGE Victorian detached mansion will have a laundry room (with maid if course]) in the meantime just

Ours hangs on airers in the kitchen and the aga helps to dry it. The kitchen is quite large though.

nailpolish · 01/11/2005 14:46

no that wasnt it.. must be a regional thing lol

wish i could remember!

doormat · 01/11/2005 14:47

outside and then the drier to iron out the creases

auntymandy · 01/11/2005 14:48

like this?

Easy · 01/11/2005 14:48

oh I sooooo covet an AGA.

I grew up in a house with one, and we had a ceiling hanger thing (we just called it 'the Rack') in the kitchen.

My mum never seemed to have any probs getting the washing dry.

Lucycat · 01/11/2005 14:48

nailpolish · 01/11/2005 14:49

auntymandy · 01/11/2005 14:50

kitchen maid?

NomDePlume · 01/11/2005 14:51

In my lovely big airing cupboard on coat hangers. Duvet covers and sheets get draped over the long bannister upstairs (we have a galleried landing so loads of bannister).

auntymandy · 01/11/2005 14:51

I only know it as a kreel..sorry

Lucycat · 01/11/2005 14:52

Is that your galleried landing overlooking the Great Hall ndp?

dyzzidi · 01/11/2005 14:52

In my house we have a bathroom on the middle floor which we don't use as We have an en suite I just put a maiden up in there and dry clothes in there. I do put towels and bedding over the upstairs bannister. I hate having clothes about the house and although I have a tumble dryer always feel guilty about using it when its not an emergency.

NomDePlume · 01/11/2005 14:52

ROFL ! Hardly, Lucycat....

mommie · 01/11/2005 14:53

am totally with you on how depressing it is to have clothes all over radiators. Our house looks like a Chinese laundry even when it is tidy. We are trying to re-model our boiler cupboard to hang stuff in there. zzzzzzzzz

Lucycat · 01/11/2005 14:54
