The SIXTH Tea Room - Everyone Welcome

The One Child Tea Room started as a sort of sanctuary for anyone who was a bit tired of the controversy surrounding having one child only, for whatever reason. The topic seems to attract that sort of thing. So we thought we needed a place where a cup of tea and a muffin and a place to sit down and relax was needed - and judging by the number of visitors and regulars, it really was much needed!

The tea room has since undergone a few, shall we say, metamorphoses... it started as a charming bricks and mortar sort of place, with a lovely English garden, a ha-ha in the distance, and wonderful mismatched crockery.

But since the tea room is truly magical, at night, the glitter ball comes out, and booze and sofas canapees are served. During the daytime, there is a stable with (at last count) two horses, Earl and Lady Grey, who appreciate being exercised. We also have (at last count) two guinea pigs, RacingPig and RacingMissPiggy... but since they seem to have been up to no good, that count may increase shortly.

In its most recent incarnation, the tea room became a yurt, and we had Mellors The Gardener show up in buckskin trousers and no shirt (which caused several of the regulars to either fan themselves with whatever magazines were available, or faint prettily, preferably into Mellors' arms), and there seems to have been an errant bison or two.
Oh, and we also had the Naked Mohawk Babies - they were originally cake decorations (for the life of me, I cannot find the link right now) - and they have since taken on lives of their own, adding much amusement to the tea room.

Decorations include cut-outs of George Clooney, Wesley Snipes, and any other hunks of burning love we can think of. Oh, and peace lilies, and (since nothing seems to be able to kill the damn thing) an aspidistra.

For those who are shy of company, or fleeing controversial threads, we have a Priest Hole to hide relax in.

Please remember that the tea room is magical - no amount of Bolly swilled will cause a hangover, allergies of any type mean nothing, so you can eat and drink whatever you like, and if you don't fancy the distressed-looking couch, a brand-new comfy arm chair will appear in seconds.

EVERYONE is welcome, whether you have one child, none, or ten. In fact, one of our regulars is currently pregnant!!

The only strict rule we enforce is no fisticuffs. Anyone who behaves disagreeably will be ejected by Mellors (fully clad).

Most important of all - the tea room is meant for fun and support. It's perfectly acceptable, and in fact, mandatory, to be a little unhinged yourself.

Welcome all!!

(I've had a somewhat trying day so I will leave the crating and moving of china, and the actual shaping of the tea room, to everyone else... I did hear rumours of a spa being added, however, so please, book me in for a pedicure, will you? Thanks!)

The aspidistra is dead, long live the aspidistra.

A moments silence please.
Then can someone pick the Naked Mohawk baby out of that champagne glass please, hes getting a bit tiddly I fear. his big boy pants seem to have been cast asunder already and hes doing back stroke. Oh dear. How quickly the trappings of civilization are lost.

gosh it's all been happening here tonight - rampaging bison and aspidistricide; and champagne- swilling swimming NMBs!

MINE!

MT - Im sure you've already thought of/ explored this option - does your DS's school offer bursaries to those in financital straits? My Dad was made redundant when I was in Vth or Lower VIth form at school (can't remember which) and he had the option to apply for a bursary for my fees but had a complete strop at the amount of info they wanted so refused to go through with it, preferring to scrape the money together to keep me there for the rest of my schooling. (Thanks Mum & Dad!) Of course, it wasn't a general recession then so things were a bit different but if you haven't already thought of it, it might be an idea?

It is perhaps worth pausing for a moment to remember why the beloved aspidistra is known as the cast iron plant.

Would you like a little drinkie, Racing?

Jacksmama · 26/03/2009 22:09

Never mind Racing , I want a drink!!!

[grrr at butt-ugly cast iron plants emoticon]

MiL has offered to pay for a year's worth of fees if push comes to shove. Dh also says we'll move to a smaller house before he leaves (really, I think this is sensible - I am positive that he would be marked out as a trouble maker and badly behaved (and, potentially having ADS or something similar) whereas, really, he is a rather bright, small boy following in the 'Just William' tradition....)

But where ds is coming from is that we've had a conversation with ds which goes along the route 'Daddy has a new job' 'what's that ds?' 'Looking after me'. 'That's a really nice job ds, but unfortunately, daddy won't get paid for doing that. I know that you've got some money in your piggy bank, but it won't be enough to pay for your school or keep living in our nice house'.... Which is where today's outburst came from - although that conversation was quite some time ago, and today's episode came completely out of the blue.

BTW, I found the remains of the aspidistra outside. I don't think that its worth bringing in so have put it on the compost heap, but I have rounded up some of the nmb's that were staggering around out there with bits of tree house stuck in their hair... Ooo I see we have quite a few baby aspidistras - very nice! They look good in those small galvanised buckets too

nakedmowhawkbaby · 27/03/2009 09:54

Hi ho! Hi Ho!
It's off to work we go!

Well, Boys! That was quite the event wasn't it? DO WE LIKE BISON RIDING???!!

WE DO!!!!

Now, let's fish our bretheren out of the champagne glasses and LOOK - teeny tiny aspidestra plants - one each, just like our earlier carrot riding days!!!

HURRAH!!

bison · 27/03/2009 09:56

Those little Naked Babies - blimey - with the Native Indian backgrounds they wove their teeny tiny liana vines into reins, and rode me with their teeny tiny toes

I have spent the night jumping the ha ha, chasing the bishops, bothering the ducks and then, the dancing round the campfire! I thought it would never end

teafortwo · 27/03/2009 11:11

aaaaaaawwww - MT your poor little humbug.... I am sure he will like his new school and new house just as much.

Home is where the heart is - tell him! And with every new experience you hold on to the friends from your last one that mattered and have an opportunity to have loads more friends too.

MT, I am a true believer in love above money. As long as you have each other and enough to eat and some safe place to live you will be fine. This is particularly true for children!

I KNOW it because my Dad was out of work for much of the last financial hic up, when I was a child.

Actually this period was a truly very happy time in my life. I had lots of time with my Dad and I remember this optimistic feeling - things will only get better! I remember being very proud of him for getting elected on the village council (if he had been working he wouldn't have had time to do this) and we fell in love with simple bbqs with good friends, going on family walks and camping - which are things we still do today.

Have you started looking for a new home? My sis is looking for a new house and is very excited by the great deals to be had. She was hoping on buying a three bed pad but realizes with house prices dropping four bedroom places are in her price bracket now!

teafortwo · 27/03/2009 11:13

sorry - I had real problems with pressing send - since sending last message I understand that Mistleboy might be able to stay at his current school and would have sent something quite different....

grrrrrrr that send button!!!!!

teafortwo · 27/03/2009 11:20

I think I had one too many last night - I keep seeing a bison go by?????!!!!!!!!!!????????

P.S - I would like to establish although my hair is quite short it isn't short enough to have a number.....

I am seriously considering getting it high-lighted to 'soften' the style.... and buying a hat for the wedding.

I have been checking out Jackie O and Carla Bruni pics for inspiration on said hat.

I actually started crying last night about hair much to Beer's complete confusion!

It is only hair, it is only hair, it is only hair (this is my new mantra)

Tea - you'll look fab in that dress, but yes, I think a hat is a really good idea - preferably one that shouts Parisian chiq and rather outdoes the Mother of the Bride, Bridesmaids etc in a rather subtle way - hey, this looks fab! (there seem to be lots of lovely hats available at the moment....)
