The SIXTH Tea Room - Everyone Welcome

Jacksmama · 21/03/2009 00:18

The One Child Tea Room started as a sort of sanctuary for anyone who was a bit tired of the controversy surrounding having one child only, for whatever reason. The topic seems to attract that sort of thing. So we thought we needed a place where a cup of tea and a muffin and a place to sit down and relax was needed - and judging by the number of visitors and regulars, it really was much needed!

The tea room has since undergone a few, shall we say, metamorphoses... it started as a charming bricks and mortar sort of place, with a lovely English garden, a ha-ha in the distance, and wonderful mismatched crockery.

But since the tea room is truly magical, at night, the glitter ball comes out, and booze and sofas canapees are served. During the daytime, there is a stable with (at last count) two horses, Earl and Lady Grey, who appreciate being exercised. We also have (at last count) two guinea pigs, RacingPig and RacingMissPiggy... but since they seem to have been up to no good, that count may increase shortly.

In its most recent incarnation, the tea room became a yurt, and we had Mellors The Gardener show up in buckskin trousers and no shirt (which caused several of the regulars to either fan themselves with whatever magazines were available, or faint prettily, preferably into Mellors' arms), and there seems to have been an errant bison or two.
Oh, and we also had the Naked Mohawk Babies - they were originally cake decorations (for the life of me, I cannot find the link right now) - and they have since taken on lives of their own, adding much amusement to the tea room.

Decorations include cut-outs of George Clooney, Wesley Snipes, and any other hunks of burning love we can think of. Oh, and peace lilies, and (since nothing seems to be able to kill the damn thing) an aspidistra.

For those who are shy of company, or fleeing controversial threads, we have a Priest Hole to hide relax in.

Please remember that the tea room is magical - no amount of Bolly swilled will cause a hangover, allergies of any type mean nothing, so you can eat and drink whatever you like, and if you don't fancy the distressed-looking couch, a brand-new comfy arm chair will appear in seconds.

EVERYONE is welcome, whether you have one child, none, or ten. In fact, one of our regulars is currently pregnant!!

The only strict rule we enforce is no fisticuffs. Anyone who behaves disagreeably will be ejected by Mellors (fully clad).

Most important of all - the tea room is meant for fun and support. It's perfectly acceptable, and in fact, mandatory, to be a little unhinged yourself.

Welcome all!!

(I've had a somewhat trying day so I will leave the crating and moving of china, and the actual shaping of the tea room, to everyone else... I did hear rumours of a spa being added, however, so please, book me in for a pedicure, will you? Thanks!)

(we need a [tipsy] emoticon for here!!!)

UniS · 16/04/2009 23:05

Were there clowns and lions and ladies being fired out of cannon??? Which circus... Theres loads on tour at the moment.

I've spent half teh evening stuffing carrier bags with info packs on the area teh Uncyle convention is being held in. I think I did 80ish. If I double up for teh obvious family groups that will be enough. Tomorrow I have to sort out labels for the bags and sort T-shirts in teh right sizes into teh right bags! eeek. Picked up teh Ts today. Boy is refusing to try his on. And the pink ones for volunteers are VERY bright.

UniS · 16/04/2009 23:07

Oh, and no comeback after Dhs e-mail to young man...
It was rather classy wasn't it.
Amber- No hes not aspie, hes just a geek and a pedant.

thumbwitch · 16/04/2009 23:20

evening ladies - bolly night again, I see, jolly good!

I had a humorous event today - last night I was reading GH's The Talisman Ring, and that phrase "ventre a terre" came up. I remember some time ago googling it and finding no decent definition but quite a lot of discussion about what on earth it meant, so resolved to find an old FRench/English dictionary to look. Imagine my response to finding such a book in the charity shop I was in this morning - pub'd 1881 - and sure enough, there it was - ventre a terre = at full speed. Of course, when I re-googled it this pm, it was easily available on t'net - so didn't really need to buy the dic, but I like dictionaries, I have several.
BUt how about that - I thought about looking for such a book, and lo! within 12 hours I had found one! Spooky...

i say MadBad - those spangly knickers are rather fetching - look, they've fetched Mellors in for a good ogle!

MellorstheGardener · 17/04/2009 00:22

Phwooaarr!

teafortwo · 17/04/2009 00:52

[wide eyed and naive emotion]

We spent yesterday at a farm. Milk was given a towel to lay on her lap and then a tiny lamb was laid on the towel. She silently put her two hands around his little body brought her nose down to his head and nuzzled him charmingly, respctfully and oh so carefully on his tiny soft newborn head.

It was one of those overwhelming moments where I was so filled with pride that my blood turned to champagne and I felt like all of my insides were too big for my skin.

amber32002 · 17/04/2009 07:13

I've missed another night of wild entertainment! Well I never!! And all this sawdust from the circus ring everywhere too!

Mr B seems a little better, thank goodness.

Off to the races for dh and I today - as guests of one of our clients. That'll be an experience, assuming dh can pace himself enough to last the course (and no, he's not entering the 3.45!). I suspect there'll be another entry on the 'Day in the Life Of' ...thread later

Omelettes, anyone?

mistlethrush · 17/04/2009 08:48

Have fun Amber - Newbury? All the others within reasonable distance of not Scotland appear to be this afternoon/evening - so I don't think your phrasiology would be the same - you'd have said this afternoon or this evening....

I do hope MrA can stay the distance. Last year we went to the races from work. Unfortunately it was the day after an allergy test for me - I thought that I'd be fine as I got treatment rapidly etc. However, by about 3.30 I was feeling really crap - I ended up being sent home in a taxi (£60 ) - my boss picked up the tab - (but I was able to give him a taxi receipt so at least he could claim it back ). However I'm determined that I'm not going to have any paracetamol before we go this year

I'm not sure that we've had much of a description of MrB - what's he like - and is he being good with MrsC more importantly.

Madbad - those spangly knickers were something to behold - I have seen a few NMBs around this morning and they seem to have taken up the theme - some of them were wearing very fetching small white leotards with tiny gold webbing and buttons, and a few are sporting big white capes. I have even seen a few in sparkly pink lurex pants, but the less said about that the better....

amber32002 · 17/04/2009 09:10

Aye, tis the joys of Newbury for us. Nice place, too. Restaurant and halls are a bit echoey but I know where the quiet bits are, and being anywhere near horses is a joy.

Blimey re your race day experience - not quite what you'd hoped for?!?

MrB is a small brown jack russell type of terrier, but quieter and with a deeper bark. He likes fish. We think he may have been from a coastal part of Connemara, maybe a fisherman's dog? He's certainly very happy in big land rovers and very level-headed about life, so seems to have lived a sensible existence somewhere. All a mystery, really.

mistlethrush · 17/04/2009 09:29

I went to a point-to-point meet at Newbury many moons ago with my riding school teacher and another one of the 'helpers' from the stables. We shared 50p bets - based on whether we liked the look of the horses. Absolutely all the horses we picked came in last. Apart from the ones that didn't finish

I imagine its changed a bit from then though!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 17/04/2009 09:58

Morning all. I'd love an omelette.

I just need to pop to the tea shop dressing room to change out of this spangly costume. I think sleeping in it was a mistake - some of the feathers have come orf and there are sequins all over the place.

Amber - have fun at the races. It's decades since I last went, although I did lose some money on the Grand National. I pick my horses according to their names (and the associations of those names). I very nearly picked La Mome. Drat.

mistlethrush · 17/04/2009 10:02

I would have won last year if I'd looked at a list of the runners!

mistlethrush · 17/04/2009 10:29
daisy99divine · 17/04/2009 10:45

Oh, omelette would be fab. And a bit of honey left from yesterday. I shall put on the coffee.

I am hopeless predicting race winners, I like little courses like Fontwell and Windsor but haven't been for ages

Thumb, love the dictionary. We had similar spook - we lost the arial from the car. Had looked EVERYWHERE a lot. This was 6 months ago. At the weekend, DH said, I am just popping out ot the car. Came back in with arial - said he had "seen" it under the seat. And lo. It was there

And we've definitely looked there before - he said it wasn't even hidden. It was sitting. Wanting to be found

UniS - hurrah to your DH

Amber I think train MrB by treats and Mistle so wisely says

Love the NMBs and their new outfits. Not sure about the teeny tiny whips though

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 17/04/2009 10:48

Did you say large knickers?

daisy99divine · 17/04/2009 12:31

only large whem compared to the NMBs

mistlethrush · 17/04/2009 12:56

They would need to be fairly ample even if you were teeny tiny, doing all those acrobatics would otherwise be and ()

Off on a tangent... what music does your dc like? I'll start - Mistlejunior considers most baroque music to be good 'going to sleep' music - although he will drop off to almost anything. He loves dancing to things like the Beach Boys and the Beetles. He loves the Eukalalie orchestra of GB. and we were headbanging on the way home from school the other day to The Rite of Spring - even he might find this a bit difficult to go to sleep to, particularly at the volume we had it on

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 17/04/2009 13:30

Oooh. Lovely topic of conversation.

MadBadBaby is very keen on sparkletastic pop - Kylie the Perfect Pop Princess being a particular favourite. But she is exposed to many of her parents' obsessions a wide range of musical influences. I am very keen on the Ukelele Orchestra of GB, ever since seeing them on Jools, and am planning to see them at the Proms. MBB likes their version of Miss Dynamite. She also gets to hear lot of radio 3 in the car, especially when the news on radio 4 is not fit for little ears (although she does seem to know all about the dismembered body found in bits around the home counties ) and we have to change the channel hastily.

daisy99divine · 17/04/2009 14:11

DaisyBoy's favourite is Santana.

He likes Brahms to go to sleep to - the one written for the insomniac (lack of classical music education emoticon)

He is also very partial to military bands - and I think ukelele sounds fab

mistlethrush · 17/04/2009 14:18

Daisy - great clips of the UOofGB on Utube...

Jacksmama · 17/04/2009 16:11

Good morning all - busy few days, just wanted to pop in and say hi!
Is Catita back yet? I keep checking the Canada Post website to see if your parcel has been delivered yet and all I get is "International Item Has Left Canada"... is that sort of like "Elvis has left the building"?...

How is everyone?

UniS · 17/04/2009 16:20

WHY did I ever put a nursery rhyme CD on in teh car. Boy asks for it every time now. ARRRGH, and its soooo tweee. Aside from that hes quite keen on audio books, so we listen to The enourmous crocodile, The Giraffe the pelly and me, and wINNE THE POOH. oops Caps lock strikes again.

mistlethrush · 17/04/2009 16:24

Hi JM - anything in particular keeping you busy?

UniS - we now have a Recaro seat for Ds which has its own speakers built in so that he can listen to his own things if we're not playing the radio too loudly! Will be getting him some headphones to make it easier for him (proper, reasonably decent, robust ones) he currently has his Muzzy CDs on there - must add some of his CDs though!
