This is the feedback thread for the MNers who tested out the new Flora Original recipe with their family. This product test was open to all UK MNers with at least one child aged 0-12.

Here’s what Flora has to say: “Try our Flora Original’s great new taste with 100% plant goodness*. Flora Original spread has been a family favourite for generations. Melt on toast, spread on sandwiches, mix into meals, Flora Original’s new recipe is made from 100% of ingredients from natural origins. Naturally rich in Omega 3, with 67% less saturated fat than butter, Flora has absolutely no preservatives, artificial colours or flavours. Our product is certified vegan, however we don’t recommend if you have a dairy allergy.”

Probably not over butter brands generally but I might buy it if my usual spreadable butters were not on offer. I don't like paying full price for them so this could be a good fallback.

Yes. It was a perfectly good spread.

Overall, we were quite happy with the new Flora Original. It ticked all the boxes for what we needed it for.

• What did you like or dislike about new Flora Original? What did your family like or dislike? We liked that it was great for baking our cakes and tasted great in mashed potato. There wasn’t really anything we disliked.
• Did you like the taste of New Flora Original? How did your family like the taste of New Flora Original? Yes. Although, sadly, we (husband and I) preferred another brand on our toast. However, our 2 year old loved Flora.
• Would you choose New Flora Original for you or your family over other margarine and/or butter brands? Please explain why or why not. I would definitely choose it for our little one (particularly as it’s healthier than the one we currently use!) but my husband and I prefer another brand more (we still really liked Flora though)
• Would you recommend Flora Original to friends or family? Please explain why or why not. Yes as it was a hit with our 2 year old and works well with baking.

Yes it's a nice spread and at current price comparable with similar products however I think its currently an introductory price and wonder if at full price it may not be some comparatively priced.

I think I would as long as the price was reasonable.

I would yes. It’s a nice spread, tastes good and was a huge hit with everyone in our family.

First of all thank you for letting our family test out Flora. It really has opened my eyes to returning to a healthy spread as opposed to butter.

We were extremely satisfied with this Flora spread it had a lovely non greasy buttery slightly salted taste. It was easy to spread and is a healthier alternative than our usual butter.

It most definitely is. I especially applaud the responsibility they have chosen to take on with regards to the environment. (Referring to their use of palm oil and recyclable packaging). It has our children's futures amongst its priorities, how can you not trust a brand who cares about our world and it's future!

Indeed, it is healthier for us as a family and better for the environment

That It is healthier for my family having no artificial colours preservatives, rich in omega 3 and no trans fats. I also respect the fact that Flora are holding themselves responsible, to the impact of their brand and product on the environment. Ensuring the palm oil in Flora does not have any environmental impact. I checked the packaging too and it claimed to be fully recyclable [5 star] to Flora

Taste, a lovely smooth non greasy slightly salted

It had all the taste of butter, and we knew it was healthier

Yes I have actively made the switch from butter. As stated it has all the taste of my usual butter, however it is so much more healthier. It is also acting responsible towards the environment.

• Would you recommend Flora Original to friends or family?

Yes for all the reasons stated. It is tasty, healthier, comparable in price to other brands. It also is behaving responsible towards the future of our world. What is there not to like, and why on earth would I not reccomend!

We definitely would as it is cruelty free and tastes great! We have already swapped to it.

Absolutely. As soon as we found out about the male calves being shot at birth so we can drink their milk we stopped consuming dairy. (Best decision ever- feel so much better).

So great that Flora has gone plant based and tastes so good, I honestly don't think anyone would think it was dairy free if they didn't know. Excellent job Flora!

I liked how easily it spread from the fridge. I wasn't keen on the taste though. However, it worked well in baking.

I didn't like the taste on toast or in a sandwich, it tasted like margarine from my childhood, or from a cheap cafe. It also wasn't nice on new potatoes.

No. Not only is it more expensive than my normal brand (Clover) it isn't as tasty. However, would consider using it in baking with children.

If they wanted a plant-based product specifically, yes. Otherwise, it really was far too 80s-tasting for my liking.

Very! The whole family liked it.

Yes, I haven't heard anything negative about them recently in the news.

Yes, we replaced our normal butter with the Flora and used it as we normally would, no problems.

We all thought it tasted like normal butter, so there wasn't really any complaints.

I can definitely say that there was no dislike from any of the family. I can't say it tasted better than our usual butter but there is nothing unpleasant or off with Flora (and I have some fussy eaters).

I would definitely buy it again along with our usual butter for the healthier option.

Yes I would and I already have. It is better for our overall health and it tastes nice so it's no brainer really.

Yes. It has been around for years and we buy other products (oil) so know that it is a good brand.

Not in the case of this product. It is just about OK on sandwiches but we are enthusiastic about butter - know that too is all natural ingredients and use it sparingly. No vegetable spread, however good, is going to please a butter lover.

The packaging is great and the taste is good. But it just isn't butter.

Yes - although "new" and "original" my son pointed out are in direct opposition to each other. Is it new? It it the original recipe? Which?

My vegan friend loves it and I recommended it to her (and gave her the rest of our tub). I would certainly suggest it to anyone who does not prefer butter. Sadly, we tried to change.....

Please explain why or why not: Yes we have now switched to this brand, as it's got the buttery taste without the buttery fats, we all enjoyed it and as its healthier its a definite postive to switch too.
• Would you recommend Flora Original to friends or family? Please explain why or why not: Yes as previously stated we all enjoyed the buttery taste with the healthy benefits. I have already recommended it to my dad who is a lurpack man and needs to cut down on his fats.

We all liked spreadability, there is nothing new about the tub really though but the taste is good. I always think a different shapped tub might help how easily you get the product out however...

The taste was fine, we all generally liked it. My daughter still prefers salted butter however.

Definitely, I’ve tasted a lot of the other brands always come back to Flora as it’s very soft, easy to spread, and very good for baking

I liked the ease of spreading on to toast straight out of the fridge (a must in a busy house before school!). The kids liked the taste on their toast. I also liked the taste, on my toast but also in some cake that I baked. It baked well so I wouldn’t hesitate to use it for cakes when I purchase it in the future. I liked the packaging, it stood out in the supermarket and didn’t blend in with the other butters in their fridges. There was nothing which we disliked!

We all liked the taste of new Flora and would definitely purchase it again.

We used to use Flora Buttery as I wasn’t sure if the family would like Flora Original. Sometimes I paid extra for the Buttery. I now know that our family loved the taste of the Original, and I would definitely opt to purchase Flora over any other brand.

I have already recommended the new Flora Original to my mum as she complains she doesn’t find butter she likes, and she loves it! I will continue to recommend Flora Original where possible in conversations and reviews!

Quite satisfied, my family liked it and it tasted as I'd expect flora to taste.

The taste was very pleasant, much more so than I was expecting as I have been loyal to the same butter brand for many years and haven’t tried margarine for a very long time.

Yes, on one hand because I’m now more aware of it from this test and because we all liked it but also I’d pick it off the shelf for the omega 3 aspect as I can’t eat fish.

Yes, very different to what I remember margarine being and I’d encourage others to try it.

My boys love butter, I had hoped this would be a healthier alternative to their usual full fat butter addiction but they weren't keen on the flavour on toast/pancakes but hidden in a sandwich or on veg they didn't notice

Very easy to spread and use in cooking, the colour was quite light so I wasn't sure what to expect. I dont dislike the taste but it's not as tasty as expected.

It was great as it was spreadable straight from the fridge, it was also really handy when we had vegan family members over during the weekend, we didn't need to have two spreads out

Yes the flavour was nice, tasted quite buttery for a dairy free spread, and definitely better than the old flora recipe.

I would, I change brands quite often and float between margarine and butter depending upon what is on offer in the supermarket etc. I will be adding this to the rotation
