Tea Room the Twelfth

Come in, come in, to Tea Room the Twelfth! We now inhabit a rambling log cabin, surrounded by mysterious pine forests and mist-covered mountains (but also, strangely) easily accessible by regulars, new-comers and passing bishops, ferried in by Mellors driving the troika. All the usual rules apply and all are welcome!

By the way - We have hardy and very old wooden oak floors you can do anything to them and they just stand it. I have no idea how to go about parenting or having a dog with carpets !

mistlethrush · 07/01/2010 20:54

mistlechick managed to read a substantial proportion of Green Eggs and Ham this evening - all of the critical words!!!!

mistlethrush · 07/01/2010 20:55

Hehehe - that's high on the shopping list ONCE dh gets a job - hard flooring for downstairs toilet and bathroom....

UniS · 07/01/2010 21:00

and, er, Hi Panda. Sorry I was rude and ignored you yesterday.
Can you tel I'm avoiding housework in RL...

RacingSnake · 07/01/2010 22:28

Evening, all. This evening is the first evening that I have set the heating so low that I feel cold, although wrapped in a duvet on the sofa. What are we burning on the tea-room fire, by the way? The local landscape seems quite devoid of trees.

Impressed by Milk's story - could it be included as a sub plot in The Tea Room, The Movie?

I like MadBad's idea of the list of inspirational only children.

Just accidentally read my own welcome to the latest tea room manifestation and spotted that we are surrounded by trees. Either I have been very unobservant recently when visiting the tea room, or it's been moving even further North.

Its that MiracleGro again, I told Mellors to use it sparingly!

Glass of wine anyone? I have opened a particularly fine 2003 Rioja, which ought to be drunk about now....

mistlethrush · 07/01/2010 22:39

Sounds good to me Mary. Oh - and I've found some nice Spanish Olives and a few other tapas to go with it....

teafortwo · 07/01/2010 22:42

WOW - good one Mistlechick!!!!

MT - soon I hope.

Can you get floorboard secondhand? The thing is ours being so old is fab because it is shabbychic so a tiny mark here or there is nothing... while the first mark on a beautiful new floor is hell!!!!

RS - I feel some VERY important changes would have to be made for Milk's story to work as part of the movie. First honey would be changed for bolly and exhibition would need to be changed to 'other threads that look interesting but turn into bun-fights'

We are VERY lucky in having two working fireplaces - fireplaces are two a penny but working ones seem rare in Paris. What we have a problem finding is anyone crazy brave enough to climb onto the roof of an apartment block to sweep it for us!!! So to make up for our barely used fires I have stacked the tearoom one up with logs from the forest outside and the flames are divine!

mistlethrush · 07/01/2010 22:51

Might take the carpet up and see what the floorboards in downstairs cloakroom look like, but think we'll go for something more water resistant in the bathroom!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 07/01/2010 23:51

Hello and goodnight everyone!

Someone asked a couple of days ago about Gymbunny. I haven't seen her for ages, so if you meet her on another thread do try to tempt her back here. And is Daisy still on her hols? Or do you think she's fording the Zambezi with DaisyBloke?

PS Mistle - Don't do laminate. It's the Work Of The Devil.

And UniS - I always feign deafness when any sentence starts Muuummeeeeeeeeeeee in a wheedling voice. But I am a Bad Mother.

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 08/01/2010 08:15

Salvage yards over here do things like floorboards. A roaring log fire sounds wonderful. Mellors burnt a lovely Yule log at Christmas. NOT the chocolate variety!

Wonder if we'll get some snow today? We had a little snow yesterday which is still there, and probably frozen, but not enough even for a snowball fight!

teafortwo · 08/01/2010 10:43

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

Do you remember the awful party I went to a while back???

Well... the Mum is a class rep and so am I and since the party she has been e-mailing and talking to me in such a 14yr old school bully way that I am exhausted... especially as I thought I would be quite good at being a class rep but can't do the job properly or quickly due to having her throw a tantrum over every sentence I say or write...

Another Mother said to me that she is a snob and she behaves like that because I am "workin' clarrrrss INIT?" and (in her eyes) need keeping in my place!!!

The latest is - she has manipulated the other class rep (there are three of us doing the job) who generally agrees with me to stop being class rep and claims that her own 'new bestfriend' has approached her about becoming one and will be filling the role. Remarkably this plan seems to be falling into place nicely for her. REALLY it is teenage style manipultion!!!

Any advice for dealing with (gulps) this really horrible problem?

I did think of pulling at my mini skirt and shouting "Bu' yaar not wuuuuueeerfff i'" then strutting off in my Kickers and eye-liner with my shirt hanging out but because actually I do have some dignity, manners and self control I have no desire to act like a teenager back but need to stop her constantly treating me like this asap for my sanity!

mistlethrush · 08/01/2010 11:02

Sounds awful - my sympathies. Will ahve to put on thinking cap and see if I can come up with something later... Can't imagine you in miniskirt, shirthanging out and shiny blue eyeliner though tea (and, presumably, studded belt slung round hips/waist, and chewing gum - potentially dark lipstick and plenty of hair gel???) you're much too chic!

CMOTdibbler · 08/01/2010 11:19

Remember to scrunch up your perm before strutting off

I favour the uber sympathy route when dealing with people like this - stroppy email ? 'Gosh, are you OK ? Really not like you to be like this being rude to me/stroppy. Everything OK with DH/DD ?'. Trying to get her friend in ? 'Well, you know how people can be if everyone isn't given a chance, so we really should put an email round asking for volunteers - just to make things easier for x. Wouldn't want to put her in a difficult position'.

It may not deal with the root problem, but it means that you give the clear impression that things aren't acceptable, and it doesn't cause immediate conflict

teafortwo · 08/01/2010 11:29

Ha ha ha MT - in my teen years I wasn't really like that at all.

I was more unbrushed hair and big old clothes that came down to the floor with v chic dms I usually had my electric guitar dragging behind me and an Amnesty International letter under my arm. I basically distanced myself entirely from alpha g-girls!

(Disclaimer - I was one of those life is soooo crap, 90s hippy and slightly goth inspired Labour lovin' kids between grunge and greebos that never had a proper name but always wore bright lipstick and pulled two pieces where a fringe should be out of the front of their pony tails under the delusion it looked pretty good)!

teafortwo · 08/01/2010 11:44

ooooh - cmot fab - thanks

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 08/01/2010 11:44

Yes CMOT, you're good at this, I'd be far less tactful!

RacingSnake · 08/01/2010 12:37

Tea, is HorridMum English or French? The 'working class' thing doesn't sound like what i have heard about the French (although remember I don't live there). Also, I find it much harder to spot 'class' differences in foreigners.

Weather here is getting boring. No-one can come to join M.Snake and Wriggle in the ceremony of the galette which he was sp looking forward to, and I feel so sorry for him. I want to hug him and make it alright (as if he was Wriggle). So, in spite of all the behaviour, there must be something there.

OP posts:
amberlight · 08/01/2010 12:39

No good ideas on dealing with unusual people, but sending supportive ((((hug)))) anyway

Yes please to hot choc and a bun!

CMOTdibbler · 08/01/2010 13:13

Actually I could pop over and give her a good stare and a few words to set her straight Tea ? I was planning on popping over to Paris soon anyway.

Am imagining horrid mum to be a little like BonsoirAnna on here - who does seem class aware

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 08/01/2010 14:30

Oh, are we going to talk about other MNers?

I think I got the measure of B~A~ when she was recommending buying a child's dressing gown for 55 Euros (although it was then reduced in a sale). But, then again, am I particularly mean? Does everyone else think that 55 Euros is perfectly reasonable for a child's dressing gown?

If Cmot comes to Paris to berate offer HorridMum some tips on inter-personal skills, can I hide behind a hedge and watch?

mistlethrush · 08/01/2010 14:42

No, we're not going to talk about anyother MN are we. We all know what comes of that! (But, MadBad, I do begrudge having to spend more on Ds's clothes and shoes than I would dream of spending on clothes and shoes for myself...)

But please can I book a ringside seat for when CMot comes over to give HorridMum Padington stare?

CMOTdibbler · 08/01/2010 14:45

Sorry, just couldn't resist it as I often read BAs pronouncements on Parisian life, and contrast with Tea.

I resent anything spent on childrens dressing gowns as DS refuses to wear one - he prefers to caper around clad only in his pyjama top or less
