The SIXTH Tea Room - Everyone Welcome

Jacksmama · 21/03/2009 00:18

The One Child Tea Room started as a sort of sanctuary for anyone who was a bit tired of the controversy surrounding having one child only, for whatever reason. The topic seems to attract that sort of thing. So we thought we needed a place where a cup of tea and a muffin and a place to sit down and relax was needed - and judging by the number of visitors and regulars, it really was much needed!

The tea room has since undergone a few, shall we say, metamorphoses... it started as a charming bricks and mortar sort of place, with a lovely English garden, a ha-ha in the distance, and wonderful mismatched crockery.

But since the tea room is truly magical, at night, the glitter ball comes out, and booze and sofas canapees are served. During the daytime, there is a stable with (at last count) two horses, Earl and Lady Grey, who appreciate being exercised. We also have (at last count) two guinea pigs, RacingPig and RacingMissPiggy... but since they seem to have been up to no good, that count may increase shortly.

In its most recent incarnation, the tea room became a yurt, and we had Mellors The Gardener show up in buckskin trousers and no shirt (which caused several of the regulars to either fan themselves with whatever magazines were available, or faint prettily, preferably into Mellors' arms), and there seems to have been an errant bison or two.
Oh, and we also had the Naked Mohawk Babies - they were originally cake decorations (for the life of me, I cannot find the link right now) - and they have since taken on lives of their own, adding much amusement to the tea room.

Decorations include cut-outs of George Clooney, Wesley Snipes, and any other hunks of burning love we can think of. Oh, and peace lilies, and (since nothing seems to be able to kill the damn thing) an aspidistra.

For those who are shy of company, or fleeing controversial threads, we have a Priest Hole to hide relax in.

Please remember that the tea room is magical - no amount of Bolly swilled will cause a hangover, allergies of any type mean nothing, so you can eat and drink whatever you like, and if you don't fancy the distressed-looking couch, a brand-new comfy arm chair will appear in seconds.

EVERYONE is welcome, whether you have one child, none, or ten. In fact, one of our regulars is currently pregnant!!

The only strict rule we enforce is no fisticuffs. Anyone who behaves disagreeably will be ejected by Mellors (fully clad).

Most important of all - the tea room is meant for fun and support. It's perfectly acceptable, and in fact, mandatory, to be a little unhinged yourself.

Welcome all!!

(I've had a somewhat trying day so I will leave the crating and moving of china, and the actual shaping of the tea room, to everyone else... I did hear rumours of a spa being added, however, so please, book me in for a pedicure, will you? Thanks!)

Oh goodness Amber - horrible news re dog. Thinking of you lots. x x x

RS - I hope your DH is feeling more positive soon and your sister continues with her new positive look at life...

Racingsnake · 23/03/2009 20:13

Amber, fingers crossed for dog. Allow me to do some light tidying for you this evening, before the place gets too rioteous.

mistlethrush · 23/03/2009 20:25

RS - I thought we'd agreed - that we've moved back to the original tearoom, but there is a spa extension... Didn't want to be too spa ish as it can be a bit noisy and bright in some pools which might put some people off (as might the wandering around in fluffy towling robes!) but there is an imersion tank for people wanting a quiet soak somewhere away from things, some massage tables set up so that Mellors can work his magic, but the original tearoom, complete with comfy sofa (and two racing pigs), wing chair and aga are at the heart. Oh, and the NMBs have moved into the roof...

Racingsnake · 23/03/2009 21:21

Good. How nice to be back. Although I also loved the yurt.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 23/03/2009 21:30

.... and there is a richly-decorated bedouin tent on the lawn, down by the haha. I saw a real haha yesterday, while we were having our (uncharacteristically) healthy post-prandial walk.

Cmot - That's a fabulous outfit.

Thank you, racingsnake, for the dusting. I wish I knew what to suggest about a fault-finding husband.

Actually, mine's not that bad but as time goes on, I realise how much children absorb of their parents' relationship and, even if they don't repeat it, it lingers on as a sort of pattern or assumption. MadBadBloke's father, for example, used to be a member of various local societies and go out regularly with them, but I don't think his mother ever left the house except to go to the shops. So consequently he thinks he's incredibly progressive in permitting me to have something approximating to a social life.

I don't have a sister. Growing up, I always wanted an older sister - I guess I thought she'd be a buddy and good source of toys (or clothes, when older) - but I now have one in the shape of my SIL and we're not on the same wavelength at all.

Aaargh. Just thinking about my SIL. I need some Bolly.

Would anyone else care for some champagne? Or is this a night for gin and a straw?

Racingsnake · 23/03/2009 21:36

A very civilised gin and tonic with ice and lemon in a tall frosted glass, please.

Have liberally splattered Wriggle and myself with olbas oil in the hope of a good night's sleep and now have watering eyes and slight headache. Hope she isn't feeling overdosed.

teafortwo · 23/03/2009 21:47

oh rs - that sounds lovely - I will make enough to go round the whole room......

teafortwo · 23/03/2009 21:48

(I was of course referring to the G and T NOT the olbas oil!

mistlethrush · 23/03/2009 21:49

Ds managed to find a bottle of olbas oil recently and decided that he wanted some on his sheet at nap time as he had a slightly stuffy nose - unfortunately he managed to be rather too generous - and ended up screaming, saying that he'd got it in his eyes. I don't think he did have - but the olbas is now on an extremely high shelf We did have to do rather a lot of washing of bedding after that episode!

A glass of gin would be very welcome. Hauled in to discuss why my billing wasn't at the right level last month - very easy to explain, but no one asked me before this morning And, apparently, its fine to spend the 'day' working at home, but its not OK to leave work early to do the school run and spend an hour or two working at home when you get there (having handed over child to someone else)... But they are normally quite good!

I am really going to have to do something seriously. I think I might have lost perhaps a couple of pounds over the last 6 weeks - but need it to be a lot faster than that....

Jacksmama · 23/03/2009 22:28

CMOT, that is indeed a very yummy outfit!

bolly here please!

Am suffering from extreme brain fade and despite having just read the last couple of pages have taken little of it in - excpet that Amber might really be getting a skateboard dog mobility cart for MrsA - good one!

RS - hope the olbas oil works for you both. Am somewhat peed off as I have been snuffly again for the last couple of days - I'm actually hoping that it's hayfever because I only had a sniffle a few weeks back!
Sorry for confusion re. your sis's accident - I couldn't work out how it could have been so recent and you not have mentioned it, and her achieved so much since it, lifestyle-wise, in the space of a week or so!

Jacksmama · 23/03/2009 23:35

OK, I've decided I need a G&T please. No straw, though, I get the hiccups when I drink through a straw.
Hopefully the intake of a lot of booze a small civilized libation will make this infernal paperwork a bit more bearable.

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 23/03/2009 23:41

RS - it might make you feel better if I tell you that I am ashamed beyond belief of myself today - I have eaten half a Lindt bunny and 2 bars of G&B milk and almond chocolate and my muffin-top is expanding almost visibly! I can't seem to stop once I've opened a bar - and I can't seem to think about anything else until I have opened a bar. I've always been a big fan of chocolate but this is ridICulous.

Must do something about it pronto before irreparable damage is done...

JM - hope the tax forms are going ok...

Jacksmama · 23/03/2009 23:44

Taxes are done, thank Mother God

I've even done my online exam for continuing education credits (a 6-credit-hour exam in Radiology of the Lumbar Spine) - with Jackbaby sleeping on my lap, no less!!

But now I have to do a medical-legal report for a patient who is suing his auto insurance co for not covering treatment after a serious collision. ML reports are a pain in the arse.

Hence needing the G&T.

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 23/03/2009 23:53

oh yes, double the jargon! Nightmare.
Here, don't have too much of that gin now - you'll be seeing double in no time!

Have yourself a nice relaxing virtual massage with mellors - the good thing about it is that you'll be able to prescribe exactly how he should be doing it...

daisy99divine · 23/03/2009 23:58

yes to G&T please! Wow, what a long long day....

CMOT love the bodice, you look wonderful, glad at least one DH was up for giving you a lie in!

My best "college pull" was a chap who helped me poke bits of sick down the sink before continuing to snog me my, those were the days!!!

RS I think you sound like a saint. I would not be so patient or let things wash over me

Quite agree that for all of us parenting patterns are often what we see (how many times do I find myself sounding like a parent) the trick is to try at least on occasion to be aware when you are turning into your mum

JM - I would like just the T shirt please actually my sister is lovely. Totally fab. Most of the time

daisy99divine · 24/03/2009 00:00

that post was getting too long...

ouch to the olba

good luck to Amber and Mrs A

Hurrah to the tax form - and glad to see you doulaing again JM!

just don't look at your midriff, Thumb, its the best way

kickassangel · 24/03/2009 00:54

hey, jacksmamma, the accountant seems to have finished our taxes for us. hurrah!i can't even imagine how we'd have done them ourselves. there were various different ways of filing which meant either we owed them $700, or they owed us $1,000. guess which option we've taken!!

we've been having jolly discussions about life assurance (death, basically) & wills. deep joy! the insurance guy we've been talking to is the most boring person i've ever met, with no sense of humour, but he mentioned that it might be 'fun' to take dh toa game. ha ha. i'm so glad i wouldn't be going

Jacksmama · 24/03/2009 00:58

Oh yes, the discussions about appointing guardians, and life ins, and wills... gruesome. But necessary.

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 24/03/2009 01:00

we still haven't done it and we really should - bit tricky as well when we're going to be across the world from everyone I know - who to pick? Someone in Australia? Or someone in England?

kickassangel · 24/03/2009 02:11

dh says we aren't goin to die this year, so we can put it off for a while. it has just occurred to me that EVERY time i try to suggest making a will he completely blocks the notion .

i don't even know if a UK will would be recognised here, i know it won't be for finances, but what about care of dd? think i may just get one of those whsmith 'do it yourself' forms to say - every thing i have goes to dh, if he's alive, dd if not, my dsis gets to sort out any prbs. how hard can that be?

in fact, if i die anytime soon, please point anyone making legal enquiries in this direction, this is prob the closest thing to a will that i have!!

Donk · 24/03/2009 06:59

And does anyone know what happens with Wills written in England, anda the person living in Australia, with Executors in England? (I say England specifically in case Scottish law is different)

mistlethrush · 24/03/2009 09:20

Everyone's will scenarios seem really complicated. Must get round to doing our relatively straight forward one....!

Quite how my parents (who would be ds's guardians) would be able to cope I don't know!
