Tea Room 17 - The Tropical Beach Hut

amberlight · 23/07/2010 14:41

Welcome to the 17th version of the Tea Room. We find ourselves on a tropical beach, with the tea room now in a beach hut on stilts, the waves lapping on the golden sands beneath. Palm trees surround us. Our virtual gardener/beach surfing dude/handyman, Mellors, is here to tend to your every need. He looks like the person of your dreams (male, female or otherwise ). There are of course holidaying Bishops and other leaders of faith, the Camels, the Bison, various guinea pigs, the tea room horses, a life-size cut out of George Clooney, the NMBs (please don't ask me to explain how Mohawk Babies joined us, and a wide variety of other virtual followers. We chat, we relax, we share how life is. All in need of friendship are most welcome. The kettle is on...and the distressed chintz sofa has of course made the journey over. Enjoy.

No probs :), I'm a Lay Reader (ie not ordained). Justabout is the curate, if you remember her?

JBsmama · 14/09/2010 21:22

Just read back... Scout, what's up? Did you give your resignation to your line manager and did it come back at you as a paper airplane? Grin

UniS · 14/09/2010 21:34

Mary's a Lay reader, Justa a Curate and Mellors is the Lay weeder. Righto. Got that sorted then.

I interviewed a babysitter today !!! eeek. Will be first time we leave Boy with youngish teenage baby sitter. However she comes recommended by her mum (?!) And HAS YOUNGER BROTHER SO IS NOT UNAWARE OF SMALL BOYS. sorry, found caps lock by accident. Teen is rather cheaper than a nature lady who has obliged on occasion and I'm out of reciprocal sits just at present.

WHen am I going to be able to make boy responsible for bring home his own ballet stuff? YET again we have managed to leave it at teh hall after class and its been rescued YET again by the other family who have boys in ballet classes.

Ho hum.

Any one for hot spiced apple drink? I believe its alcoholic and most delishous.

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 14/09/2010 21:40

at Lay Weeder. I do remember Justa, although I haven't seen her about for ages.

Unis - You have been leaving Boy with a (gasp) nature lady? Do you mean the lady from SpringWatch? Or a naturist?

And they never, it seems, get the hang of bringing their own stuff home. That's why I sew a zillion name tapes into everything - at least I can then reclaim it from lost property.

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 14/09/2010 21:49

I never manage to return from any visit to anyone or anywhere without leaving behind at least one item, and I am 163, so no hope for UniBoy.

Scout19075 · 14/09/2010 22:02

Do you remember, a few weeks back, I said about a woman from work (not my LM and not HR) emailing me about my return to work? Well the other week I sent my LM my resignation and copied HR in it. I've tried to get a hold of my LM, left a VM and when I tried again today his VM said he was on holiday. So I broke down and called that woman that emailed me, just saying I needed some advice and could she call me when she got a chance. In the meantime I got ahold of HR, HR called me back, confirmed my letter was received, the department notified and my letter/details in the post. When woman called me back I said I had tried to get ahold of my LM to confirm the letter had been received but I got it all sorted with HR in the end and that I had just been calling to get a name or something to confirm the letter had been received. She must have said "LM can't do anything to help you" at least three times. As I said to HR and to her, I sent my resignation to my LM as my LM as is protocol when doing so under normal circumstances. ARGH!

Seriously, when do you not resign to your LM? I have ALWAYS resigned to my LM/immediate supervisor. Grant it, they can't DO anything other than notify HR and get the ball rolling, but surely it's protocol. Even in the UK I've always resigned to my LM.

Not CofE, so what's a Lay Reader and a Curate?

How is it that there was a girl at Guides who stood up as part of the "went to camp and this was my favorite bit" group and I don't even recognize her as a girl, let alone a camper?! Maybe I sniffed too much Christmas Pudding Brandy....

JBsmama · 14/09/2010 22:34

How do you sniff brandy?

UniS · 14/09/2010 22:46

Arrrggh

Mature Lady, not nature... my typoing is getting silly, sorry.

thumbwitch · 14/09/2010 23:01

put it in a glass, swirl it and inhale. Works for me! Only then I drink it too.. Blush

Scout - That Woman seems to delight in being a turd to you so Ignore her. She knows Nothing Useful and HR are dealing with it.

Have nothing useful to contribute to list of Brownie/Guide words, assuming you have all the names of the various packs, or does that vary from troop to troop? Our Brownies were all Sprites, Imps, Pixies, Elves, Leprechauns - dont' think we had any goblins or gnomes though. I think, but am not sure, that we had birds or prey in our Guides - but I never went into it so couldn't tell you for certain.

I thought Mellors was Layer-in-general, rather than just of weeds?

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 14/09/2010 23:04

Many years ago, I went on a tour of the Hennessy cognac distillery in Cognac. Apparently, once the cognac is put in barrels to mature - I'm a bit hazy about the details now - half of it evaporates. They call it the moitie des anges. So I imagine that standing downwind of that and sniffing would be an interesting experience!

Good night one and all. I'm going up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire.

UniS · 14/09/2010 23:19

night all.

Scout19075 · 15/09/2010 09:21

Morning!

Fry up available for those in need.

MaryBS · 15/09/2010 10:35

Would love a fry up. Complete with cognac.

A Lay Reader is someone who is not ordained, but is licensed by the church to preach, teach and lead worship. A curate can be someone who is newly ordained but not yet made a priest, or an assistant priest.

Feeling argh. Can I have my breakfast in the priest's hole please?

Scout19075 · 15/09/2010 10:47

Please excuse my ignorance, but does that mean that some who teaches Sunday School for the children needs to be a Lay Reader?

MaryBS · 15/09/2010 10:57

No, Sunday school doesn't require a lay reader. Although Readers DO sometimes get involved in Sunday School, its more likely leading bible study groups or preparing candidates for confirmation etc. Again, though you don't HAVE to be a Reader to do those things either! More info here

Scout19075 · 15/09/2010 11:10

Cool. Thanks!

I'm RC and at my church in Minnesota I used to work with the teen group (think Sunday School, but for high school kids). They weren't the ones going for confirmation, as they had separate classes for that, but for the rest of them. We used to lead activites, a Bible study, a witness, etc. You didn't need any certificate for that, just a desire to work with the teens. There was a Youth Minister who we took direction from, and he would lead trainings and retreats, but that was all the training required.

Was just curious. Grin

amberlight · 15/09/2010 12:20

Voodoo dolls!? Shock

Half way through auditors auditing at work. Need tea.

DS now playing in a rugby match after his eye was declared healed yesterday (though we won't find out more until three months' time)

Afternoon tea, anyone?

I was under the impression that the only things which Mellors ever laid were the table and the lawn. He is, obviously, the Ideal Man and Embodiment of All Virtues, but must remain aloof and unattainable.

amberlight · 15/09/2010 17:36

Yes please for afternoon tea.

Passed the audit!!!!! Oh phew.

JBsmama · 15/09/2010 20:02

Would anyone like a fresh raspberry muffin? Both the raspberries and the muffins are fresh :)

teafortwo · 15/09/2010 20:52

Double fresh muffins sound fab I will have 2 can I have double cream on them or is that simply going too far??!!??

D'ja know loads of Milk's mates are signing up for... judo... Confused

AIBU to think 4 yr olds + judo = "blaaaaaaaah yuk mess!"

Milk is going to a combined dance and music class - far more skippy, jingly, fun and lovely imho!!! Grin

It got me wondering - What clubs do the tearoom children all do and what do you think of them? [making notes for future reference emotion]

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 15/09/2010 21:01

Hello, Tea

One of SmallGirl's, ahem, not so dainty friends started judo after deciding that ballet was not her tasse de the. To date, our list of extra-curricular activities has been

Ballet - SmallGirl is less enthusiastic now that the pink sparkly stage is over and it's all about one's battement tendu, but she's had a lot of fun over the years and is remarkably supple.

Gymnastics - Fantastic, bouncy fun but abandoned because of timetabling clash with the aforesaid ballet.

Brownies - She loves this and, anyway, Brown Owl (who is a dreadful old trout) won't let her leave. Wink Blush

Would anyone like some Bolly with their muffin?

teafortwo · 15/09/2010 21:36

Grin - hey you x

I remember at the famous London meetup thinking she was very supple... especially when she was swinging from the cherry tree in various fancy ways!!!

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 15/09/2010 21:54

Yes, she is remarkably bendy.

Scout19075 · 15/09/2010 21:59

I'm not sure BabyScout's activities would do much good for you, but we do AquaBabies (I think in the spring term he can go to the toddler swimming group) and Mini Makers (which is messy play for the 0-18 month olds). We have done Infant Massage and Sing & Sign. We go to the library singing if I remember, a village tots group when I can be bothered and we used to go to breastfeeding group but haven't been in two months because of my schedule. We mght start going to Naught-to-Walk and Tea & Toast, but not sure. We both really enjoy swimming "lessons" and messy play.
