We are looking for Mumsnetters in the UK with at least one child aged 2-12 to read with their children and be part of Egmont’s Reading Club.

If you have more than one child you’d like to take part, please sign up individually for them by completing the survey more than once, using the same personal details for yourself. You will need to complete individual feedback for each child as a part of the reading club.

Egmont will be sending you and your child at least 2 books weekly and occasionally magazines for a period of 6 weeks, asking you to read together and share your experiences. You’d also get a copy of Help Your Child Love Reading by Alison David.

Here’s what Egmont has to say: “Coronavirus has turned the world upside down and we are all dealing with a new ‘normal’ – the children are home from school and we have to find ways to keep them occupied, happy and to keep the learning going. There is one simple thing that can help in so many ways, and that’s reading aloud to them. We’d like you to read to your child every day, more than once a day if you’d like! That’s why we are starting the Egmont Reading Club on Mumsnet.

We at Egmont know the enormous benefits of reading aloud to children including supporting their learning and a better sense of wellbeing. It's deeply comforting to be read to and in these times of uncertainty we're keen to help families enjoy special time together.”

Selected testers will be asked to complete the following tasks:

  1. Indicate which books (from a list) that you’d like to receive each week for 6 weeks
  2. Read with your children daily or more often.
  3. Fill in a reading diary (which we will be sending to you weekly).
  4. Leave your feedback for each week of reading throughout the 6 weeks on a public thread on Mumsnet.

All selected participants in Egmont’s Reading Club who leave the required feedback on the public feedback thread and in all 6 weekly diaries will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

If you’re interested in taking part, click here to sign up.

Thanks and good luck!

@outnumbered77 - how are you finding the clockwork sparrow books? I really liked the look of them, but I have a habit of choosing books for my ds that I am keener on than he is - hence the slightly hideous selection above that he chose himself! 😂

MrsAlwaysRight · 01/05/2020 18:00

My youngest is enjoying the Donut Diner book. My eldest read the Clockwork Sparrow one this week which she thought was really good.

outnumbered77 · 01/05/2020 20:39

@leeloo1 The books are more my choice too so far as my son is a really reluctant reader. We're both enjoying the clockwork sparrow though. He did enjoy the last kids on earth too (I hated it though!) but then discovered the series on Netflix.

leeloo1 · 01/05/2020 21:08

@outnumbered77 and @MrsAlwaysRight - thanks, 2 recommendations for the clockwork sparrow! I'll definitely add it to the list for next week then. 🙂

Hello everyone.

I received the 3rd lot of books for my DC on Friday. They are gorgeous books but none were the choices my two made. I'm wondering if anyone else received books not on their choice list? I made sure the choices were submitted in plenty of time. Perhaps we received someone else's choice by mistake?

Still very grateful though!

Osquito · 02/05/2020 11:16

@Healthquestion101
We got set 3 today as well: both were ones from our very first list.

munchbunch12 · 02/05/2020 13:23

@Healthquestion101 one of the books in our second set was a substitution, but it was about the same set of characters, so DC didn't mind too much.

outnumbered77 · 02/05/2020 17:20

I was late filling out the end of week survey and now don't have any new diary links 🙁

leeloo1 · 03/05/2020 16:06

@outnumbered77 - have you emailed mumsnet (by replying to the first survey)? I've found them to reply quickly and be helpful. Fingers crossed if you've been struck out of the trial they can get you back in. I got the new links on Friday if that's any help?

Rae1000 · 03/05/2020 20:45

My daughter can't wait for us to start her new book tomorrow...she is still deciding which one to start with...dramas or secrets of a teenage heiress!

outnumbered77 · 04/05/2020 12:17

All sorted now, thanks Mumsnet!

Maisiesaves · 07/05/2020 00:54

The best part of this experience so far has been the utter excitement on my son's face when he sees the delivery of shiny new books! This from a boy who couldn't care less when we go to the library for new books to read!! Bless. I am kicking myself for missing out the book selection for next week so we'll not have that experience next week, but we are both thrilled with the books we have - particularly the Mr Men stories! :)

MrsAlwaysRight · 07/05/2020 10:50

Has anyone had a delivery this week?

YoureMyWifeNowDave · 07/05/2020 11:12

@MrsAlwaysRight we had a milkshake magazine this morning but no books as yet this week

munchbunch12 · 07/05/2020 13:04

No books yet, but we had 2 magazines today, one for each DC Grin

Scoleah · 07/05/2020 14:03

Milkshake magazine here too!

Malmontar · 08/05/2020 09:08

We normally get the Macmillan delivery email on Thursday and DPD on Friday but we've had nothing this week. Wondering if it's because of bank holiday? Ah how old are you DCs getting the magazines? We've never got one and wondering if it's because DD is a bit older.

Scoleah · 08/05/2020 10:12

@malmontar we normally have notification from DPD on a Thursday too; but didn't have one, I'm guessing it's because of the bank holiday.
Only my 3yo gets the magazine, my 11yo doesn't get any, so assuming it's because of age!

Malmontar · 08/05/2020 10:24

@Scoleah thanks for replying, good to know I'm not the only one. It must be age as DD is also 11.

Readaloud · 08/05/2020 12:35

I came to ask about exactly the same thing, @Malmontar. I have normally heard from MaMillan by now, but nothing this week. Maybe they will come on Monday because of the Bank Hol. It's reassuring that I'm not the only one, I was worried that my diary entries hadn't saved properly and I was on the 'naughty list'!

Osquito · 08/05/2020 13:24

@Malmontar DS was 5 (6 on Weds) and he hasn’t had any magazine (not complaining, weren’t expecting any!) and I usually got the books on a Monday/Tuesday, del email on Friday 🤷‍♀️

munchbunch12 · 08/05/2020 14:26

@Malmontar my youngest is 5 and has had 3 magazines now, the oldest is 12 and has received one. We haven't had the usual Macmillan email and DPD delivery, or the email with the diary links and book choice lists either. Like others, I'm assuming it's due to the Bank Holiday.

Malmontar · 08/05/2020 14:36

Ah that's interesting. We applied for 2 kids but only one of them got it. It's a shame but he chooses one and DD chooses the other.

pinkspideruk · 08/05/2020 21:45

just came on to see if anyone else was hadnt had an email with the diary links for this week (normally start on Friday) or the delivery email.

Assumed it was because of the bank holiday and reassured to see others are waiting too :)

Also we havent had any magazines but werent expecting them H is 6 and D is 10

leeloo1 · 08/05/2020 22:18

I haven't had an email yet with the links to review for today. I also usually get the macmillan email on Thursday and receive the books on Friday, but haven't had that this week.

They're all free, so I'm not complaining (other than at the waste), but I think it would have made more sense with the magazines if we were given a list and asked to tick which our kids might enjoy. Dd would have loved the Disney Princess one, but we didn't get sent that. She did receive a LOL one (which scared her, as they're so odd looking) and a my little pony one, which she wasn't that bothered about (apart from the free gift, 😂). Ds was sent a Fortnite magazine, but he doesn't play it and didn't even want to open it. It's a shame, as they always love the look of so many comics in the store, but I don't buy them as they're so expensive. When school reopens we'll pass them on to someone, but it's a shame the comics aren't being tailored as the books are being.
