Tea Room the Nineteenth

amberlight · 02/11/2010 10:44

All in need of a restful break and a chat are more than welcome to the nineteenth Tea Room.

We find ourselves in the South of France, where the warm sunshine is just the thing for those who are missing the summer. The tea room has its aga and its distressed chintz sofa...and its potted plants. The usual fictional tea room inhabitants are here, as ever: Mellors, the gardener/handyperson with the handy ways with massage; the collection of tea room animals including the horses, camel, bison, guineapigs and sundry others; the Bishops and other faith leaders who joined us a while back and potter in for the occasional cuppa. It may not make sense, but that's not important. What matters is the lovely people here and the chance to just relax.

Hello, WhatIsThatThen. Welcome to the merry band of sisters.

WhyIsThatThen · 11/11/2010 10:17

Thanks!

I look forward to getting to know you all Smile

Oh and for the record, I'm not on MN, I'm doing housework Wink

MaryBS · 11/11/2010 10:28

WhyIsThatThen, no he doesn't have a statement - he's pretty bright and generally FAIRLY placid, and I think this has meant he doesn't struggle TOO much with certain aspects of school work - Maths for instance. The letter came from the SENCO, following a meeting with his class teacher and the SENCO on Monday.

WhyIsThatThen · 11/11/2010 11:14

Mary Sorry, I must have missed a bit, being a newbie, as I didn't know the school SENCO had written to you. Blush

I hope you can get some answers and DS can get the help he needs.

I have a friend whose DD has Dyspraxia, they struggled so much with the UK school system that they moved back to their native SA. She is now doing much better. So, although I know very little about Aspergers, I kind of understand what you are going through.

amberlight · 11/11/2010 11:26

I made her go to my house so it was somewhere familiar. She's lovely.

I now have a new advocate that I haven't met yet Shock Confused which is sort of good, because this one will help me twice as much and be able to shout (kindly) at me when I'm silly (lots of shouting, therefore).

Also social worker has been very very clear with me that I'm to give up a lot of my faith work around autism and give up on some of the other message boards as it's horribly bad for my mental health and wellbeing and I don't have the skills to do it.

Much to think on. no need for comment - just wittering on, really. I feel relieved that there's a cunning plan.

I need more tea. Anyone for a cup of something and a slice of tea room cake?

DutchOma · 11/11/2010 11:58

I'll have some Amber. And carrot cake, please, or lemon if any is available.

MaryBS · 11/11/2010 12:12

Welcome DO, and EEK! Amber!

WhyIsThatThen, don't worry, I frequently miss bits out of my story, leading to confusion all round - I forget what I have and haven't said! I also have Asperger Syndrome (was only diagnosed a couple of years ago - 1 year after my son had been diagnosed!).

Feeling a bit better as letter has been written - just needs an Amber to glance over it and give her most excellent opinion :o (thanks, sweetheart)

amberlight · 11/11/2010 12:17

I'd give it an hour or two before you get any sense out of me...brain fried Confused.

Hello fried people!
Welcome to DutchOma, glad you decided to join us as well :).

Mary - :( re DS and hope something gets sorted for him - haven't they a library or anything that he can go into by himself for a while? Daft not to even attempt to accommodate him!

Amber - glad your SW is taking you in hand and doing the stern-look-over-the-pince-nez type thing to abash you into behaving! Grin. How much will you have left if you give up your faith work though? You don't want to back out of everything, that would be too un-amberish. I think avoiding the minefield-type internet forums is probably a good idea for a while though. Perhaps when your wiring has cooled down you might be able to re-venture in their direction but I suspect that you need to give your wires a good rest. :)

Did I already say hello to WITT?? [forgetful as well as daft emoticon] If not, hello and welcome!

MT - hope MC enjoys the karate! A good discipline for him, perhaps. Do you think he is old enough to watch Karate Kid? You could get him waxing your car and painting the fence! Grin

amberlight · 11/11/2010 13:21

TW, loads, to answer your q about how much work I'd have left without the faith work. About 15 different lovely organisations at the moment. It's just been some people in some faith communities and related message boards who have been terrifying, which is very odd and nothing I can explain.

OP posts:
mistlethrush · 11/11/2010 13:21

TW - definitely no karate kid here.... Shock. What he's learning is (for the moment at least) non-contact.... I think that they have 'cushions' to hit and kick (but I'm really very vague on what they do as you can't watch without them seeing and I really don't want to distract him Blush)

I did, however, have a word with the karate instructor last week and asked if there was any problem with him in terms of his behaviour - got the response 'No, of course not, that's what we do'. Which I heartily support Grin

He does quite well in yoga bugs too - although at the end of the last lesson I heard the instructor (who is not much taller than him) commenting that he needed to excercise one muscle a lot less (his tongue). Quite annoyed that the 'flex dance' is on the same day as karate... but definitely want him to do the karate. He will have his first belt grading at the beginning of December Smile

thumbwitch · 11/11/2010 13:38

Amber, it is sort of odd and yet not. From my own experience, I have found that some of the most pig-headed, unforgiving, dogmatic chauvinists can be found in the congregations of some churches. I don't know why - don't know what draws them to being Christian - but they certainly seem to have ishoos with comprehending the basic Christian tenets of love, forgiveness and understanding. The hypocrisy and piousness (in the least pleasant setting of the word) that my mum found in our local Methodist church was the main reason that she never set foot in it unless dragged by main force. It is such a shame that you have come up against quite a few of these bods, as I can't believe they are in the majority.

MT - All sounds good. We do Little Kickers here (might have mentioned it before) and there is one little boy in the class who appears to have hyperactive behavioural ishoos - the coach is so patient and calm-yet-firm with him, it's brilliant to see. He's only young as well, the coach - but has a fantastic way with the littlies.

I had a nasty experience this evening - was supping my wine spritzer, got to the last mouthful and felt something bump my lip - a bloody drowned fly! Cheeky barsteward, drowning in my drink! Anyway, I ended up spitting my mouthful mostly over my t-shirt - thankfully red wine spritzer comes out a sight easier than neat red wine. And more thankfully, I wasn't sculling the wine as normal and didn't swallow the wretched insect!

amberlight · 11/11/2010 13:46

TW, yes there are many lovely people in churches, faith communities and otherwise. It's a minority who cause panic and sadness.

Eek re the fly. Tell it to get its own bloomin' wine!

Brief visit until BabyScout is napping -- any medical types, do you know if you can still travel (read: fly) with Slapped Cheek?

mistlethrush · 11/11/2010 13:59

I'm sure there was a thread on that about 2yrs ago...

I hope that this doesn't stop you having your trip - or is it getting back home?

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 14:00

MT, do you know how to search? I haven't figured that out....

mistlethrush · 11/11/2010 14:04

Go to 'advanced search' - purple button over on the RH top - you get to put in what you want in various search options.

I'd put in slapped cheek tostart with and see how many threads.... you may well be able to skim quite a few.

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 14:12
  1. Shock Combos of flying/travelling w/Slapped Cheek aren't helping. Neither is google. ARGH!
mistlethrush · 11/11/2010 14:18

I think it might have been chicken pox and flying.... because I can't find it either.

BUt it looks as though you really need TW around as she was saying something that looked sensible on another thread where slapped cheek was mentioned.

mistlethrush · 11/11/2010 14:24

Scout: www.patient.co.uk/health/Slapped-Cheek-Disease.htm

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erythema_infectiosum

Both of these suggest that once the rash has come out the infectious period is over...

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 14:25

Thanks MT! Grin

Scout19075 · 11/11/2010 14:25

Rash definitely out!

MaryBS · 11/11/2010 16:57

thumbwitch, they have a library, but they've said he has to be supervised. Not sure why as he is likely to be perfectly happy there, and without other kids to wind him up, would not be disruptive.
