In your opinion of courseWink

We've had the weirdest (I'm a serious as cancer springs to mind) and the best first lines so what do you think is the best lyric/line/s ever?
Can be one you love for the cheese factor, something meaningful for you or something you think is just brilliant song writing.

Ill start with

She's a myth that I have to believe in. All I need to make it real is one more reason. I don't know what to do.
Slipknott-Vermillion pt 2.

I've got wild staring eyes, I've got a strong urge to fly,

But I got nowhere to fly to

Nobhead · 24/04/2012 22:25

"My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies, fairytales of yesterday would grow but never dies, I can fly my friend." Queen The show must go on.
"Oh eeee oh ahh ahh, ting tang, wallaballabingbang." The Cartoons Witch Doctor- very profound.

Cold concrete apartments
Rise up from wet black asphalt
Below them a few carcasses
Of the long gone age of privacy

It takes a scary kind of illness
To design a place like this for pay
Downtown's an endless generic mall
Of video games and fast food chains

One by one
The little houses are bricked up and condemned
A subtle hint to move
Before the rats move in

.

This song is 27 years old and accurately represents the Great Britain of today. Look at what is happening all over the country; perfectly good houses are being knocked down and they're being replaced by badly designed, poorly constructed boxes.

Love these threads, haven't read it all, will do when I've got more time :)

But one of my favourite (few) lines is from Nick Drakes "Poor Boy"-

Nobody knows, how cold it grows
And nobody sees, how shakey my knees
Nobody cares, how steep my stairs
And nobody smiles, as you cross their stiles

ChamberPotOfDestiny · 25/04/2012 23:20

'So, what if I never hold you, yeah
Or kiss your lips again?
So I never want to leave you
And the memories of us to see
I beg don't leave me

Seize the day or die
Regretting the time you lost
It's empty and cold without you here
Too many people to ache over'

Seize the day - Avenged Sevenfold

'When you go
Just know that I will remember you

I lost my fear of falling
I will be with you
I will be with you'

It's not a fashion statement, it's a death wish - My Chemical Romance

'Never wanted to dance with nobody but YOU!'

Never wanted to dance - Mindless Self Indulgence

And

'All we are, all we are
Is bullets I mean this'

Demolition Lovers - My Chemical Romance

" A new career
In Korea"

Depeche Mode

I second the poster who quoted The Smiths
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry and you want to die.

But you have to imagine the glorious twanging guitar to get the full angsty effect!

Muckamuck · 25/04/2012 23:34

So if you want to be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery

First Day Of My Life, Bright Eyes

Muckamuck · 26/04/2012 16:14

Feeling like a thread-killer at the mo! Sad

And have managed to find myself like a bull in front of a red rag unwittingly entering into two bunfights this week Sad

Perhaps it's time to reassess things!

JeanBodel · 26/04/2012 16:21

'All I want is a cup of tea'

Ballad of Jack, The Dogs D'Amour.

The Enemy - we'll live and die in these towns

My heart's in the basement, my weekend's at an all-time low - Queen Bitch by David Bowie.

Beware of the flowers, 'cause I'm sure they're gonna get you, yeah - John Otway

I'm partial to your abracadabra - Ian Dury and the Blockheads

I love 'This Is The Day' and I love The The. Glad to 'meet' a fellow fan.

I also love 'Just Like A Woman' by Dylan and 'Nature Boy' by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.

Muckamuck · 26/04/2012 16:45

Phew.

margoandjerry · 26/04/2012 16:47

I love Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys:

Well now then Mardy Bum
Oh I'm in trouble again, aren't I
I thought as much
Cause you turned over there
Pulling that silent disappointment face
The one that I can't bear

Can't we laugh and joke around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Oh, but it's right hard to remember
That on a day like today when you're all argumentative
And you've got the face on

Atreegrowsinbrooklyn · 26/04/2012 16:49

"Nature Boy" - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

I was just a boy when I sat down
To watch the news on TV
I saw some ordinary slaughter
I saw some routine atrocity
My father said, don't look away
You got to be strong, you got to be bold, now
He said, that in the end it is beauty
That is going to save the world, now

And she moves among the sparrows
And she floats upon the breeze
She moves among the flowers
She moves something deep inside of me

I was walking around the flower show like a leper
Coming down with some kind of nervous hysteria
When I saw you standing there, green eyes, black hair
Up against the pink and purple wisteria
You said, hey, nature boy, are you looking at me
With some unrighteous intention?
My knees went weak,
I couldn't speak, I was having thoughts
That were not in my best interests to mention

And she moves among the flowers
And she floats upon the smoke
She moves among the shadows
She moves me with just one little look

You took me back to your place
And dressed me up in a deep sea diver's suit
You played the patriot, you raised the flag
And I stood at full salute
Later on we smoked a pipe that struck me dumb
And made it impossible to speak
As you closed in, in slow motion,
Quoting Sappho, in the original Greek

She moves among the shadows
She floats upon the breeze
She moves among the candles
And we moved through the days
and through the years

Years passed by, we were walking by the sea
Half delirious
You smiled at me and said, Babe
I think this thing is getting kind of serious
You pointed at something and said
Have you ever seen such a beautiful thing?
It was then that I broke down
It was then that you lifted me up again

She moves among the sparrows
And she walks across the sea
She moves among the flowers
And she moves something deep inside of me

She moves among the sparrows
And she floats upon the breeze
She moves among the flowers
And she moves right up close to me

I believe he wrote this about his then partner, the model Susie Bick.

What's she gonna look like with a chimney on her?

lop37 · 26/04/2012 17:44

Also, What kind of fuckery are we? Amy winehouse.
I'd rather stay single and thin. Catatonia.

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye, your scarf it was apricot

Carly Simon, You're So Vain

As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like the Olympus above the Serengeti

Toto, Africa

Surely the most contrived lyric in the musical universes.

Bucharest · 27/04/2012 06:30

Want to add:

"I want to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free"

and

"I get the feeling I may know you, as a lover and a friend, this voice keeps whispering,in my inner ear, tells me I may never see you again"

Bucharest · 27/04/2012 06:31

atreegroesinbrooklyn (lovely book!)

I think apart from Angie, This is the day is my most favourite song in the world.

I had a day like that once....

I got together with DH when 'This Is The Day' was playing. We danced around the kitchen table to it as you do after a few sherberts...Grin.

It makes my spirits soar...

So many goodies here, these are mine:

'I would go out tonight, but I haven't got a stitch to wear' - the smiths, this charming man

'He knows theres fewer more distressing sights than that, of an Englishman in a baseball cap, and we'll die in the class we were born.' the libertines, time for heroes.

'Down where it's wetter, life's so much better, under the sea' Disney, under the sea

'We got married in a fever, hotter'un a pepper sprout' Johnny cash and June carter Jackson.

Lovely Smile
