This is the feedback thread for the 120 Mumsnet users with at least one child aged 3 months and 5 years who have been testing Milton’s new antibacterial hand sanitiser. Testers were asked to try the hand sanitiser with their whole family as and when needed over the course of two weeks. The sanitiser is suitable for the whole family from 3 months old and is made from 100% plant based, natural ingredients, is alcohol-free and dermatologically tested.

Here’s what Milton has to say: “We care for babies' fragile skin as well as protecting little ones and their family from germs. This is why we have developed the first Antibacterial Hand Sanitiser that is fully suitable for little ones skin from 3 months old. Our alcohol free foam kills 99.9% of germs in a matter of seconds and our plant based formula is better for the environment, you and your baby. Ideal for on the go use, our rinse-free formula is perfect for hand hygiene with no need for water or soap.”

  1. What were your overall thoughts on Milton’s antibacterial hand sanitiser?

It was so easy to use and was so brilliant I could use it on my little one too without worrying! The only thing we didn’t like was the smell, it doesn’t last long but it isn’t nice.

  1. What did you like most about the sanitiser? Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance?

I loved it was safe for my whole family. The no alcohol was a big part of that.

  1. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?

Yes, it was easy to keep in the changing bag and out on the side at home. The bottle size I test was small enough to be convenient but big enough to be worth buying.

  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?

I liked it. I don’t think I have a preference really but the foam did seem to dry quicker which was great for my little one.

  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?

Yes definitely.

  1. What were your overall thoughts on Milton’s antibacterial hand sanitiser?

I really like the concept of this product being plant based and not containing alcohol. It's similar to other products but has a slight twist with these factors. I think its a pretty good gentle, effective product.

  1. What did you like most about the sanitiser? Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance?

I love the fact it has no alcohol in and is plant based. It's very gentle on my sons skin. I'm a bit wary of using alcohol based products on him at such a young age, especially with him always putting his hands in his mouth. I like the citrus scent too, just not the after smell. I really like the feel on the foaming texture too.

  1. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?

It was so unbelievably easy to use! One pump rub in, wait a couple of seconds (because it's a bit sticky), done!

  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?

I absolutely love this concept! I find alot of gels are far to thin and runny. They make such a mess, but this product sits in the palm of your hands. Excellent for q mom om the go who is doing many things at once.

  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?

I would definitely recommend this product. It's gentle and kind on the skin, super easy to use and effective. I feel so much more confident in my child's safety within thw pandemic using this.

  2. Both me and my child's hands did not feel dry after using. I liked that it has no alcohol or fragrance. I'm indifferent to the plant based comment
  3. Yes
  4. It took longer to "soak" in than standard hand gel (you buy from a shop not the watery ones) but it's a bit of practice for my little one who is not quite washing her hands yet
  5. Yes definitely especially as it's suitable for babies 3 months+ as I have been nervous about using hand gel on my baby so far
Nooproblemoo · 28/06/2021 16:10

  2. Liked that it was alcohol free so it wasn't drying
  3. Perfect size for popping in various bags as we were out and about
  4. Didn't feel slimey like gel can. The foam fascinated my little boy so he happily smushed it and rubbed his hands
  5. Yes I'd recommend it to others, not an offensive smell, really easy to apply and rub in. Handy size so great for bags on the go
Catawaul · 28/06/2021 17:31
  1. What were your overall thoughts on Milton’s antibacterial hand sanitiser?
I like it! The foam really suited us. It seems a lot safer for children.
  1. What did you like most about the sanitiser? Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance?
The foam texture, and the no fragrance was great. It felt safe to be used before eating, and both my children suck their thumbs so unfortunately consume quite a lot of hand sanitiser.
  1. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?
Yes, very easy. It dispenses just the right amount.
  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?
I loved it. I don't much like the texture of gel (sensory issues) and it often slides off my children's hands before they rub it in. The foam got past these problems!
  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?
Yes, definitely.
SpunBodgeSquarepants · 28/06/2021 17:48
  1. What were your overall thoughts on Milton’s antibacterial hand sanitiser?
Very good - not slimy like some other brands and dried quickly.
  1. What did you like most about the sanitiser? Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance?
I loved the fact it has no harsh chemicals and no alcohol, so kinder to small hands. However I do feel it would benefit from some fragrance, it has quite an unpleasant smell.
  1. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?
Very easy yes.
  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?
My 7 year old definitely preferred the foam, I think it's a novelty for him!
  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?
Yes I would

  1. What were your overall thoughts on Milton’s antibacterial hand sanitiser?
The foam is really nice but I worry about the plastic packaging for an 'eco friendly' brand
  1. What did you like most about the sanitiser? Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance?
I really like the fact it is plant based and the foam works well
  1. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?
yes very easy
  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?
I liked it as less messy and reduces wastage
  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?
yes I might, although more likely to if the packaging was more eco friendly
Pipperleen · 28/06/2021 19:21

  2. What did you like most about the sanitiser? Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance? The foam - easy to rub in. Baby was still happy to eat with hands straight after application.
  3. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about? Definitely, very straight forward.
  4. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel? Excellent - perfect for when you need it to sink in quickly.

GentleBen · 28/06/2021 19:28
  1. What were your overall thoughts on Milton’s antibacterial hand sanitiser?

I liked it! It's a brand I trust and have used before and I was keen to try a foam pump.

  1. What did you like most about the sanitiser? Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance?

The fact that it was alcohol free was a very big positive as it didn't dry my scaly old lady hands out. Best of all was the fact it was a pump and each 'dose' of anti bac came out pre measured so we never had too much to rub in.

  1. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?

It was really easy to use because it was so quick to pump and it was easy to pop in a handbag or pushchair. The lid on mine split after I invariably dropped it - the perils of never having enough hands - and it was then useless as it didn't click on again.

  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?

Great! No spillages, never too little or too much and I could encourage my son to keep rubbing until he could no longer see the foam.

  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?

Yes. I really liked it and prefer it to any other gel I've used.

MySafeSpace · 28/06/2021 19:38
  1. What were your overall thoughts on Milton’s antibacterial hand sanitiser?

Really didn’t like the smell at all but loved that it was a foam. So easy to use and spill proof.

  1. What did you like most about the sanitiser? Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance?

Loved that it was a foam. So easy to use. The no alcohol part was brilliant for my son who has super sensitive skin

  1. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?

Yes very easy to use, kept in changing bag for ease of both at home and out of the home.

  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?

So much easier to use. Didn’t leave our hands sticky like most gels do and no excess product covering you either.

  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?

Yes I probably would but only if on sale. It’s def got a lot of positives but there are other foam products out there (not with no alcohol)

Sqinky · 28/06/2021 19:49
  1. What were your overall thoughts on Milton’s antibacterial hand sanitiser?

Hmm so conflicted, it has its pros and cons.

  1. What did you like most about the sanitiser?Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance?

It does have a funky smell (so it isn't fragrance free), love that it's plant based (yey for planet earth!) The formula is lovely and gentle on baby hands and my hands too, not drying out and doesnt sting at All. Wish it had the Milton smell.

  1. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?
Perfect pump action. So much better being foam in a bottle. Squeezy bottles and kids don't mix.
  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?

Prefer the foam especially being in a pump, as most gel sanitisers are squeezy and you end up using too much or too little.

  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?

I would simply for the fact that kids over 3 months can use it. It's gentle. But I wish it would smell better.

Stargirl84 · 28/06/2021 20:11

1. What were your overall thoughts on Milton’s antibacterial hand sanitiser?
I really liked the foam, it felt less sticky than other hand gels I’ve used and smelt nicer,
2. What did you like most about the sanitiser? Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance?
Yes they were definitely plus points. I also really liked the fact that it had a cap so the pump didn’t get dirty in my bag.
3. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?
Yes, very straightforward.
4. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?
I like that, for the reasons stated above. My children liked it because it was a bit different to the usual hand gel.
5. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?
Yes, I would, although I think it’s a bit pricey. It’s a better texture than other gels.

HumbugWhale · 28/06/2021 21:03
  1. I didn't have any strong feelings overall, it was ok.
  2. I like the fact it is alcohol free but I wasn't keen on the smell.
  3. Yes very easy to use and a handy size for taking out in a bag.
  4. I prefer the feel of a gel. The kids loved the foam though, they found it fun to use. I think the pump action dispenser is hard to recycle though.
  5. I wouldn't specifically recommend it unless someone particularly wanted an alcohol free sanitizer. I wouldn't make negative comments about it either though, it did the job!
Mousetown · 29/06/2021 04:25

I liked that it didn’t have alcohol.

  1. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?

Yes. I hate when with normal alcohol based gel sanitisers you would end up with loads of excess product and nowhere to wipe it off.

  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?

Love it for the reason above

  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?

Yes, definitely. I felt confident using it on my child.

ItsGotToBePizza · 29/06/2021 10:09

  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?
It seems better to me.
  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?
Probably not purely because at £2.99 a bottle it is a lot more expensive. If the price was more comparable I would.

  1. It's a very handbag friendly size, was non-sticky and dried quickly. I wasn't a fan of the smell though.

  1. What were your overall thoughts on Milton’s antibacterial hand sanitiser?

Overall found it good to use, my Daughter has very sensitive skin where most products cause redness and a rash and this didn't happen when using Milton's.

  1. What did you like most about the sanitiser? Did you like the fact that it is plant based, has no alcohol and no fragrance?

That is was less harsh on the skin but still provided good antibacterial protection.

  1. Was the sanitiser easy to use both in the home and when out and about?

Very easy to use, bottle very portable, was kept in babies bag for when out and about.

  1. How do you feel about the hand sanitiser being a foam based product rather than a gel?

I feel was preferable, seemed to absorb better into the skin without leaving residue sticky feeling.

  1. Would you recommend Milton antibacterial hand sanitiser to other parents of young children?

I would recommend Milton's. The only thing I would look to improve on would be the smell, it has a slightly unusual smell.
