Some have been calling it the Mumsnet election, so we want to know what you think - whether you'll bother to go and vote at all, and which political leader ticks your box.

This survey is open to every Mumsnetter in the UK. We will be repeating this survey regularly between now and the election, so please look out for it again. We'll be asking about topical issues in future surveys, too.

Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win £100 in Boden or Amazon vouchers.

Thanks and good luck!

Hello again.

The username/email collection is just so we have your details to put into the prize draw (and contact you if you win).

We have absolutely no intention of linking your username to your declared voting intentions IN ANY WAY.

Not ignoring you, Wereworm.

But have to be sure of the facts before posting an answer to your Qs. Please bear with us for a bit...

JustineMumsnet · 04/02/2010 16:46

Hello - yes sorry we should have said who it was for (my fault). Actually it's for our soon to be created politics page (pull your finger out Gerry!) We thought we'd do a poll and then follow up with regular ones perhaps around specific issues that crop in the election so we can track how/whether particular issues are making any difference to mumsnetters and then publish it on the site in the form of a nice graph with arrows and stuff...

It's because we think it will (or might be) be interesting to see the results - for Mumsnetters and non-Mumsnetters. We've had this discussion about publicity what seems like a million times now Thready and I know you don't like the usual response but I'm afraid that's what I'm going to give you - we want to spread the Mumsnet word. We think Mumsnet is a great resource and we want people to know about it. We know that it's not what you want from or of Mumsnet and we don't like to be a disappointment but we have always been upfront about the fact that we're not publicity shy because we want newbies (we think it makes for a better board) and we want to more people to know about us.

JustineMumsnet · 04/02/2010 18:09

We did a census last spring 2009 - when we asked which political party you felt most aligned to - is that what you mean?

JustineMumsnet · 04/02/2010 18:10

good point frankinaround - I can't see why not but will check with Ann, our survey bod.

OK, am thinking IF you are an overseas MNer and you DEFINITELY have voting rights in the UK - you can take part - for the 'region' part please put down the area you were last resident in.
If you are just overseas and have no voting rights to a UK election then sorry I don't think you can - we are trying to get a feel for voting trends/ opinions of folks who will be eligible to vote in the UK general election.

Hope this is clear....

ActiveThread we'll only be counting the votes of members - this is why we ask for your nickname and email in question 1 - and we will restrict all future polls to those mnetters who were registered by Feb 1 2010. (We're not completely inept ).

Of course it's not completely fair and representative of either the country or MN for that matter but we think it'll be interesting nonetheless to track changes.

And to those who asked for more interesting questions - agreed we'll be jazzing them up a bit. This is just the first boring benchmark one. Cheers for the input.

JustineMumsnet · 06/02/2010 22:00

I don't think it's awful that the Government are holding a meeting at the Dept of Health next week, led by the Chief Nurse and Andy Burnham to discuss the adoption of Mumsnet's miscarriage code of practice which will be attended by ourselves and all the key stakeholders, if that's what you mean by political influence, Swedey.

And as for 3 Tories on MN - well we'll see. As said, I think it's an interesting poll.

JustineMumsnet · 07/02/2010 10:18

Really can't see what party politics has to do with it at all. We have never aligned ourselves to any political party, nor would we. It's the general election, which happens every four/five years and is quite important to folks on here, so we're planning a poll of Mnetters which we're going to update when some big issue occurs to see if it changes Mnetters voting intentions because we think it may be of interest.

Anguis you might as well ask why do we do travel content, or have a book club - the answer we are doing webchats/ polls etc because we think it's of interest to Mumsnetters at election time.

Swedes you seem worried that we at HQ in some way biased in the way we're doing things. I'm not sure why you think this? All I can say is we are making every effort to be entirely neutral from an HQ point of view - we allow everyone equal access and provide the same offer of hand-holding/advice before and during webchats. Not sure where you're based but maybe you should get involved a bit - come scrutinise things to set your mind at rest?

JustineMumsnet · 07/02/2010 22:33

Yes it's still open - we'll probably leave it up for another few days.

JustineMumsnet · 08/02/2010 11:17

"A prize draw suggests that the giving of info is not of intrinsic relevance to the giver so needs to be compensated? (I don't think that 'vote for your favourite book' has prize draw?) So made it feel a bit like the advertising surveys."

But we incentivise Mumsnetters whenever we can to do stuff and have done for the last 10 years, as we're conscious of always asking! We have always entered folk into prize draws pretty much every week for submitting reviews, local info, tips etc.

All of which - think you'll agree - is of intrinsic value to Mumsnetters so just don't buy your distinction - but there you go. We'll just have to agree to disagree .

Ahem Netmums got half a million quid for health visitors from govn and promotion of the service and they're not a Not for Profit organisation. They are owned by the 4 founders.
