Ah yes, we used to call spending time in the cafeteria at University 'Kai 101'.

I wanted to call the sluglet Ngaire. Dh vetoed it on the grounds it's impossible to spell or pronounce unless you're a Kiwi. It's her middle name now.

Moondog, Ayesha was the Prophet's favourite wife, so it's not surprising you see loads of scarf wearing Muslim girls with that name in Turkey.

nutcackle · 31/10/2005 12:43

My friends Dd is called Annela which I found a bit odd at the time but it suits her now realy.

My cousins Dd is called Cashel.

Other friends baby recently called Kushi pronounced Kusheye, but she said to his mum, 'yeah but really it's Kushi prounounced Kushee isn't it'

Fimbo · 31/10/2005 12:52

My cousin has just had a little boy called Odin.

teeavee · 31/10/2005 12:52

The Ng is pronounced in the back of the mouth. The usual English pronouncation is Ny - ree

teeavee · 31/10/2005 13:21

ta! i like the sound of it actually

libbyss · 31/10/2005 13:28

My youngest dd is at nursery with a Shallot. That's her name and a boy called Sony (as in PlayStation)

moondog · 31/10/2005 13:43

Yeah I know, slug!(said Little Britain style)

JenumGeranium · 31/10/2005 14:31

My ds2 is called Kai. I didnt know it meant food, but infact is quite fitting as he does nothing but eat!

I have learnt something today!

teeavee · 31/10/2005 14:32

Kai might mean food - but at least he's not called an item of food, like bl*y shallot!

JenumGeranium · 31/10/2005 14:34

true!

Ellbell · 31/10/2005 16:53

I told my bf that I was thinking of calling my dd2 (before she was born) 'Meriel' (which I loved at the time) and she didn't bother to swallow the snort. Put me right off the name. She is called something totally different now.

(Re. bullying because of the name... when we were choosing potential names, my dh had a criterion of what he called the 'getting the crap kicked out of you in the playground' factor. Anything that scored too high (e.g. Gaylord for a boy) was immediately discounted.)

bosscat · 31/10/2005 16:55

my ds1's godfather said he always wanted to name his first born son 'Tarn'. Apparently its a mountain stream or something like that. Both dh and I were gobsmacked.

piffle · 31/10/2005 17:11

I grew up with loads of Ngaires (being a kiwi) also Aroha which means love. There are some gorgeous maori names too
Dp wants to call any son we have to be called Thadius after his ancient Irish many grand grand father....

startingtobehalloweenylover · 31/10/2005 17:21

daniella westbrook has a son called kai
apparently after kookai!

maybe that;s where it came from? lol

JenumGeranium · 31/10/2005 18:54

TBH I'd rather stick with the 'food' meaning!

I mean Kookai! Come on!

Did she really name him after that!?

I think it means 'ocean' in Hawaii. Could be wrong!

Cam · 31/10/2005 19:36

It is indeed PPH, there's a school called Lord Digby's (all-girls, in Sherborne, if I remember correctly?)

princesspeahead · 31/10/2005 20:42

not any more, I think it shut down. in fact I think it used to be in that wonderful building that was on restoration that Enid works in.

but I may be confusing it with another one !!!

spidermama · 31/10/2005 20:48

PMSL at 'Gaylord' Ellbell.
Now that is a big no no.

JanH · 31/10/2005 20:52

DD1 has a friend who used to go out with a boy called Tarl - he is an actor but I think the name came first.

Tarn is a pool in the Lake District, bosscat.

spidermama · 31/10/2005 20:54

I bet everybody calls Tarl 'Karl'. He must have this cnversation most days....
'No that's Tarl. No, not Karl - Tarl. With a T. That's right. Tarl. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz'

Lonelymum · 31/10/2005 20:55

I was speechles when someone I knew named their baby Trevor. I expect half a dozen Mners will now say they are married to a Trevor so I don't want to suggest the name is odd at all, but I do think it is an odd choice for this day and age, and doesn't really suit a baby.

moondog · 31/10/2005 20:56

It's a terrible name lm!!

Lel1972 · 31/10/2005 20:57

Issymum - my friend's middle name is Aneurin, and his brother calls him Anadin! but he was named after Aneurin Bevan.

when my niece was born, and SIL called her Daisy, the whole family thought it was odd (this was just before it became fashionable, we reckon she started the trend!), but now you just couldn't imagine her being called anything else, and think it's lovely.

as a Registrar, I have practised my 'oh, how unusual' face and think I'm quite good at not snorting now! we get lots named after places their parents went to on honeymoon, luckily they've all been quite exotic, can you imagine being called 'Skegness' which is my parents went!! also had one that was being adopted and mum gave him an absolutely awful name that would guarantee him being picked on, saying 'well it'll be changed anyway, so thought I'd have a laugh'. I didn't know whether to cry or thump her - what a cow!
