The SIXTH Tea Room - Everyone Welcome

Jacksmama · 21/03/2009 00:18

The One Child Tea Room started as a sort of sanctuary for anyone who was a bit tired of the controversy surrounding having one child only, for whatever reason. The topic seems to attract that sort of thing. So we thought we needed a place where a cup of tea and a muffin and a place to sit down and relax was needed - and judging by the number of visitors and regulars, it really was much needed!

The tea room has since undergone a few, shall we say, metamorphoses... it started as a charming bricks and mortar sort of place, with a lovely English garden, a ha-ha in the distance, and wonderful mismatched crockery.

But since the tea room is truly magical, at night, the glitter ball comes out, and booze and sofas canapees are served. During the daytime, there is a stable with (at last count) two horses, Earl and Lady Grey, who appreciate being exercised. We also have (at last count) two guinea pigs, RacingPig and RacingMissPiggy... but since they seem to have been up to no good, that count may increase shortly.

In its most recent incarnation, the tea room became a yurt, and we had Mellors The Gardener show up in buckskin trousers and no shirt (which caused several of the regulars to either fan themselves with whatever magazines were available, or faint prettily, preferably into Mellors' arms), and there seems to have been an errant bison or two.
Oh, and we also had the Naked Mohawk Babies - they were originally cake decorations (for the life of me, I cannot find the link right now) - and they have since taken on lives of their own, adding much amusement to the tea room.

Decorations include cut-outs of George Clooney, Wesley Snipes, and any other hunks of burning love we can think of. Oh, and peace lilies, and (since nothing seems to be able to kill the damn thing) an aspidistra.

For those who are shy of company, or fleeing controversial threads, we have a Priest Hole to hide relax in.

Please remember that the tea room is magical - no amount of Bolly swilled will cause a hangover, allergies of any type mean nothing, so you can eat and drink whatever you like, and if you don't fancy the distressed-looking couch, a brand-new comfy arm chair will appear in seconds.

EVERYONE is welcome, whether you have one child, none, or ten. In fact, one of our regulars is currently pregnant!!

The only strict rule we enforce is no fisticuffs. Anyone who behaves disagreeably will be ejected by Mellors (fully clad).

Most important of all - the tea room is meant for fun and support. It's perfectly acceptable, and in fact, mandatory, to be a little unhinged yourself.

Welcome all!!

(I've had a somewhat trying day so I will leave the crating and moving of china, and the actual shaping of the tea room, to everyone else... I did hear rumours of a spa being added, however, so please, book me in for a pedicure, will you? Thanks!)

daisy99divine · 20/04/2009 00:09

yuck yuck to coil, I stuck to the cheap and cheery diaphragm me...

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 20/04/2009 00:26

I don't think this is the time to be discussing Mellors' glitter balls. See earlier posts about (ahem) surgical interventions on the male person.

amber32002 · 20/04/2009 07:21

I really hope you don't mind me taking up further residence in the priest hole for a while. Yesterday, Mrs C, my lovely dog, collapsed when we tried to walk her. Emergency Vet found inoperable, invisible cancer of the spleen - they have amazing technology at the new clinic with scans and instant blood counting things. She's no longer with us, bless her. Words fail...this has been such a year.

Apologies for me being very quiet for a bit.

CMOTdibbler · 20/04/2009 08:38

Amber, I am really just so sorry about Mrs C. It seems like this year is just a series of tragic events for you, DH and your DS.

Have 'The Art of Electronics' and a stack of 'Classic Car'. Plus a chocolate selection pack

mistlethrush · 20/04/2009 08:50

Oh Amber I'm so sorry. You must be devastated - I know that she was more than just a dog to you - ie more than Mistledog is to me - much as I love Mistledog, she just has the role of a dog, not an assistance as well (apart from tidying up after MJ's mealtimes of course).

UniS · 20/04/2009 09:11

to amber- sympathetic waves.
I'll round up the NMBs when they wake up and take them for run in the garden so they don't disturb you in the priest hole.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 20/04/2009 11:00

Oh Amber. How dreadful for you, your family and dear old Mrs C.

daisy99divine · 20/04/2009 14:45

Ohhhh AMBER this is so not fair. Poor dear Mrs C and she was such a terribly important and special dog....

amber32002 · 20/04/2009 15:01

Thank you everyone. The manuals do help, a lot. So do the flower, biscuits and hiding in the priest hole for a while.

Was late for work because she wasn't there to remind me to do things at a certain time. This isn't good.

Catitainahatita · 20/04/2009 17:08

to hear about your dog Amber. You are having a rough time just now. I hope things improve soon.

Back and work today, . A backlog of emails and messages, oh joy. I love my holidays.

I've got an appointment to see my gynocologist tomorrow and a possible scan, to check all is well. I shall let you know in due course, in the meantime I shall busy myself with the emails to keep my mind off it.

Catitainahatita · 20/04/2009 17:29

Jacksmama
Your biscuits arrived!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Life is suddenly 100% more gingery than before and much better for it.

mistlethrush · 20/04/2009 19:50

Amber did you train MrsC yourself?

Just an idea - my parents are considering contacting a centre (I think its Bucks or somewhere like that) that trains assistance dogs - I think quite a few for deaf people - my parents have found out that they occasionally get a 'failure' who might have only failed on one part of their training (they met one that had only failed as she chased cats!) - I know that you wont be wanting to think of this sort of thing at the moment, but they may be able to help you out in terms of reminders/alarm clocks... I can find out more details of where they are etc if this has any potential to be of any use.

amber32002 · 20/04/2009 20:01

Mistlethrush, yes, I did. Well, it was a joint effort between her and me, really. She had some of the ideas herself.

Hearing Dogs for the Deaf would probably have the same attitude as many of the assistance charities at the moment - namely "there's no UK research on dogs and adults with autism, so we don't want to risk it in case the person runs amok etc etc". Hmm. Not many middle aged mums run amok. Not sure we'd have the energy. I might be in danger of arranging the dog's food in a very neat way, though

I'm meeting with the charities soon to discuss all of this with them, but it's too early for many of them to want to release their slightly-trained dogs to do anything else. So it's me getting a dog and retraining it whilst they watch and take note, really.

Complicated, eh?

mistlethrush · 20/04/2009 20:25

But they get their dogs rehomed to whoever signs up on the list - the fact that you would find the previous training potentially useful in some ways would be neither here or there to them surely?

Its crap isn't it. Just because you're an adult all the issues that people give children masses of leniency and assistance about all just 'disappear' apparently

Please let us know if there is anything any of us can do to help...

Jacksmama · 20/04/2009 20:58

Amber, I am so sorry about Mrs. C. That's so awful. Very very for you.

Catita - yay!!! I'm so pleased your ginger nuts arrived!! Finally!! They must have a different definition of air mail between Canada and Mexico - my definition involves about four days of travel, not four weeks!! I mailed them around the 17th of March!!

Amber, I'm sorry to hear about Mrs. C - she sounds to have been a very special dog/friend to you.

Help yourself to carrots if you wish...

thumbwitch · 20/04/2009 21:44

amber, so to hear about Mrs C, so soon after everything else as well - I hope you manage to find ways to cope with her not being there.

have some complex engine plans to read as light relief from manuals.

JM - did you happen to see my post asking about how you feel about treating people with arthritis? would still be interested in your response, if you have a mo.

daisy99divine · 20/04/2009 23:26

Oh Amber, do see if Mistle's mum and dad can help, it might seem altogether too soon but it may help - not replce Mrs C but supplement and continue her good work?

Catita, glad all is gingery, let us know about the scans!

JM glad you are perking up a bit too - are you back to your Bits Doctor soon?

Donk, nice to see you - how is your Dad?

Thumb, how you? Are you in a 2WW now?

i feel more wintery today despite first bit of sun in ages, here is some merlot

thumbwitch · 20/04/2009 23:30

daisy - am feeling more underbrained than usual owing to late night working - please, what is a 2WW?

Hope your wintry mood passes - I am having the best spring time, love the blossoms and next weekend we are thinking of heading off to Westonbirt Arboretum to see the last of the Japanese cherry blossoms, the bluebell fields and the Acers just coming into leaf. Best time to go, ime and imo. We shall combine it with a visit to Burford (Cotswolds) wildlife park - maybe this time the red pandas will be out!

Jacksmama · 21/04/2009 02:40

Hi all - must do some catching up.
It was a gorgeous day today, I did an enormous shop at a nearby huge supermarket with a girlfriend this morning, and then we went for coffee, and this afternoon Jackbaby and I had a very long walk - to our local grocery for everything that I'd forgotten this morning and then we took the long way back. It was hot and sunny and I believe I may wake up a little pink tomorrow .

Thumb, I saw the thread you directed me to a few days ago and thought about posting on it but then decided not to... I think I was scared off by a few threads last winter when I offered my professional advice and was rather severely shot down for it. But I'll go back and think about posting. FWIW, I treat lots of people with arthritis, both of the inflammatory and osteoarthritic kind. Not during an acute flare-up, of course. But it's been my experience that keeping the spinal joints moving and working the attached soft tissues sinificantly decreases the pain of arthritis. So, yes, I would treat someone like that. I might alter my adjusting technique depending on the diagnosis (someone who has RA and is osteopenic wouldn't be a great candidate for manual adjusting, for example) but manipulation and STT seems to really help patients with OA and nerve compression. So there you have Jacksmama's professional pearls of wisdom, LOL!

Did any of you read the Penguin thread last week or the week before? It was nominated for Mumsnet Classics - it started as an AIBU - "to arrange a false date with this idiot of a man"... it was hilarious, I laughed my butt off. Anyway, everyone kept making reference to "P-p-p-p-p-pick Up A Penguin" and I, of course, being a Colonial Dominatrix foreigner didn't get it at all... well, today, in our local grocery, what did I find... McVities Penguins in the biscuit aisle!!!! You ought to have seen me - Jackbaby in the buggy, grocery basket on my arm, holding a package of Penguins, laughing like a loon!! I was a fright sight!!

I'm currenty enjoying a glass of Yellow Tail Bubbles - it's lovely. Yellow Tail is a popular brand of wine here, I believe it's from Oz, and they recently came out with a sparkling wine. Jason bought me some for my birthday (and he got the Good Husband Award for it), and as we were out of regular wine since I am celebrating Monday, I decided to open it. It's yummy. Would anyone like some?

Otherwise, all is well in Chateau Jack. JB has grown in the last week - he first had a chunk-wise growth spurt (his neck disappeared and his wrists developed fat bracelets again) and then he suddenly shot up and is now taller than his little girl friend Brienne (my friend Lily's daughter). She still outweighs him though . I am very proud of Jackspapa for having started a rigorous work-out program on April 1 - he committed to doing an hour of moderate activity every day and has done it 17 days out of 20. I was getting a bit concerned because he'd put on a bit of podge this past year. (It was a health concern, not a physical attraction concern - his father died of some kind of heart disease, and we need him around!!! Who else would teach JB football???) I started yoga again 2 weeks ao and it's making me feel fabulous. AND I'm flying to Toronto to visit my mum next Tuesday night, for a week. Im scheduled to see the bits doctor again around May 23 - she said not to do "the deed" until then but I've been feeling so good we may see if we can leave JB with a babysitter and explore the new territory, so to speak. ("Losing My Virginity, Take 3").

That's me caught up - how about you all?

amber32002 · 21/04/2009 09:25

Drat, too early for the Bubbly! Goodness me, Jacksmama, sounds like you have an exciting time planned in the next few weeks, in all sorts of ways

Thanks muchly to everyone for your unceasing kindness about Mrs C. Much appreciated. As I'll be talking to the assistance dogs chief shortly, I'll see what he says.

Meantime, we had a very (exciting?) time yesterday when Mr B the new terrier discovered a way out of the garden (don't ask - he won't be slipping out through that impossibly small space any more ) and legged it down the path outside at top speed on his very small legs. One of my friends was round, and the neighbours were treated to the sight of me giving chase in my pink slippers, friend trying to run behind in her gold high heels, screaming hysterically (this never helps!), and both of us then overtaken by 6ft+ of ds doing a rugby-game-sprint. He caught up with Mr B, scooped him up and carried him rugby-ball style back to the house, to wild applause from the neighbours and what appeared to be a cheeky grin from Mr B .

Well, we do like to entertain...

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 21/04/2009 09:33

Morning all! I am from ear to ear at the Fine Lad treating Mr B as a rugby ball!
(And at Jacksmama planning a saucy evening with her dh, who I now surmise is called Jason. Or is that a top secret spy code name?)

As the sun isn't yet over the yard arm on this side of the pond, shall we have some tea, toast and crumpets?

Amber - Would you like yours lowered into the priest hole or will you be venturing onto the terrace? It's beautifully sunny out there at the mo and I always find a little sunshine lifts my spirits (at the same time that it reddens my nose )

mistlethrush · 21/04/2009 09:53

Anyone for some sun and breakfast/11sies?

Amber - hurrah for ds and his rugby skills!!!

One of my parents' collie crosses (when we got her we thought she was a corgie cross but when she realised we weren't going to beat her she stopped crouching and we found that she actually had normal lenthed legs) used to to a good line in running away - but she was very fast. When we first got her (and it was really important to stop her for whatever reason) she was still really skinny - often you could get a hand to her but slipped along her body until her tail was under your hand - and this was the only thing not too slipper to catch - at the time it was if she had a fox's tail - lovely and wide and bushy - her body did grow into it a bit more though! Not a recommended method of dog catching, but needs must

amber32002 · 21/04/2009 10:49

Yes please to tea, toast, crumpets, and a bit of sunbathing on the terrace. As long as I can borrow a corner of the bench to spread out these complex engine plans...?

Oh good - it's non-sticky non-smelly invisible suntan lotion! I do love the tea room's ability to transform things...! Now we need someone to rub it in. Where IS that Mellors?

mistlethrush · 21/04/2009 10:58

I think he's in the shed - shall I go and knock on the door for you? Mind you, I had thought that MadBad was getting a couple of deckchairs out of the shed earlier and she doesn't seem to have roused him... I haven't seen MadBad recently either... have you?
