Where do you hang your laundry?

God, I find the sight of wet laundry draped around the place so bloody depressing. We currently live in a flat so have at least 2 clothes airers on the go in our bedroom at any one time. We're moving to a house but it doesn't have a utility room or spare bedroom. I'll see if I can find some space outside in summer but does anyone have some ingenious solution to allow me to escape the ugliness of dripping washing in winter?

I only use the tumbler over-night, so cheap electric on economy 7

auntymandy · 01/11/2005 14:57

mine is all almost all the time! I dont think they are expensive as they used to be. I couldnt survive without it..even in summer!!!

nailpolish · 01/11/2005 14:57

i thought cheap leccy overnight was a thing of the past

NomDePlume · 01/11/2005 14:59

I'm determined not to get a tumble drier because I know that if I do, I'll end up using it all the time. It'll make me even more lazy, just like the dishwasher did.

Surfermum · 01/11/2005 14:59

I live in an old cottage and we've converted what was the larder into what I call the "utility room". Ha! It's big enough for the washing machine and the tumble drier on a shelf on top of it. I've never had one, but what about a washer/drier when you move?

When I lived in a flat I had a retractable airer over the bath, and I also used to do try and do all washing on one day then have a trip to the launderette. I used to tell myself that fate was taking me there and I would meet a gorgeous hunk washing his grundies! Never did but it was my incentive to get there.

All goes in teh dryer - it's on all the time as we go through so much washing.

nailpolish · 01/11/2005 15:01

dh had a washer dryer when i met him and it was crap, just seemed to make everything hot but not dry. and they are so expensive

Easy · 01/11/2005 15:02

No, we have always had economy 7, still do. Ask your supplier about it. You might need a new meter tho', our house was already on econmy 7 when we moved in.

We run the dishwasher overnight too, and have a timer for the immersion heater to get hot water cheaper. The hot tank gets boosted by the gas boiler during the day.

NomDePlume · 01/11/2005 15:02

NP, snap (my DH had one too). Washer driers are rubbish

Dropinthe · 01/11/2005 15:02

Tumbledryer everytime unless a sunny day and I big items to hang over my garden banisters!

I have a crush on my tumbledryer!

nailpolish · 01/11/2005 15:04

easy, i put dishwasher and tumble dryer and washing machine on overnight (washing machine has a timer so i can set it to wash at 4 or 5 am) to save money but its dh who says you dont get that anymore

will make enquiries and hopefully prove him wrong

thanks!

Easy · 01/11/2005 15:04

oh and mine is a washer-dryer. it's great. My last one gave probs drying if you forgot to clean the fluff filter now and then. Was that the prob with dh's?

nailpolish · 01/11/2005 15:06

no it was just crap, basically, and had cost a fortune

Easy · 01/11/2005 15:06

Nailpolish, your bill should specify if you are getting charged a night-time rate.

You may have changed tariffs at some time to ignore night-time rates, in which case it's worth looking to see if you can switch back.

nailpolish · 01/11/2005 15:06

we have just moved house easy and are still getting to grips with new supplier to the area etc, so ill have to check

expatinscotland · 01/11/2005 15:09

Those washer/drier things are utter PANTS! They dry for FA and cost a mint to run.

NomDePlume · 01/11/2005 15:09

Generally washer driers are crap because they have tiny drums, that tends to be how the stuff comes out scalding hot but still wringing wet. It isn't being tossed about enough.

nailpolish · 01/11/2005 15:10

ndp, theres nothing worse than a crap tosser, is there?

NomDePlume · 01/11/2005 15:11

lol ! I once called my DH a 'shit packer' in Tescos... I didn't realise what I'd said until I noticed the faces of my fellow shoppers! I meant that he was shit are packing the shopping bags, eggs on the bottom etc etc . He has never let me forget that one.

NomDePlume · 01/11/2005 15:12

'shit at packing the shopping...'

handlemecarefully · 01/11/2005 15:12

Ummm in the tumble drier

Not very environmentally friendly - I'm being lazy, I should put it in the guest room (rarely used) I suppose.

nailpolish · 01/11/2005 15:13

eggs on the bottom tsk tsk

along the lines of 'shit shagger' that one there ndp

pootlepod · 01/11/2005 15:34

Check out lakeland for different drying 'solutions'

whopping airer
sweater drying rack
wall mounted airer
hanger airer - will also save ironing!
pulley one - you can also get these for indoors, some which have 5 lines across IYSWIM.

I also have hanger pegs which I got from lakeland but they don't seem to sell them anymore, they are great for socks etc.

sharklet · 01/11/2005 15:37

When we moved n our house had a fab fitted out landry room filled with an industrial washer and an industrial dryer. They rock! I don't use the dryer much in the summer (apart from fluffing up towels) but in the winter things take so blooming long to dry I tend to use it more.

We have a nifty wall mounted drying rack wich is easier than the old one we used to have which would fold down as soon as you tried to hang something on it or remove something from it.

auntymandy · 01/11/2005 15:55

It doesnt dry fast enough anywhere but the dryer, I can wash and dry at the same time. if I had to wait for it on the line i would only get one load done a day!
