Tea Room the Twelfth

Come in, come in, to Tea Room the Twelfth! We now inhabit a rambling log cabin, surrounded by mysterious pine forests and mist-covered mountains (but also, strangely) easily accessible by regulars, new-comers and passing bishops, ferried in by Mellors driving the troika. All the usual rules apply and all are welcome!

Ds likes his dressing gown, but then I did manage to buy him a fleece one in a sale at half price (actually, bought 2, one two sizes bigger!!!), so feel very similar to you.

Although his slippers (from Father Christmas) were OUCH!!! Apparently they stop making proper small children's slippers at size 10/11 and Ds is now closer to a 12 - but he's still only a little boy age wise and I really don't want him to have to 'grow up' in terms of his slippers - ended up with some rather lovely dragons but £££

Almost never have to buy clothes for WRiggle - one of the (only?) benefits of being a Very Old Mother is that we get sacks full of beautiful clothes passed on to us. Often Boden/Monsoon etc, as well as offering from French MIL. She has more party dresses than she could wear in a life time (although a bit short of sensible jumpers and only two pairs of pyjamas).

55 Euros for a dressing gown for a child? Sacre Bleu!, as they probably never used to say. If it's more than £8 in ASDA, forget it.

teafortwo · 08/01/2010 18:45

I just did a search to see what is going on to make bonsoir topic of the day in the tearoom....

Eeeeeeekkk.... Actually, those threads were difficult reading for me...

Paris is a small city... mine and bonsoir's paths do cross in rl.

Really - She is a very nice woman who cares very deeply about her family, she is free thinking which I value in people and I find her very human. She is kind, confident and a true lover of life!

In short - She's a good egg !

UniS · 08/01/2010 19:46

and she is NOT class rep?

evening all.
Nt a sledge to be had in teh whole county in RL it seems, boy gutted by this. UniS kicking herself for Not buying one when I thought about it before Christmas. Will try toys r us ( ghastly place, I've avoided till now) tomorrow on my way to work. Maybe they will have some pink sledges left...

Hurrah for toddler group today. we met, all admitting to wanting to strangle our offspring if we had another day alone with them in the absence of preschool , ate biscuits and the world looked a nicer place. 7 families made the walk to village hall from 3 different villages.

Can I ask mellors to give me a back massage, carrying a heavy back pack across town ( full of shopping) is making its presence felt. the supermarket ( Somerfeild/ Co-Op) I parked at had no salt or bread flour and their drinking chocolate is ghastly so I had to trek over to Lidl, who , of course, had everything that was on my list. Execpt the salt, seems people have been sprinkling table salt on garden paths. Ho Hum, for bread making I shall have to resort to salt crystals, I have those, just dissolve it in the warm water I guess.

CMOTdibbler · 08/01/2010 19:52

It's nice to hear that Tea I have wondered if she was really as she painted herself on here iyswim.

I only know a few women who live in Paris in RL, and as most are doctors, and one is a mad Argentinian with 2 physics PhDs, I don't think they are a representative sample really. But always tricky to know..

In RL, I have swapped my bowl of cereal I should be having (doing a bit of a diet) for a packet of Wotsits and an apple. Works out the same calories, but somehow much more appealing.

DBs house sale has fallen through after 4 months of messing around. Although they can still move to their new house as SILtbs house has sold and they have the money, they are gutted.

PandaEis · 08/01/2010 20:42

hi

good suggestions CMOT on how to deal with HorridMum
sorry about Db's house sale that is poo!! we had the same happen to us about 2 years ago and it does suck bum!!

hello everyone else i have a home-made canneloni with loads of cheese and hazlenut coffee on offer...

its DDs 4th birthday so we have been busy bears we took her to the park to make snowmen but it was far too cold for that as the snow is now just powdery ice and doesnt compact well ahh well... we slipped and slid around the path instead as DD wanted to see the geese they kept falling and slipping on the frozen lake which was quite funny and DD was spoilt rotten with prezzies so she is a happy girl

i second the thought that BA seems quite class-aware on here i have had a few 'discussions' with her in the past which she got quite snippy in

Happy birthday, Pandadaughter!

How amazing that Tea should know B~A~ in real life. What I love about MN (apart from the tea room, naturally) is the intriguing possibility that people may or may not be as they describe themselves. I, for example, am a 73 year old trucker from Hull old biddy. In the same way, I often wonder whether B~A~ - far from wafting into Bonpoint and Laduree - might be pushing an unchic buggy around the farthest banlieue, wearing holey leggings and an acrylic cardigan from Monoprix!

Would anyone like a mulled cider to ward off the cold?

teafortwo · 08/01/2010 21:42

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO PANDA CUB!!!!

msp244.photobucket.com/albums/gg28/subnrg/happy-birthday-cake.gif

What were her bestist pwwesents???

CMOT - I had a post disappear that was telling you that horridmum was ok with me today. I feel it was a phase that is dying out but I also feel less wobbly now I have the cmot technique in my pocket! Thanks xxx

RS - Basically she had been friends with me and it was suggested to me by another Mum who is cross with her too for the same reason I am feeling wobbly with her that having sussed neither of us are rich, that we do not know anyone deeply important in the whole scheme of things (I keep my conacs with Daisy to myself ) and cannot influence people in high places she wishes to move on so is being aggressive so we keep away. I translated it as being working class - it wasn't the Mother's exact words!!!

UniS - bonsoir is not the class rep - would be good if she was though I wouldn't be having such problems!

mistlethrush · 08/01/2010 21:43

Yes please MadBad

Happy Birthday Pandacub!

just worked out Ds's 5th Birthday is in the Easter Hols - and actually thinking Horay! - hopefully lots of people will be away so we can have a nice select bunch to home, together with easter egg hunt (again) etc!!! Last year we did an easter egg hunt with egg pictures - and I sent them home with small eggs in their party bags (lucky parents!!!!)

Sorry Tea, stll havent worked out good way of dealing with HorridMum. What do you have to try to get past her that she causes problems with?

We don't have class reps at the moment. I just make it my aim to speak to the teacher on a very regular basis, given mistlechick's aptitude for picklish behaviour. He got up really keen to do more reading this morning so our reading of Green Eggs and Ham the night before clearly had a very positive effect - he loves books, but normally more keen on looking at the pictures whilst I read rather than trying to do the words - I hope its a real breakthrough (I've not been trying to teach him as I haven't wanted him to learn before others in his class as I don't want him sitting there being bored (like I was) which I think would be really awful with him!)

teafortwo · 08/01/2010 21:44

conacs contacts

CMOTdibbler · 08/01/2010 21:51

Happy Birthday Pandacub !

Horridmum just knew that you wouldn't take any prisoners today Tea. Or she has actually been having some hassle and has now got over it.

Wish I was a child - stables are having a pony snow fun day tomorrow with sledging championships down their hill, pony pulled sleigh and all sorts. I wanna go . But on the upside, it's shopping for shiny stuff with DNiece in the afternoon.

A mulled cider would be lovely MadBad. How's your hip doing ?

teafortwo · 08/01/2010 22:01

I m sorry Madbad - the Bonpoint and Laduree is very true! - Would it help you in overcoming your disappointment if I told you that I am wearing a jumper from Monoprix and have an unchic buggy (that never gets used because one of the wheels is falling off) and live in the banlieue!!!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 08/01/2010 22:08

I'd like to come to the snow fun day too, Cmot! It sounds amazing. Then again, so does the aquamarine shopping. I used to have an aquamarine ring, but do warn dniece that aquamarine is quite soft, so choose a style that's less likely to get knocked or chipped.

My hip's much better, thanks. It took a few days but it's now just averagely decrepit, instead of too painful to move as it was before.

Yay to Mistlechick's reading. It is fantastic when they can read independently and never again have an excuse for saying "I'm bored".

And, Amber, thanks for the validation about the dressing gown. I was beginning to think I was unnaturally stingy and tout le monde is spending 55 euros a pop on toddlers' dressing gowns!

Cheers!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 08/01/2010 22:12

Tea - Sorry, missed your post. Vive le Monoprix, say I!

UniS · 08/01/2010 22:39

pony snow day sound fun. I wanna go too. Shall we get Mellors to rustle up some fat hairy gymkhana ponies from somewhere.

BUYING a childs dressing gown at all raises my eyebrows a bit. Unless 2nd hand. Boy HAS one, a hand-me-down, but refuses to wear it. Despite it having bob the builder on. He prefers a red fleece hoodie that is too big ( age 5-6 on a 3 yr old, its mid thigh length). Hoddie at least stays done up.

UniS · 08/01/2010 22:40

is monoprix like primark?

mistlethrush · 08/01/2010 22:40

Madbad - I was agreeing with you too!!!! I did get Mistlechicks (2 of them) in Pumpkin Patch, but it was 1/2 price so certainly not more than £8 ...and its got appliqued dogs around the bottom so he likes it.

Got to get two birthday presents for tomorrow afternoon (boys) and one for a girl for next weekend....

PandaEis · 08/01/2010 22:53

uniS i was gonna say that

PandaCub got my little pony things and a shopping basket with plastic fruit and veg in from me and DH, an ironing board and iron set from the CM, various bits and bobs from IL's and my mum and dad. she was spoilt rotten i think she may have been more impressed with the cards though

i will happily partake of a nice hot mulled cider my hands and feet are frozen

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 08/01/2010 23:08

Tea can probably define Monoprix better than I can. In the small, rural French towns where we often spend our holidays, the local (ahem) department store is/was often a Monoprix - it's more Co-op than Primark, I think, with a dash of Grace Brothers thrown in.

UniS - Excellent idea. We can have our own pony fun day tomorrow.

Panda - Tell me honestly. What do you think of My Little Pony?

More cider, anyone?

PandaEis · 08/01/2010 23:18

madbad IMO my little pony are in no way 'skinny and bony' and they can all hide forever under DDs bed as i am sick of picking purple hairs out of DDs clothes otherwise i think they are tolerable

amberlight · 09/01/2010 10:24

Mr T the hairy horse who owns us in RL asks might like to join in with the pony snow day too. What an adventure trying to get over to see him yesterday - 25 miles of untreated roads 8-12 ins deep in snow in places, snow drifts, ice sections, guess-the-approximate-position-of-the-road contests...but we made it! Thank goodness for friends who've been looking after him over there for us. Now for the shopping...eek.

DontCallMeBaby · 09/01/2010 12:01

Morning (just) all. Made it to work in the car yesterday - the biggest challenge was getting the car off the side road where it was abandoned. Other than that - not really a problem. DH has just shovelled the snow off the drive and got the car back onto it.

Thoroughly bored with snow now. No idea how likely school is to open on Monday - will depend on whether any more falls, I guess.

teafortwo · 09/01/2010 19:44

at madbad's description of Monoprix!!!

Infact it is more the 'Sainsburys' of the French supermarket world... but 'tis true due to a tradition of supermarkets being a bit scruffy doesn't look like it on first appearances.

Monoprix is FAB for children's clothes - they are chic but generally not too dear. The woman and men's clothes, I find, generally tend to be less "oooh how lovely" but like sainsbos OK for basics esp in the sale.

They have mini specialist shops too eg Monop - that sells scarfs and earrings and bags and other bits and bobs - junky fun fashion stuff Milk likes to go in and touch someimes. There is also Monop beauty that sells make up and bubble bath and stuff. If the Monoprix is small and black and white instead of red and white it is a 'trendy one' that sells just their most expensive stuff with usually lots of packets (bit like M&S) and may have a little coffee bar with a breakfast bar and high stools intead of real chairs.

On the side did you ladies know C&A still exists in France!?! It is always a surprise for visiting British guests!

RacingSnake · 09/01/2010 19:53

I have pyjamas from Monoprix.

Tea, what is a class rep, anyway?
