I like the diversity of names we now have, although some mentioned here I personally don't like. When I think of my childhood, there were countless Helens, Karens, Debbies, Gails, Janice (or variations on the name Jane), Catherines etc. Go on, I am bound to have mentioned someone's name here! I have nothing against those names either, but I like the way we seem to have more leeway to express ourselves with names now.

Well my friend is office manager at the local senior school, she's worked there for years and she says each time they get a new intake of students she can look down the list and pick out the ones who are going to be 'trouble' just by their names. She said she thought that they probably feel they have to 'live up to' their unusual name, but DH says it probably says more about the parents and the home life they have, I think he's got a point. Not in all cases of course, I think on the whole people who give their children usual names are lovely caring parents. I'm only quoting my friend......

moondog · 28/10/2005 19:23

Sarah is a nice name, just don't want everyone to be called it (or indeed any other name).

Sarahx2005 · 28/10/2005 19:24

My daughter is called Katherine and it's not very common now She loves her name and we do too. I think they go in trends.

Sarahx2005 · 28/10/2005 19:25

Very true Moondog! I went to a coffee morning last week for cloth nappy users and there were 3 of us called Sarah, it was very confusing when anyone said the name - we all looked round!

noops · 28/10/2005 19:26

we called ds 1 by a very traditional name, but his second name is a bit funny, my sister nealry choked to death when she heard it
however, we ll love it and it just fits him perfectly, , we use it as a double barreled type name. it just suits him really well.
ds2 has a much more sombre second name together with a traditional first name. i am a bit sad and now wish we'd used the second name for both of them. my dh wanted to chose the second name and used one tht was important to his mum
i certainly wanted to call ds2 tiger for the whole of my pregnancy but was dissuaded by the normal people i know.
i live in london and reckon it would hae been fine
i know of a little boy called ACE which wouldn't hvae beenan obvious choice i must admit

sm, i love stella too and was thinking about that for ds2 had he been a girl
sunny was also on my list of faves
it is funny how what some people hate, others love, i fancied moon and stars and weather sorts of names too ut felt it was too much of a chliche to call a cgild rainbow or cloud or sky, stella hoever, is a much better choice.

As an ex teacher Sarah, I know what you mean and it is true to some extent, but in a recent list someone copied out on Mumsnet, I found both my older sons' names. Partly I was astonished about the eldest's name being there as it is pretty uncommon and I can't see how it can have registered highly enough to make any list, but mainly I was just amused as my two boys have never ever been in trouble once in a combined time of 8 years at school, so if teeachers are making assumptions about them because of their names, they will be pleasantly surprised to say the least.

moondog · 28/10/2005 19:29

at byou at your cloth nappie coffe morning sarah..surprised you didn't see me ther-right up my street!

Something that may seem a bit dippy in one language is often quite conventional in another.'Enfys' (rainbow in Welsh) has been around for ages and is as 'normal' as Jane or Elizabeth.

frannykenstein · 28/10/2005 19:31

I read a study once that claimed to show people with unusual names were higher achievers than the average. I can certainly think of situations where it could work for you - e.g. being remembered after an interview. I would also guess people with unusual names might have to develop a more self-sufficient and confident personality, to cope with the extra attention, or teasing, that their name might bring.

tegan · 28/10/2005 19:31

Oh forgot to mention my name is Toni and there isn't a huge amount of us around either

Lonelymum · 28/10/2005 19:31

If I had married a Welshman Moondog, I was going to call my son Gwyn. That is quite common in Wales isn't it?

Sarahx2005 · 28/10/2005 19:33

My children are Katherine Jane (after my sister who funnily enough is Jane Elizabeth which someone has just mentioned), Matthew Robert, Christopher Martin, and Isobel Evie. We wanted to call Izzy 'Evie' but i made the mistake of telling my Mum before she was born and she didn't like it and it put me off. I think it's fab as a second name though. Apart from Izzy the other 3 have second names that are from other family members.
MOONDOG, you could have come if you lived near enough - I'm addicted!

moondog · 28/10/2005 19:34

Yes lm!
I love your little parenting scenarios had you married men from other countries.

Ok..imagine you'd hooked up with a Paraguayan. What would you have called your offspring??

Sarahx2005 · 28/10/2005 19:34

I went to school with a girl called Toni, that was many years ago though!

Lonelymum · 28/10/2005 19:37

moondog · 28/10/2005 19:38

Go on then!

Lonelymum · 28/10/2005 19:38

Yep just, but I don't know who he is! It is a FinBAR thread anyway.
