Tea Room the Tenth: Tea and cake and rock and roll

1000 replies

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 07/09/2009 23:29

Welcome back to the tea room.

In the search for the perfect venue, we have now decamped to a rambling country estate. The once-decaying castle, now restored, is a boutique hotel, popular with rock and roll gentry and visiting bishops, and the tea room (which never closes) is located in a tastefully converted barn. The charming garden contains a duck pond and ends in a haha. We need the haha, of course, to stop the bison trampling the herbaceous borders. Mellors the gardener is, as ever, in charge of the grounds.

Please come and join us for a celebratory drink.

Somebody pour me a large one please ...

amberlight · 10/09/2009 17:34

Large one being poured

Jacksmama · 10/09/2009 17:42

Next question: what are twiglets?? I never had the nerve to ask in previous threads.

And I'd like a large one, too, of whatever... thanks!

Thumb, the problem with me and long full skirts is that I am a huge klutz and would trip over the material. Or would trap the hem in the rolling wheelies of my stool at work and probably pull the entire thing off me...

MaryBS · 10/09/2009 18:25

They're twigs dipped in marmite:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twiglets

CMOTdibbler · 10/09/2009 19:09

Ah yes, the rolling stool thing is an issue to be sure. I frequently trap my work dresses under the wheels of chairs when teaching. In the days when I wore a white coat, I trapped that too

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 10/09/2009 19:34

Mary - What drove you to need a large drink at 4pm? Anything you want to offload?

As for the twiglets

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 10/09/2009 19:45

of course you do know that marmite is yeast extract, so it's pretty much the same thing..

Mary = are you ok?

JM/CMOTD - me too with the labcoat/skirts in the wheely chairs. Never quite lost one entirely but had a few near misses

MaryBS · 10/09/2009 19:53

But marmite tastes of yeast extract, ERGO, twiglets taste like marmite!

Received confirmation in the post that I didn't even get an interview, and all the feedback I received was "there was a high standard of applicants". REALLY helpful in helping me for future applications (I'd emailed them, asking for feedback)

CMOTdibbler · 10/09/2009 20:14

What a pish feedback Mary. I hate that you put so much effort into an application, and then they don't even seem read them properly sometimes

May I top up your glass ?

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 10/09/2009 21:00

Ah, but I still maintain that yeast extract is a bigger category than marmite, so something can be yeast extract without being marmite and can therefore have a different taste (especially as twiglets have other flavourings too).

Oh poo, Mary, about the non-interview and the meaningless feedback. I think employers do it through fear of litigation but it's really unhelpful.

Would you like more bolly? Or a shoulder rub from Mellors?

OP posts:
MaryBS · 10/09/2009 21:07

yes to glass topup, more bolly and shoulder rub please!

Also yes to cheese straws, particularly if they're home made!

Have just waved bye to DH, who has a big meeting in Wolverhampton first thing tomorrow, so is staying over tonight. He only got in from work 1/2 hour ago too!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 10/09/2009 21:21

Here's the bolly and snacks.

I'm sorry that your dh has had to go away, Mary. Does he have to travel often for work? MadBadBaby is always trying to convince MadBadBloke to go away overnight, so that she can sleep in his half of the bed.

OP posts:
MaryBS · 10/09/2009 21:27

No, he doesn't go away that often, once every couple of months or so. And I get a break from his snoring

cheers!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 10/09/2009 21:32

Cheers!

OP posts:
MaryBS · 10/09/2009 21:36

Any chance we could get some of these? Would save filling up so often...

Argh no, someone's eaten all the rocky road choccie clusters (and it wasn't me)!!!

Jacksmama · 10/09/2009 23:42

There, Mary, sounds like you need them!
re interview and crap feedback.
More Bolly?

I just had a chuckle at the image of JM, CMOT and TW all standing there in their knickers because a horde of rampant rolling chairs came along and ripped our skirts off.

Maybe I need more Bolly, too.

thumbwitch · 11/09/2009 00:09

more bolly coming your way, JM - I too now have that image!

Mary - that is so rubbish, I hate when they can't be bothered to even work out which applicant you are to give you proper feedback. NEver mind, clearly you didn't really want to work for such a care-less company in the first place. and for you though. Have some seriously squishy cheesecake with your choice of fruit on top and some cream.

Lol at MadBadBaby - miniT will probably be like that in time to come - at the moment he occupies the other side of my bed anyway, with DH in the boatshed! Suits us all better that way, but when we move into our house in 2 weeks time, things Will Have To Change.

Catitainahatita · 11/09/2009 03:06

Twiglets are a poor excuse for a snack imho. Crisps, tortila chips and peanuts being more my thing...

I'm currently struggling with trying to renew my Norton subsrciption. The programme keeps telling me to renew seeing as I have 13 days left on te pñd subcription. I go to the page.. log in etc but there is absolutely no option to renew. I try to do it via the programme and it tells me I am in the automatic renewal programe and it will renew 15 days before it due to run out. Two days ago, and it obviuosly hasn't renewed. Strewth.

Jacksmama · 11/09/2009 03:25

Twiglets. Hmmm. Twigs = small tree branches. Covered in Marmite (or at least, tasting like Marmite).

Nope. I don't think so.

Oi, slow down there, Cat! Pregnant women aren't supposed to run for snacks, I'll bring you some!

MaryBS · 11/09/2009 08:35

Ugh, where's the hangover remedy, mixing bolly with margaritas was NOT a good idea!

CMOTdibbler · 11/09/2009 09:34

What you need Mary is a big bacon butty and chips. The salt and protein will sort you out a treat

UniS · 11/09/2009 10:12

bacon buttie coming up.and a big mug of tea.

My boy is at preschool, and I'm at home! this is nearly a first, I'm not working, nor volunteering, nor whizzing round teh supermarket.... I should be giving teh floors a sweep and having a bit of a tidy up.. But , no I'm on here.

Anyone care to join me for a wonder round teh garden. I'm going to see what has fallen in teh haha recently.

RacingSnake · 11/09/2009 10:35

Sympathy to Mary. Sometimes you just have to rise above things, or you just end up seething and fuming. Of course very easy to rise above someone else's problems! Been busy for a bit, so just dropping in. What a lovely morning!

CMOTdibbler · 11/09/2009 11:50

I think its a day for lunch on the par terre. I shall get Mellors to move the sun loungers around, and set out a light repast of salads, breads and eton mess. Plus mimosas.

Been to the chiropodist this morning. Insoles make my feet much better, and have had my feet decallused .

RacingSnake · 11/09/2009 12:25

Eton mess!! Miam!!!! Not so sure about mimosas - aren't they those funny bobbly yellow flowers?

No time for catching up now - lunch time wtih masses to do and only a moment to gobble an Eton mess - but do hope Tea's first day went well. How long does it take to recover from the fact that Milk is now a schoolgirl? ? ?

Wriggle had an awful seconnd a day nursery. As soon as she had got home and recovered she was happily running about being Bambi with two twigs on her head. But she still was grizzly and cried on and off until about 7pm. Am wondering if all fun, playing and imagination has to stop at home to make her fit into school life.

Am really seriously thinking about trying to get her officially backyeared so that she gets into the year group she should have been in. But I know it is going to be a huge battle. I am told a may have more luck if she is down for an under-subscribed school. I will start looking for the ones other mums rubbish all the time.
