Does anyone else feel like the Islamophobia on Mumsnet has ramped up in recent days?

There have been several faux innocent threads started which have given posters the opportunity to be open in their Islamophobia. It’s truly depressing to read.

OP posts:

yep

its open season

IClaudine · 29/04/2024 11:19

I am not Muslim but I popped in here to see if there was a thread about this as it is very noticeable. It is disgusting and I am really sorry you have to see it. 💐

I am also not a Muslim but I agree and I'm posting to show solidarity.

Racism and ableism is also on the rise here.

Vanessashanessajenkins2 · 29/04/2024 13:30

I've just responded on the main thread about islamophobia. I think there's a lot of anti religion sentiment in general but particularly islamophobia seems on the rise in my experience reading the comments on various social media platforms, in a way it wasn't a few years ago.

My cousin who lives in Bradford is moving to another city to start her placement for her optometry degree. She has agreed with her family not to wear her headscarf whilst she is doing this because they are quite scared for her safety.

TwilightSkies · 29/04/2024 13:30

Yes 100%!

Saschka · 29/04/2024 13:37

I think it has been fairly blatant on the pro-Israel threads ever since October - unfortunately some people have used that as an excuse for general Islamophobia. And yes it is awful. Lots of deletions, but still a lot of stuff which just skates under the line in terms of site rules but is still blatantly anti-Muslim.

LadyKenya · 29/04/2024 13:38

Yes, I agree. It is very sad what is happening in this Country at present. So much division, and racist rhetoric being spouted by those in power, is particularly repugnant. The fact that the Conservatives have allowed, and stand behind their Mayoral candidate who has said some disgusting things, speaks volumes.

LadyKenya · 29/04/2024 13:40

Sorry, in answer to the OP's question, yes I do think that there has been a lot of posts denigrating Islam on here lately.

therealcookiemonster · 29/04/2024 13:41

tbh I feel things have been going downhill for a while both in society and on mumsnet. People feel its perfectly acceptable to be islamophobic because for years, Islam and Muslims have been portrayed in a negative light by right wing media narrative. and for a while the tories have been using Muslim bashing as a means of winning elections

Parkingt111 · 29/04/2024 13:45

Ah yes there definitely has been a rise on here, I don't think there is much that can be done about it though
People with such views are not easily swayed

Parkingt111 · 29/04/2024 14:01

Honour killing and animal cruelty is also rooted in Islam according to some 👀

Hoppinggreen · 29/04/2024 14:05

Not a Muslim but I was away from MN for 6 months and in the few weeks I been back I have been appalled at the hate I have seen for Muslims.
There is a thread at the moment where people are using the fact that a Muslim said something bad to a friends cousins, uncles, wifes dog once 10 years ago to prove how awful all Muslims are.
I am sorry you ladies are having to face this here and genuinely hope its not as bad IRL, although I fear it may be

Parkingt111 · 29/04/2024 14:11

@Hoppinggreen oh gosh, I haven't even come across that one and it's already bad enough

@biscuitnut not content with ranting on the main boards, you have now come to have a go at the Muslims on the Muslim board too?

gestroopd · 29/04/2024 14:17

Definitely.

BibiSuzanne · 29/04/2024 14:17

Not a Muslim but a Christian Palestinian on a particular thread and now totally understand how awful Islamophobia is. Constantly being told to justify my views, my words are scrutinised and I then have to explain exactly what I mean. And even then not believed or taken seriously. Granted it's only a handful of Mumsnetters but one in particular I find intimidating. Now doubt she'll come on here and call me batshit again 😔

Completely agree.

TakeMe2Insanity · 29/04/2024 14:18

It’s just tiring.

I personally hate the term islamaphobic. I’d much prefer the term anti-islamic.

Maybe go and have a look at Culture vs Religion - its nicely explained on the other thread you are posting similar statements on.
You know a lot of these murders (I refuse to use the term Honour killings) are carried out in India by non Muslims dont you?

The door is over there. Please leave.

AliAta · 29/04/2024 14:21

No I don't feel this way and it's not OK to shut down important discussions under the cloak of 'isms' and something-phobias, nothing is beyond discussion or questioning. If you're confident in your faith and the reasoning for your faith is clear to you then it doesn't matter if Islam is criticized, even better you might be able to advocate for your faith and clarify things to educate others which will gain you credit in heaven.
In many Muslim countries people can't have the discussions we are having here, thanks to the sacrifice of many to grant this freedom and privilege and I detest the attempts to censor conversations here or suppress them. Nobody's faith or lack of faith is beyond discussion or criticism.

Apologies to the Muslim ladies here if I am wrong but doesnt the Quran say that both men and women should dress modestly? Does Islam specifically say that women only must cover up?
I know several Muslim men who would never wear shorts for example
