The SIXTH Tea Room - Everyone Welcome

Jacksmama · 21/03/2009 00:18

The One Child Tea Room started as a sort of sanctuary for anyone who was a bit tired of the controversy surrounding having one child only, for whatever reason. The topic seems to attract that sort of thing. So we thought we needed a place where a cup of tea and a muffin and a place to sit down and relax was needed - and judging by the number of visitors and regulars, it really was much needed!

The tea room has since undergone a few, shall we say, metamorphoses... it started as a charming bricks and mortar sort of place, with a lovely English garden, a ha-ha in the distance, and wonderful mismatched crockery.

But since the tea room is truly magical, at night, the glitter ball comes out, and booze and sofas canapees are served. During the daytime, there is a stable with (at last count) two horses, Earl and Lady Grey, who appreciate being exercised. We also have (at last count) two guinea pigs, RacingPig and RacingMissPiggy... but since they seem to have been up to no good, that count may increase shortly.

In its most recent incarnation, the tea room became a yurt, and we had Mellors The Gardener show up in buckskin trousers and no shirt (which caused several of the regulars to either fan themselves with whatever magazines were available, or faint prettily, preferably into Mellors' arms), and there seems to have been an errant bison or two.
Oh, and we also had the Naked Mohawk Babies - they were originally cake decorations (for the life of me, I cannot find the link right now) - and they have since taken on lives of their own, adding much amusement to the tea room.

Decorations include cut-outs of George Clooney, Wesley Snipes, and any other hunks of burning love we can think of. Oh, and peace lilies, and (since nothing seems to be able to kill the damn thing) an aspidistra.

For those who are shy of company, or fleeing controversial threads, we have a Priest Hole to hide relax in.

Please remember that the tea room is magical - no amount of Bolly swilled will cause a hangover, allergies of any type mean nothing, so you can eat and drink whatever you like, and if you don't fancy the distressed-looking couch, a brand-new comfy arm chair will appear in seconds.

EVERYONE is welcome, whether you have one child, none, or ten. In fact, one of our regulars is currently pregnant!!

The only strict rule we enforce is no fisticuffs. Anyone who behaves disagreeably will be ejected by Mellors (fully clad).

Most important of all - the tea room is meant for fun and support. It's perfectly acceptable, and in fact, mandatory, to be a little unhinged yourself.

Welcome all!!

(I've had a somewhat trying day so I will leave the crating and moving of china, and the actual shaping of the tea room, to everyone else... I did hear rumours of a spa being added, however, so please, book me in for a pedicure, will you? Thanks!)

Guten abend, Cmot.

Rose and rose spritzers all round? Cheers.

CMOTdibbler · 30/03/2009 23:03

Oh heavens, no where near as good as CoV. I love making cakes (although generally I refuse to make any I can't eat), and do a bit of sugarcraft, but am not artistic enough for the really good stuff. Have made a few wedding/engagement/anniversary/christening cakes though

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 30/03/2009 23:08

Well, that sounds very impressive to me!

CMOTdibbler · 30/03/2009 23:10

Prost !

My cakes are rather simple and rely on ribbon and flowers for the extra interest, rather than icing. But they taste good, and very inclusive, so thats what matters.

thumbbunny · 30/03/2009 23:17

Taste is the most important thing, for sure... gooiness, chocolatiness etc. are all quite important too...
[droooool]

Warum sind Sie in Deutschland?

CMOTdibbler · 30/03/2009 23:21

I'm in Solingen - meeting in Haan tomorrow. Not the most attractive area, but where the factory is

teafortwo · 30/03/2009 23:58

COVs cakes are so extremely very impressive!

I really want her to set up an online gift shop so I can get cupcakes sent to friends for birthdays, babies, weddings or just because too.... Wouldn't that be just so deeply lovely!!!

Thumbbunny near where I work is a German cake shop... I have never bought one as they look too too too addictive!!!

thumbbunny · 31/03/2009 00:01

ah, you see just occasionally having a wheat ishoo DOES help! I can't get sucked in....

Jackbunnysmama · 31/03/2009 00:19

I don't have a wheat issue so hand over (preferably non-chocolate) cupcake!!

(Please.) (And thank you.) (Wouldn't want to be told off by MadBad again.) (Because then I'd have to slam the door again.)

teafortwo · 31/03/2009 00:21

Oh no - I am so red - my last post reads like a page from Charlie and Lola!!!

teafortwo · 31/03/2009 00:22

Jacksmama - do you bake German cakes.... ??? I could just imagine you being pre-eeetty good at it if you did that is why I ask!

thumbbunny · 31/03/2009 00:31

pmsl at tea! You're so very absolutely right, although I hadn't honestly really noticed it at all until you mentioned it

My worst one is to start talking like someone out of a Georgette Heyer novel after I've read about 3 of them (currently about 6 in to the set again) - so if I start coming out with strange antiquated phrases, you'll all know why!

daisy99divine · 31/03/2009 01:14

AT last! I have a moment to swing on the swing seat (although I need to wrap myself in a cashmere throw as it's quite chilly now) and have a glass of rose

I too am worried about the > racing - should we not I wonder?

Amber I think Fine Lad sounds wonderful. Does he quote lines from his play while dispensing counselling? I suspect MabBad is brewing for some career advice

Mistle I had always thought NCT sales just did baby stuff - good shopping!!

parties I found the opposite to you, Racing, for DaisyBoy's first I just wanted to be alone with DaisyBoy and Mr Daisy a sort of very family day. we went to the aquarium

Last year we did a party. The actual birthday we went to Bockett's farm adn then had a party the next day. I made too many muffins (well they were too large) I did little party boxes of food per child and we did a nursery rhyme singing session in the middle - lots of maracads and bells and singing. The mums joined in and most of the dads stood about looking a bit we are lucky - nobody has gardens but there is a big garden square nearby. Just put up a balloon in the corner and it becomes a party zone. Everyone comes with outdoor toys and the party gives provides booze and food and a little something (like the singing). managed to cover a lot of weekends like this last year. lovely

roll on summer!

Jackbunnysmama · 31/03/2009 03:15

Tea, I do bake German cakes, well, only a couple as they're all I know, but, they do tend to turn out rather yummy, thank you! The ones I'm very good at are German Apple Cake on Shortbread-type Crust, Marble Cake, and Drunken Capucin (Besoffener Kapuziner), a cake made from ground hazelsluts and drowned in rum. Very yummy - sadly, the alcohol evaporates with baking.

Speaking of baking -- I made the Lemon Drizzle Cake from the Recipes topic this afternoon... ohhhhhhhhhhh... would anyone like a piece? It would probably go extremely well with a glass of Prosecco and a splash of Limoncello.

Which reminds me... I had such a time not laughing out loud at a patient on Saturday morning. She is one of those loud, dippy people. She's previously amazed amused me by referring to her sister-in-law's part-time profession as a "doodle". Would anyone care to guess what she meant?

Wait for it...

A DOULA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously.

Fortunately she was face-down at the time and so I could cough rather loudly to disguise my ...

Well, she capped that on Sat when she told me about a party she went to recently where they served lots of lovely drinks that she'd never heard of... Mojitos and Bellinis among them, and... Prosciutto!!!! As she was sat facing me at the time, all I could do was try to hang onto my face and say, with only a slightly trembling voice, "I think you must mean Prosecco". She didn't bat an eyelash, said, "that was it!" and continued chatting. I know it's mean but when she finally left I laughed so hard my sides ached.

daisy99divine · 31/03/2009 03:47

Night all! I might curl up here on the sofa for a bit

amber32002 · 31/03/2009 07:35

Another party by the NMBs I note.

mistlethrush · 31/03/2009 09:01

Amber - I'm sure that they must be around now - or at least ones where this sort of thing is taken into account.

Ds has decided that he is going to be a superhero when he grows up. Based on his verbal skills and non stop talking and argumentative streak, we're thinking barrister might fit the bill .

NCT sales - 0 - 8 yrs stuff, although it does tend to peter of towards the higher levels. And, of course, the girls clothes rails had to have added rails (so that there were two rows) whilst the boys ones only had single rails... If Ds had been a girl I could have bought him so many lovely clothes at a complete snip!!! [wails]

He has taken to asking every now and then when we're getting a baby... I'm not sure he'd be quite so keen if one actually arrived.

Tea - its quite an achievement sounding like CHarlie and Lola without trying - well done!

Ds's cake this year (he doesn't know yet, so don't let on) is going to be a pile of small monsters - so that they can be separated into individual monsters, one for each party bag. Went and got kilos of fondant icing yesterday at the market - and have some paste colours... That way I send the children home to have the colouring and they can have something quite healthy for tea!!!!!

teafortwo · 31/03/2009 09:44

Oh wow - the Monster cake sounds fab!

UniS · 31/03/2009 09:50

I like the they work for marking something as descriptive. more properly they work for marking something as descriptive of what is happening/ happened IN teh tea room world rather than RL, so maybe I shouldn;t have used them up there...

mistlethrush · 31/03/2009 12:35

UniS Do you think that Mellors might be encouraged to teach the NMBs to stop partying where they disturb Amber at night - and also stop leaving footprints on the cakes.... Its one thing bits of cakes disappearing to various crannies around the tearoom, its another when the remaining bits of cake have so clearly been walked on (its a bit like the elephant in the fridge thing)?

Would you like some soup and a roll? We've gone for tomato with sweetcorn as ds likes that....

teafortwo · 31/03/2009 12:43

MT - Beer and I had a chat about Milks birthday and it has been decided that she will be having a party! (Tea breathes deeply).

The thing is the people we know very well who would be up for hosting Milks party at their place and have a garden we can spill into if need be - actually run a couscous restaurant - making the whole gingerbread theme a bit out of place....

Has anyone got any ideas - What theme would work in a couscous restaurant?

amber32002 · 31/03/2009 13:08

There's an elephant in the fridge??!

Racingsnake · 31/03/2009 13:17

Of course, there is also the elephant in the attic ... 'Elephants have trucks. I have a trunk in the attic. Therefore I must be an elephant.'

Just dropped in for a quick bowl of soup and some reassurance. Have to work this afternoon, totally ruining my favourite day of the week, so maybe this is the cause, but I saw a very pregnant friend who had just been for a massage and the masseuse had 'connected with the baby' and was communicating with it and I suddenly felt so sad and left out that all my friends are moving on and leaving me behind as the only person I know with just one child. I started thinking that it is because I don't deserve a baby and I am feeling very fragile. So easy to blame yourself when life goes wrong ...

mistlethrush · 31/03/2009 13:39

((((RS)))) I know, its not fair is it. However, just love WS for the moment. If another s is meant to be at some stage in the future, it will be. Until then make the most of being single childfull - you can get around more easily, you don't have as many demands on your time and you only have one dc to lavish attention on.

BTW, ds and dh played with the 'proper' lego that I got at the sale - its a hit. Ds ran in and gave me a big hug for getting it for him (smile) and they made 8 different models from the book - I think ds might allow dh to take them to bits so that they can build some different ones later!
