... when the wife is a full-time GP and the husband a solicitor? I'm just reading "What about me?" by Kate Figes and the narrator in the book is the GP and she moans about not having enough money to buy a decent car or to fix the roof. Now, I estimate that the combined salary of that couple would be about £150.000 a year, wouldn't it? How can that not be enough????????
I know, I know, the woman is the narrator of the book and so it's subjective and you spend what you have so it never feels enough and all that...
but still it puts my back up, am I supposed to empathize with the narrator now over her troubled lot or what???

teeavee · 02/09/2005 13:40

SherlockLGJ · 02/09/2005 13:42

Enid · 02/09/2005 13:45

also couldnt work out why I kept getting a flat front left tyre, turns out the alloy is knackered and I need a whole new wheel

sweetkitty · 02/09/2005 13:50

I have a Dyson and a hand held dirt devil (somewhere) does that make me posh poor

When we had out first house we had the cheapest cylinder that picked nothing up and the rented house we were in had cream shagpile carpets.

DaddyCool · 02/09/2005 13:52

i used to have a car i bought for $50. i couldn't get out of the drivers side, the tyres were bald, the exhaust was shot and every time a rust hole would appear, i put a surf sticker over it. that's the one i got fined for.

NomDePlume · 02/09/2005 13:53

I once saw a Nissan Micra for sale for the grand sum of £10 , that was about 6 years ago, it had an MOT and everything !!!!

DaddyCool · 02/09/2005 13:54

you should have bought it!

NomDePlume · 02/09/2005 13:55

I soooooooo, wish I had. That was the ultimate bargain.

Enid · 02/09/2005 13:55

DaddyCool · 02/09/2005 13:58

sweetkitty · 02/09/2005 13:58

My dad bought a car for £50 once my new trainers cost £60 at the time, he ran it for a year before it broke down and got £45 at the scrapyard for it.

Makes you think doens't it?

NomDePlume · 02/09/2005 13:59

DC, how can you be a poser in a car that lloks like it was crocheted ?!

NomDePlume · 02/09/2005 13:59

looks

DaddyCool · 02/09/2005 14:00

it certainly does. the problems i described came late in ownership. before that i drove it all over america and canada and it ran great for over two years.

DaddyCool · 02/09/2005 14:00

ndp - i fancied myself as a bit of ski-bum.

NomDePlume · 02/09/2005 14:01

awwwwwwwwwww.I always fancied myself as a bit of a surfy chick. Let down significantly by my total lack of surfing skills

DaddyCool · 02/09/2005 14:02

...the fact that the car was so knackered was considered cool. my my aren't those days gone now eh.

NomDePlume · 02/09/2005 14:03

pipe & slippers, grandpa ?

DaddyCool · 02/09/2005 14:03

Enid · 02/09/2005 14:03

can I just mention that dh has a super whizzy car that he loves but somehow feels that my shite car is 'perfect' for a part time working mum of two

NomDePlume · 02/09/2005 14:03

Nose to the grindstone.

tarantula · 02/09/2005 14:13

lol bit like me then Enid Ive got a super whizzy bike that cost twice as much to FIX as dps bike and dds child seat cost to buy (child seat cost nearly as much as the bike too)

(have to say tho taht dps record on keeping bikes is very poor so kinda justified.....something to do with leaving them outside the pub without locking them......tho those days are pretty much over now)

frannyf · 02/09/2005 14:20

Oh bother I missed the hoover discussion bit. Would have been the perfect time to mention that my sister has 2 dysons, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. I'm serious. So that she doesn't have to carry one about.
