Some have been calling it the Mumsnet election, so we want to know what you think - whether you'll bother to go and vote at all, and which political leader ticks your box.

This survey is open to every Mumsnetter in the UK. We will be repeating this survey regularly between now and the election, so please look out for it again. We'll be asking about topical issues in future surveys, too.

Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win £100 in Boden or Amazon vouchers.

Thanks and good luck!

LoveBeingAMummy · 05/02/2010 09:58

Done, and will happily tell anyone who wants to know what i ticked for £100 of vocuhers

manfrom · 05/02/2010 10:41

A poll, fab, I love them! Almost as much as I love pointless lists.

Anyway, you need to ask some more questions. Like: how did you vote last time, how likely do you think you are to vote, If you absolutely had to vote, who would you vote for, would you consider tactical voting etc etc.

Did you know, for example, that lots of people say they're going to vote Labour/Lib Dem and then vote Tory when they get to the booth? It's because they're embarassed about saying that they're tories apparently (understandable).

For anyone interested in the art of polling - and believe me, it's an art rather than a science - check out this website :

OK, am thinking IF you are an overseas MNer and you DEFINITELY have voting rights in the UK - you can take part - for the 'region' part please put down the area you were last resident in.
If you are just overseas and have no voting rights to a UK election then sorry I don't think you can - we are trying to get a feel for voting trends/ opinions of folks who will be eligible to vote in the UK general election.

Hope this is clear....

Hmpf. For some strange reason I am not allowed to vote.

Can I get Justa to vote for me?

mrsbaldwin · 05/02/2010 14:37

I agree with manfrom. And whoever mentioned tactical voting. A few more questions would be good - maybe that could be the next poll.

BTW MNHQ if you didn't think of this already what about getting an MN person onto the Election Night Specials to do a slot - they've got hours to fill. And maybe someone in Worcester for the live OB from their count as well, if anyone willing lives there (".. it's been said that this election will be won by Worcester Woman. I have here with me MrsBlahBlah, a contributor to popular website Mumsnet, widely thought to be Worcester Woman's spiritual home. MrsBlahBlah, who will win here tonight etc...'>

The best thing for Mumsnet publicity machine would be for a sizeable number of participants to declare they've yet to decide. And for the two main parties to be neck and neck and the Lib Dems trailing but not by much.

I feel v uncomfortable about this as it potentially interferes with democracy.

Swedey · 05/02/2010 15:49

mrsbaldwin - but one mumsnetter isn't representative of all mumsnetters.

Why not sent my sons' school PTA chairwoman to talk on behalf of all parents at secondary school?

RustyBear · 05/02/2010 15:53

Done

mrsbaldwin · 05/02/2010 16:04

Swedey - I was just idly thinking about all that nice empty telly space waiting to be filled, really - nice for MN to go and fill some of it, if they wanted. And the PTA chair as well.

justa forriners aren't allowed to vote but expats are well, temporary expats who've been sent places, not sure how it works for other people. Resident forriners can't vote in general elections but can in local and I think European elections.

Sometimes....depends how many passports you have stashed away!

Some of us are just forrin everywhere no matter what nationality we technically have.

Amapoleon · 05/02/2010 20:33

I live in Spain, I have the right to vote in Local and European elections but not national elections. I can vote in national elections in the UK. So please Mumsnet can I vote on here so I can win the vouchers?

MmeLindt · 05/02/2010 21:42

I have UK passport but never voted in UK before emigrating to Germany. Never intended to stay in mainland Europe for the next 18 years of my life (Bloody DH's fault).

Apparently the fact that I was never registered to vote means that I cannot vote now. Hmpf.

I guess I am an expat forriner

cariboo · 05/02/2010 22:41

rofl! read Boden & thought of you, Mme Lindt. And there you were! surprise, surprise!

the problem with polls (general polls) is that they don't take into account the seat you're voting in.

For example, a Labour vote in my constituency would count for nothing (for labour) as it's a Lib Dem seat with a potential Tory challenger (though can't see the Tory taking the seat away tbh) but put down that you vote Labour in a poll and the vote would count towards Labour's total.

(I suppose this is why some of the polls poll marginal seats now to get an indication of how the wind is blowing)

this report v interesting if you like looking at the swing between parties
