Tea Room the Nineteenth

1000 replies

amberlight · 02/11/2010 10:44

All in need of a restful break and a chat are more than welcome to the nineteenth Tea Room.

We find ourselves in the South of France, where the warm sunshine is just the thing for those who are missing the summer. The tea room has its aga and its distressed chintz sofa...and its potted plants. The usual fictional tea room inhabitants are here, as ever: Mellors, the gardener/handyperson with the handy ways with massage; the collection of tea room animals including the horses, camel, bison, guineapigs and sundry others; the Bishops and other faith leaders who joined us a while back and potter in for the occasional cuppa. It may not make sense, but that's not important. What matters is the lovely people here and the chance to just relax.

re: flying with slapped cheek (not sure where it started on this thread), I suspect if they think your child looks ill, they won't allow them on the plane, whether or not you tell them its perfectly safe! I'd seek advice or hide it if at all possible.

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 17:11

That was me.

He looks fine -- in fact, everyday people have said "awww, bless, he's teething." I thought so, too. I mean, he is, he's full of dribble with pink cheeks. And during the day he's fine, though this time of night he's a bit restless (which coincides with entering US airspace/New England on Saturday). But part of it is lack of sufficient nap.

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 18:32

Right, BabyScout is down for the night (though not sleeping yet) and pizza is in the oven. Time to catch up before I start putting all of the piles into suitcases.

Welcome, WhyIsThatThen and hello DO!

Thanks to MT, Mary and thumb for the advice re: slapped cheek. BabyScout seems himself, just a bit more clingy and whiney. Mostly in the evening (dinner/bedtime). He's overly tired. He's also looking/acting like he's teething. I can get away with teething if asked before boarding.

amber, please take care of yourself.

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 18:54

Yay! Sleeping baby and cooked pizza. Life is nice.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 11/11/2010 19:06

Pizza is one of the finer things of life, I feel.

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 19:10

Would you like a slice, Small? I have loads!

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 11/11/2010 19:15

Oooh yum. Thank you. As long as it's not ham and pineapple.

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 19:20

No, it's not a Hawaiian. Mine is pepperoni -- what flavor did you choose?

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 11/11/2010 19:30

I loooove pepperoni. Any chance of some extra mushrooms and sweetcorn too?

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 19:32

Of course!

(This is the tea room of requirement, after all!)

I'm looking forward to pizza from home -- YUM!

UniS · 11/11/2010 19:39

pizza please. salami and mushroom if I may.

Hi WiTT and any other new bods I missed.

Preschool committee tonight, and I've just checked minutes of last one and found an action I hadn't done. Thankfully district council website held info required. hurrah.

Gotta run.
up to teh pub, we hold meeting in a sensible place.

pudding is on teh side, its your favourite, with custard, cream or ice cream to suit.

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 19:47

Mmm, thanks for the apple crumble!

I do love meetings in sensible places! Grin

oxeye · 11/11/2010 21:07

Welcome Dutch Oma am I right in thinking you're not Donki and that's how you made it to the tea room?
And welcome What, nice to meet you do you want to tell us about yourself at all?
Mistle I think Karate is a brilliant way of introducing boys to strength and discipline. It's compulsory in quite a lot of schools round here
Amber take care now. Sounds interesting
Mary oh sorry about ds. What a palavar

thumbwitch · 11/11/2010 21:37

goodness, I was up late last night! And back here again already.

I think I might have a 3rd addiction to deal with (as well as chocolate and wine) - internet comms! I have just discovered that I am also logged into MSN messenger - Hotmail has started showing my status and links directly to it, which I never noticed it did before, so that's yet another internet distraction.

I need something to do...

(and just in case anyone is confused by scout thanking me for my help on the slapped cheek, I did so Elsewhere, not on here :))

I think it's time for iced chocolate here - feeling a touch muggy and it's not yet 9am!

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 11/11/2010 21:41

Hello, Dutch Oma. A year or so ago you sent me a knitting pattern and told me that you really are a Dutch Oma! I just realised that it is you!

Silly girl from work came round to take some of Wriggle's baby things (pram, car seat, etc) because she is quite short of money and preganant and I thought it would be easier to let it all go to a good home. She told me that she thought it was 'mean' to have just one child; she would have at least two. I pointed out that I have only one - she said, I know, but it's mean. Luckily had just been thinking how absolutely OK I feel about the only thing (at the moment at least) ... but how silly and thoughtless. Shock

thumbwitch · 11/11/2010 21:47

HOw bloody rude, Serpent!! Am Shock that anyone could have the gall to be that rude to someone who is giving them stuff! I think I would have had troubles handing the stuff over. I would also have been tempted to retort something along the lines of "well let's hope nothing goes wrong in your pg that means you can't have more DC then - or you'll find out how sad that can be". Stupid, insensitive thing to say.
:(

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 22:08

That is rude, Serpent!

I have found since having BabyScout and knowing what I know about my health/the risks, I've even stopped asking people if they're hoping/planning to have any more and if said baby/child is their first. It's amazing how much "Is BabyScout your first?" can sting and I don't want to inflict that pain on anyone else.

Why is your coworker talking about a second when she hasn't had her first and she can't afford the one she's about to have?! That sort of thing drives me crazy!!

Good morning, thumb! Did you get ANY sleep?

DutchOma · 11/11/2010 22:17

I'm still not quite sure who you are Racing. Can't say the other as I'm phobic
And no, I'm not Donki, and I only said I was turning into Donki 'cause I liked carrot cake.
Going to bed now.

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 22:18

Clothes packed (including washkit and BabyScouts on-board washkit of calpol, bottom cream, powder, etc), bag in car
Nappy bag ready to go
Passports
Trash out (except nappy bag, which will go in the morning)
Christmas presents and British treats in car
Cameras by door for loading in the morning
Laptop will go with cameras
Toy bag w/nappy bag

What am I forgetting?

UniS · 11/11/2010 22:51

hair brush?

dollars?

snacks?

thumbwitch · 11/11/2010 22:51

have you wrapped the calpol separately within the washbag? I only ask because I always do this and sometimes it leaks (Lord knows how, seeing as I always make sure the lid it done up but still!)

Yes, I got about 5h sleep - not quite enough - I really need 7 but hey. I'll catch up tonight. I often find that if I have a really bad night's sleep, it takes me a couple of days to get a good one.

Tbh, so long as you have your passports, credit cards and everything you can't buy in the States/on the plane that you might need, you have everything.
Having said that, have you got BabyScout's food for the plane? And all the meds? And the doc's letter that will allow you to take needles on the plane (if you are?)

oxeye · 12/11/2010 00:07

Hi all
Scout, have a wonderful trip. Hope you are genned up on Slapcheek - I came across it when pregnant and it was one of the few illnesses that are really risky to pregnant women (rather to the babies) we had to cancel a family holiday ...
I am sure Thumb is the one for long haul baby travel advice, hope it goes well!
UniS like pub meetings

Scout19075 · 12/11/2010 02:31

Comb in washkit

Dollars -- Not sure I have any left and US bankcard at home w/Mom. Have US credit card in purse with all others

BabyScout snacks in nappy bag, will sort Scout snacks out later

Brand new box of Calpol since current bottle is sticky and only 1/3 full. I keep all of the meds in the boxes, in the clear make-up bag so I can just throw it in the security box.

I have milk for BabyScout, and some food, but those will go in hold. I'll get him some ready-made milk and food (though he also eats from my plate) airside. After my experience with security in May, taking food and milk through is not something I want to do if I can get it from Boots. They made me open milk (he was just starting to wean from nursing to formula) which I didn't need for 10 hours, so it was wasted. Same with food (again, he was just starting to wean to solids and I had pots of banana porridge which couldn't be used).

Doctor's letter I'm getting in the morning, at my appointment. Last appointment she said I shouldn't need one, but BA says you should take medicine/needles in carry-on, therefore you need a letter. She did say last appointment she'd do one for me tomorrow if I wanted/needed, so it's on my list. I also have my cool-bag and freezer packs to transport my medicine (will re-freeze freezer packs at inlaws tomorrow night).

Not actually flying until Saturday morning, but in-laws take us to Heathrow, so am headed to Berks straight from my hospital appointment in the morning (I'm 20 miles in the direction I need to go when going to the hospital, so makes sense to continue on).

Car packed, less cameras and nappy bag. Trash out to bin, except for nappy-genie which will go in the morning.

And BabyScout FINALLY back asleep -- was very unusual for him to not go back to sleep immediately after overnight feast (milk) and took an hour of babbling, whimpering and crying. Hopefully I can get a few more zzzzs, too.

Scout19075 · 12/11/2010 02:34

Oh -- and thumb, I work under the rule, too, of "if I don't have it I can buy it at Target." I have BabyScout's nappy bag bulked out to also include two spare outfits and a sleepsuit, in addition to twice the normal amount of nappies and a new package of wipes. He's a good little traveller but I work under the "I'd rather have too much than not enough" rule.

thumbwitch · 12/11/2010 02:57

Oh God yes!! Totally agree with that philosophy, even if it makes cabin luggage bigger/heavier than it needs to be!

Well, hope you get some sleep and if we don't hear from you before, speak to you Stateside! Good journey :)
