Chatty thread for ND mumsnetters

I thought I'd try and start a friendly chatty thread here on the ND board. All are welcome. Bring a cuppa.

I'm whiskeyaramadillo. I'm late 40s and AuDHD. I have a ND parent and two ND children - my third DC is NT ish. I work full time and live on the western edge of London but my heart is firmly in the countryside which is where I grew up. I have one black and white cat who is my sunshine although he is in my bad books today after bringing in a mouse.

Today (Sunday) I'm sorting out my very very messy house - again. Making sure homework is done and uniforms are clean. Putting endless pants and socks in drawers. If I'm lucky I'll get to lie on the sofa and continue reading 'Wintering' by Katherine May or watch a bit of a crappy fantasy movie with a giant mug of tea.

What is everyone up to today?

I'm hoping for 1970s and 1980s one

You probably already know this but I read that a prequel of CTM will be happening but not sure when. I think that’s going to be interesting and there’s also going to be a film

I'm currently addicted to Married at First Sight Australia which I know is a load of dreck but I find it so relaxing for some strange reason 😂

@Newyearsparkle Oh I love those too, I went to Eden camp last year for their 1940s weekend and it was amazing, I had such a good day. It's a bit of a trek for us otherwise I'd be there all the time. Also did the Black Country museum, and of course the Imperial War Museum in London - I love it all! I loved 1940s House (you can find it on youtube) as well as 1900s house (a bit harder to find - I also love the Edwardian period). Can't deal with Call the Midwife at the moment - I can't watch anything with babies in for silly personal reasons (maybe I'll try again one day).
Try not to be too hard on yourself about your clothes, I get like that too with things and I think it's a coping mechanism.
@InertBird I agree with you about music, I always say I hate it but what I hate is music as background noise. I enjoy singing along in the car or in the kitchen though. What sort of music do you like?
I agree with you about colouring too - it makes my ears ring, I hate the sound!!

I've never heard of an eden camp..was it good

InertBird · 09/04/2026 15:42

@bedfrog was the 1900s/1940s House the one with that historian called Ruth something? She also did the Tudor/Edwardian etc Farm series. I love those shows. The thing I love is how they show the details of everyday life in the time period: so interesting.

Now I'll have to google Eden camp because I've never heard of this either!

Have you been to Dennis Severs House in Spitalfields (if I remember correctly) - perfectly preserved as if stepping back into the 18th century

InertBird · 09/04/2026 15:45

Regarding music, I like all sorts of genres. I got massively into classical music when I was a weirdo teenager and used to get the scores out of the library and 'read along' while listening (how did no one twig that I was autistic?). I don't really do that any more but still love chamber music, but also all sorts of other things like big band jazz, the Beatles, ska. A bit of everything. But it can't be on in the background because brain itch.

bedfrog · 09/04/2026 16:01

@Newyearsparkle It was amazing! It's an old POW camp and all the exhibits are in huts. It's very authentic and a lovely day out.
@InertBird Ruth Goodman! I love her. No, the 1940s and 1900s houses are old (2001?) and I'm pretty sure one of them has Marguerite Patton featured. They're lovely. I haven't been to that Dennis Severs place - I'm up in Scotland so don't really go to London any more, but I will keep it in mind if I ever find myself there.
I also love classical and big band stuff and also the 2000s rock music I grew up with 😊
Isn't it funny the weird things we remember doing, I'm always surprised nobody made the connection with me either. I used to spend hours and hours just inside my own head (still do). I used to make instruction booklets for things like how to make my razr scooter fly 😂

InertBird · 09/04/2026 17:09

@bedfrog the Eden camp sounds fab! Thank you for remembering it's Ruth Goodman - I love her shows so much. I don't think I've come across this older show before so I'll google it, thank you!

Really identify with the spending hours and hours inside your own head. I never get bored of being in my own head, it's my favourite place to be tbh. Love your instruction booklets you used to make, that is brilliant 😃

Mine are reading, logic puzzles and knitting. Love the happy colour app.

JewelleryCat · 09/04/2026 18:47

@Cherrypi I also use the happy colour app! I use it every day, love the pictures on there

I like to complete the daily one as well and I’m glad it’s a bit cooler weather wise today. I don’t do well in hot weather, how are you?

Cherrypi · 10/04/2026 10:57

Full of cold which feels unreasonable in February.

Newyearsparkle · 10/04/2026 11:05

With all the stress ,I did no cleaning in the whole of march except bathrooms.
Now I can't bare to be home
I need a tidy clean home to be relaxed .
I don't know where to start
But it's giving me major ick
Adding the dog hair to the dust ,and I've 3 floors of cleaning to do .
Does anyone have any tips for me ..
Other than get a cleaner , because that just causes arguments and resentment

Newyearsparkle · 10/04/2026 11:08

Normally I have a routine of one room day ..but I'm rushing through it ,an not doing jobs like skirting boards
So Monday bathroom, Tuesday, stairs , Wednesday kitchen.
For example..but I need to break it down to things like clean oven ,clean microwave clean windows.. because none of that is getting done

Newyearsparkle · 10/04/2026 11:09

Oh ..I bet there's an on going cleaning thread on here I could join

There’s a flylady thread that runs every month in housekeeping if that takes your fancy

Could it be bad hayfever? Because the weather has been nice, the pollen count has been very high

I could give fly lady another go I suppose

I tried with it but at that time, my health conditions took priority so I couldn’t really do it. I’m not sure if there’s another cleaning thread on here apart from flylady

Cherrypi · 10/04/2026 12:59

I hope it's not hayfever because I feel really rubbish and have been shivery and drowsy. I use the organised mum method when I need a reset. Her cleaning routine is quite prescriptive and takes the thinking out of it.

Justploddingonandon · 10/04/2026 14:11

I’ve just bought how to keep house while drowning in the hope of getting my own cleaning under control. Of course I haven’t actually managed to read more than half yet, but it suggests starting small so start with one room and put all the rubbish in a bin bag, then take any dirty dishes to the kitchen and dirty clothes to a Landry basket, then put everything in that room that has a place back where it belongs, then address stuff that doesn’t have a place ( these things don’t all have to be done at once).
I’m asst the half I haven’t read addresses when you actually do the dishes/ laundry/ clean the bathroom.

Newyearsparkle · 10/04/2026 15:15

I've got that book , haven't read it though
Will dig it out and have a look
Does anyone else find they stopped reading books..I simply can't remember what I've read when I get to the end of the page ,so I gave up reading years ago.
I remember struggling at university to retain information, and I don't think I've read for pleasure since I was a child ,and even then I just read the same books over and over .
That's quite sad really

Newyearsparkle · 10/04/2026 15:17

@Justploddingonandon ..I've made a start on what was really bothering me ,which was paintwork and ledges ..looks much better ..I can just never keep momentum up , nothing is ever consistent with me

InertBird · 10/04/2026 17:01

@Newyearsparkle I used to be a massive bookworm and I really struggle these days to maintain enough focus to get through a book. I'm so sad about this because I love reading and miss it. I wonder if it's a combination of menopause and general erosion of attention span because of social media/the internet in general. Maybe nothing to do with autism? Not sure 🤔
