Different Drum - the Linda Ronstadt version (in the Stone Poneys). Reminds me of a relationship that didn't work out 35 years ago and has not worked again after being rekindled. It could be me singing that song. The words are so perfect and it just makes me sad.

You’ve Got The Power, by Snap. Remember dancing to it when it first came out at The Fridge in Brixton. Had just moved to London, it was all very exciting. Good times.

I Left My Heart in San Francisco - Tony Bennett, always makes me think of my little old Dad, no longer with us. I hated all that (what I saw as) cheesy listening when I was young, but I’ve come to love it.

I remember my dad singing this song as he got ready to go out. He used to go out for a couple of pints once a week, Friday, and he’d be in a good mood beforehand, singing Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Nat King Cole. Maybe a bit of Sinatra, to himself.

Sand and Water by Beth Neilsen Chapman. She wrote it after her husband died and she was raising their son. My DS godmother sang it at DH funeral.

Aah. I used to get embarrassed at my Dad's music knowledge. He could tell you the entire Top 10! I remember him shaking his head in disbelief when Top Of The Pops was moved nights and then ultimately cancelled.

@EmptyInTheValley i LOVE that song! As you say, the lyrics are sad but so poignant to some of us. Written by Mike Nesmith of The Monkeys who unjustifiably got themselves a bit of a rep as airheads. Not so.

@SaraHoliday yeah I think it’s in the teenage Handbook that you HAVE to be embarrassed by your parents. But when I think of him now .. he was such a lovely bloke my dad.

TOTP .. it was the end of an era when it was cancelled.

Totally agree re the Monkees! Initially seen as frivolous as manufactured but I think have become more respected over time. As they deserve. And Mike Nesmith, swoon. I love his version of his own song too but Linda Ronstadt's voice just hits home for me.
