what cover versions really really annoy you?

And which do you like?

On the chat thread , someone said they were snobby about people liking songs that are COVERS by x-factor artists, and that they don't realise they are covers. I suppose Alex covering hallelujah (how very dare she??) is an obvious one.

I have always HATED 'she's the one' as COVERED by Robbie Williams- it always made me irrationally that when it was out NO-ONE ever mentioned World Party....

will now ponder which cover I like....

American Pie covered by Madonna.

I do not like it at all.

drowninginclutter · 25/04/2009 20:37

Anything by Westlife but particularly Cat Stevens Father to Son. Terrible in so many ways.

Stinkyfeet · 25/04/2009 20:38

That was Boyzone, not Westlife!

janeite · 25/04/2009 20:40

Covers I like -
Happy Birthday (Altered Images) by The Wedding Present. Also their version of Come Up And See Me Make Me Smile.

Everyday Is Like Sunday (Morrissey) by 10000 Maniacs.

Victoria (The Kinks) by The Fall (way better than the original).

Silliest cover ever:
Anarchy In The Uk by Frasier Chorus

Crap covers
That thing with the two blokes who used to be in Casualty or some such with the wailing voices. Can picture them but can't remember names or song.

Raahh · 25/04/2009 20:41

they tend to blend into one big cover version, Boyzone and Westlife...

Hallelujah by Alexandra Burke

and Comfortably Numb by the Scissor Sisters (who I otherwise love) drove me insane

nickytwotimes · 25/04/2009 20:41

Hallelujah by X Factor person

Home by Westlife. It used to be a nice ballad by Michael Buble before they murdered it.

Comewhinewithme · 25/04/2009 20:42

Do you mean Robson and Jerome Janeite?

They were pants.

franke · 25/04/2009 20:43

"Here come the girls" by whatever girl band did it. very poor indeed.

drowninginclutter · 25/04/2009 20:43

I think I should probably be proud rather than ashamed that I don't know the difference between Boyzone and Westlife. One huge pile of awfulness!

and a tiny bit

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/04/2009 20:44

That awful fucking snow patrol cover by can't even recall her name. WROONG.

Uptown Girl - Westlife or whoever it was

ANY cover by Celine Dion.

Raahh · 25/04/2009 20:45

My favourite cover - but is a bit obscure to most, i guess, is Song to the Siren, as done by This Mortal Coil (orig Tim Buckley).

I also get cross on behalf of the Zutons that everyone thinks Valerie is Amy Winehouse's song...

Oh God, all of the above.

Too Close, originally by 90's R&B group Next, re-recorded by (fecking!) Blue. The original was a sexy club smash. The Blue version featured Lee Ryan heavy breathing. Urgh.

lou33 · 25/04/2009 20:46

all saints under the bridge

Raahh · 25/04/2009 20:47

ooh, forgot Under the bridge- that was sacrilege...

OP posts:
pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/04/2009 20:47

Jealous Guy - Roxy Music cover, although DH thinks that Lennon's version was also a cover, just a bloody good one.

MrsMattie · 25/04/2009 20:47

The Tide is High - Atomic Shitten version. Bleurgh.

Greensleeves · 25/04/2009 20:47

the fucking fugees and killing me softly

thin lizzy's shit version of whiskey in the jar

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/04/2009 20:47

OMG I forgot about that All Saints Under the Bridge cover - you made me remember, how could you?!!! Awful

lou33 · 25/04/2009 20:48

whoever allowed them to do it should be shot

TigerFeet · 25/04/2009 20:49

yy to under the bridge & killing me softly

I had managed to erase many of these from my brain until now

MrsMattie · 25/04/2009 20:50

Britney - I Love Rock & Roll.

No you don't, you lying beeyatch!

pavlovthepregnantcat · 25/04/2009 20:50

Although I did think NINs Hurt covered by Johnny Cash was pretty amazing, probably the best cover I have ever heard.

daftpunk · 25/04/2009 20:52

was it leona lewis?..(snow patrol cover)

snigger · 25/04/2009 20:55

I like the Nouvelle Vague cover of Dead Kennedys Too Drunk To F*, it seems quite kinky in this breathy French girls voice.

I hated that Marilyn Manson cover of Personal Jesus - utter abomination.
