The SIXTH Tea Room - Everyone Welcome

Jacksmama · 21/03/2009 00:18

The One Child Tea Room started as a sort of sanctuary for anyone who was a bit tired of the controversy surrounding having one child only, for whatever reason. The topic seems to attract that sort of thing. So we thought we needed a place where a cup of tea and a muffin and a place to sit down and relax was needed - and judging by the number of visitors and regulars, it really was much needed!

The tea room has since undergone a few, shall we say, metamorphoses... it started as a charming bricks and mortar sort of place, with a lovely English garden, a ha-ha in the distance, and wonderful mismatched crockery.

But since the tea room is truly magical, at night, the glitter ball comes out, and booze and sofas canapees are served. During the daytime, there is a stable with (at last count) two horses, Earl and Lady Grey, who appreciate being exercised. We also have (at last count) two guinea pigs, RacingPig and RacingMissPiggy... but since they seem to have been up to no good, that count may increase shortly.

In its most recent incarnation, the tea room became a yurt, and we had Mellors The Gardener show up in buckskin trousers and no shirt (which caused several of the regulars to either fan themselves with whatever magazines were available, or faint prettily, preferably into Mellors' arms), and there seems to have been an errant bison or two.
Oh, and we also had the Naked Mohawk Babies - they were originally cake decorations (for the life of me, I cannot find the link right now) - and they have since taken on lives of their own, adding much amusement to the tea room.

Decorations include cut-outs of George Clooney, Wesley Snipes, and any other hunks of burning love we can think of. Oh, and peace lilies, and (since nothing seems to be able to kill the damn thing) an aspidistra.

For those who are shy of company, or fleeing controversial threads, we have a Priest Hole to hide relax in.

Please remember that the tea room is magical - no amount of Bolly swilled will cause a hangover, allergies of any type mean nothing, so you can eat and drink whatever you like, and if you don't fancy the distressed-looking couch, a brand-new comfy arm chair will appear in seconds.

EVERYONE is welcome, whether you have one child, none, or ten. In fact, one of our regulars is currently pregnant!!

The only strict rule we enforce is no fisticuffs. Anyone who behaves disagreeably will be ejected by Mellors (fully clad).

Most important of all - the tea room is meant for fun and support. It's perfectly acceptable, and in fact, mandatory, to be a little unhinged yourself.

Welcome all!!

(I've had a somewhat trying day so I will leave the crating and moving of china, and the actual shaping of the tea room, to everyone else... I did hear rumours of a spa being added, however, so please, book me in for a pedicure, will you? Thanks!)

oh, I have hairy legs. It is just part of life

last time I even looked at them was my sister's wedding about 16 years ago

thumbbunny · 06/04/2009 01:04

cloe daisy - but the sparkling lemondrops were an addictive alcoholic drink - you wouldn't expect anythign less from the "tea" room, now would you?!

Glad you had lovely hols

Anyway I think I must scoot off now as DS is due to wake up soon
Night all!

Jackbunnysmama · 06/04/2009 04:53

Welcome YumYumMummy! Yes, the Tea Room is addictive. I occasionally find the rest of MN a bit scary, too - lots of highly opinionated people... mind you, I have my opinions and am generally not shy about sharing them, but I'm really reluctant to engage in fisticuffs/ bitchiness. As is everyone else here, so we're all really nice people and very welcoming.
So you have one DD? I have a 13 1/2 month old DS who is the light of my life. Usually. No, always. It's just that last night the light of my life woke up at 4 am and wouldn't go back to sleep. DH won Best Husband Award for taking him out to the living room and getting him back to sleep. However, he woke up again at 6:30 am. So I got Best Wife Award for getting up with him and letting DH have a lie-in until 9 am. the little sod darling only napped for two very short stretches today, and it is nearly 9 pm here and he's still up... I've tried rocking him, music, walking, nursing... he's mangled my nipples and now he's up and running again. Currently he's crawling all over DH... fine, he can try... Jackbaby's parents are exhausted and so is Jackbaby but how do you wind down an overwrought toddler???

FlorenceofArabia · 06/04/2009 08:55

"I've started a new thread, please leave the sanctuary of the tearoom long enough to contribute as it's the first new thread started here since last Tuesday and for some reason that bothers me"

teafortwo · 06/04/2009 09:28

Ch... ch... ch..... Check out that camel!!!!

I never knew they came in red and the speed at which it moves is quite overwhelming.

Is it the new, rarely seen often spoken of, sports camel Florence?

As regards your thread - I have already posted!!!! However, I hang my head in shame as the sock was on the chair below the curtain pole. I said it was on the curtain pole to make my life seem a bit more exciting than it really is!!!!

I have noticed that we are heading towards 100 threads - I think we need to make sure the 100th thread is a big lovely party!!!!

.

So... Florence, tell us, what's new with you and that amazingly scrummy Princess of yours then?

FlorenceofArabia · 06/04/2009 09:55

Mulan keeps telling everyone she's 4 and a half but she's NOT! She's 4.4 .

Good idea about the 100th thread being a party ... and they said it wouldn't last, that'll show them .

Could someone check on Cod (my camel) for me, please, whilst I tuck into these scones ...

teafortwo · 06/04/2009 10:34

Mellors i(the handyman/ gardener is holding some sort of camel clinic.

It is a mental health session as they both have the hump!!!!

They seem to be doing some form of yoga to help them relax! Oh - wow wow! Mellors really is very flexible (Madbad had told me after their famous dance rehearsals in the shed but I thought it was sort of like a fisherman's brag - but no 'tis true!)!

Well anyway - I must go now to the world of work (dons fascinator and Mary Janes).

It was great to see you here Florence - keep smiling and see you soon.

xxx

Racingbunny · 06/04/2009 14:19

Great to see Florence and YummyMummy.

Have just got back from a rather trying morning with Wriggle being hyper and provocative all morning around town (never happened before) and dh being very irritable. However, when we got home and I put Wriggle to bed and sent dh off to work, he said, 'It was a fun morning but I don't feel well'. This was almost an apology for being so grumpy . The future is looking hopeful.

CMOT - what do you think of the fake tan produced by the same company on the website you linked to? I think I would have to use a product that lasts 7 days at least. Considering that I rarely get time twice a day to clean my teeth, let alone any more sophisticated beauty regime, I need to economise on time. The trouble I have very ugly legs. Actually, I have one perfectly acceptable leg and one very ugly leg, due to no white surgical stockings being provided in hospital at Wriggle's birth. At the time I felt rather smug, since everyone else was sweltering in the most unflattering and uncomfortable white surgical stockings. Now, they have normal legs and I have a ghastly varicose vein all down one calf. I still think Wriggle was well worth it and I don't mind at all that I was forgotten when the ghastly stockings were handed out - I was in Maternity for so long that the nurses all forgot I was a patient - but I do hate my legs leg. The trouble is, the other one doesn't go solo.

I'm sure I have lots of other things to say, but can't quite remember them.

Catita - Buen viaje, hasta muy pronto.

MadBad - I too have been gardening!! At last!

Thumbbunny - I imagined you with dark hair. I refuse to look at anyone's photo, since that spoils my illusions.

Florence - will look for your thread asap.

Tea - Bonjour!

Daisy - I think if minor royals have hairy legs, it will become de rigeur for the rest of us .

JM - congrats on recovery

Mellors - If you wouldn't mind just putting a couple of barrow loads of compost on my new strawberry bed ...

Uni - did you know that next week's special at Lidl is unicycles? For £39.99

Amber

Mistle - sounds like a great party. I have vowed never to do party bags, but will that mean no-one will ever come to Wriggle's parties twice? I was at a party last year where a little girl of about 7 was going on and on and on about her present - it wasn't her party; she was a guest. Her mother was very , but there was no shutting her up and we all got rather fed up. Any room which contained her emptied very quickly.

CMOTdibbler · 06/04/2009 14:36

A quick pop in from the conference whilst the delegates are listening to the talks - fortunatly we have wifi here.

Racing - if it is just the vein that you want to cover up, then why not try dermablend ? You can buy it from here and it has to be removed with soap and water, so will withstand a quick shower. I am useless with fake tan - my only success was being fake tanned by a professional, and the embarrasment factor was high. Plus the faff factor.

I am not doing party bags. When I asked DH if he wanted to do them, he looked at me in a very bemused manner, and inquired what the point was.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 06/04/2009 15:48

Welcome Florence and YumYumMummy!

Party bags are the work of the devil. We didn't have them at first but do now, at MadBadBaby's insistence. But I make my own from fabric scraps - eat your heart out, Cath Kidston - and try to fill them with something vaguely useful rather than plastic tat and e numbers.

Did anyone hear Woman's Hour this morning? A discussion of the growth in one child families (roughly a quarter of the total). It was based on the article linked to on the other thread by the journalist who's deliberating on whether to have another child. Someone mentioned that some of the growth in one child families is due to fertility issues etc, rather than a completely free choice. Unless I missed it when I was moving between rooms, there wasn't very much stereotyping of only children as spoilt and needy, although I did detect a bit!

It's a bit late for soup and lewd rolls, so would anyone like a cup of tea and a slice of cake?

And do you think we should buy some Lidl unicycles for the tea room lawn? UniS could teach us the basics.

Jackbunnysmama · 06/04/2009 16:14

Good morning all! (Well, morning in my corner of the world.)
Would anyone like some homemade butter-crust bread with bee's honey? Or strawberry-rhubarb jam?
Donk, here are some maple-syrup glazed carrots for you.
What do you suppose the camel would like for breakfast/snacks/treats?

It is gorgeous here this morning - everything in my flower bed has grown enormously over the weekend. I wish the lavender would show some outward signs of life, though.

Must dash, I am going to another yoga class this morning. I wasn't in enough pain after Saturday's class so need to inflict some more on myself. [tongue in cheek emoticon]
Oh, and I suppose as long as Florence limits her requests for posts to one per thread, I could pop in to see what it's all about.

Racingbunny · 06/04/2009 16:32

Can't find Florence's thread. Link, please?

Bit damn chilly here today after the beautiful weather we have been having, but lovely morning bothering tadpoles in the park communing with nature. Train station opposite park, too, so sheer bliss for 2-year olds! I think we might wrap up warm and do the same again tomorrow or Wednesday. Holidays are bliss - not having to plan ahead.

Think I'll take Wriggle and her net and bucket and investigate the tea-room duck pond for tadpoles.

FlorenceofArabia · 06/04/2009 16:56

"Oh, and I suppose as long as Florence limits her requests for posts to one per thread, I could pop in to see what it's all about"

Just trying to keep the topic growing, Jacksmama, as I've noticed some posts in other topics about one child families and they don't seem to realise we have our own topic (and tearoom which you are free to plug on "my" thread)

mistlethrush · 06/04/2009 18:57

Hi Florence (that comment I believe was because we got thoroughly told off on another thread about the invitations, even though there was only one actual link...)

We managed birthday boy with no nap and not too much of a melt down!

may catch up later...

teafortwo · 06/04/2009 20:20

I am listening to woman's hour as I type! It is very interesting so far Madbad....

NOW they come back and saythey an;t cover our activities... but not saying if its just X&Y or if its all of them or some or what. Arrrrrgh. We have a big event in less than 3 weeks. thumbbunny · 06/04/2009 22:54

evening all! I have had a most productive day - I went to the Natural & Organic Products show at Olympia (trade only) - blagged a few freebies, including some v. nice baby food for DS (he had to come too but he charmed his way around the exhibition as usual and was ever so good for about 3 hours - the last 10 mins before we left were a bit rough but hey!). Got some most excellent chocolate truffles (The Booja Booja company) and my favourite fart-neutralising spray from Ainsworths, plus a fruit sugar solution that will be of some interest to those of you who have sugar Issues (bolded so you can see it in the post)

The sugar stuff is called Sweet Freedom and I have to say it is rather yum. The rich one tastes like liquid toffee apples! The lady on the stand says she uses it in baking all the time so I got some to try out in DS's cookies - anything that keeps the sugar content down is a bonus.

Am supposed to be starting the next baby-making intensive tonight but DH was being a royal PITA so reallly don't feel like it!

Organic chocolate liqueur, anyone?

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 06/04/2009 23:04

No thanks to the chocolate liqueur, Thumb, but I will add Cointreau and Limoncello to tonight's menu!

Do you go to many of these events? It sounds interesting, especially if there are freebies to be had!

thumbbunny · 06/04/2009 23:08

Not too many - this particular one is my favourite to go to because it is trade only - so it isn't too packed and the stall-holders are more likely to give you freebies. I can't stand the Vitality Show - massively overwhelming - but there used to be a show called the Natural Trade Show that was on twice a year, once in Brighton and once in Harrogate and I used to go to both events cos I have a friend in H'gate with whom I could stay. That show unfortunately started to go downhill and has now ceased but it was great when it first started. More for therapists and people interested in CAM, plus trade as well.

Jackbunnysmama · 07/04/2009 03:30

Any milk chocolate, MadBad? I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to dark chocolate.

Good luck with the baby-making intensive, thumb - and PMSL at your "favourite fart-neutralizing spray"!! I should get DH some...
