This is the feedback thread for the MNers who tested out the new Flora Original recipe with their family. This product test was open to all UK MNers with at least one child aged 0-12.

Here’s what Flora has to say: “Try our Flora Original’s great new taste with 100% plant goodness*. Flora Original spread has been a family favourite for generations. Melt on toast, spread on sandwiches, mix into meals, Flora Original’s new recipe is made from 100% of ingredients from natural origins. Naturally rich in Omega 3, with 67% less saturated fat than butter, Flora has absolutely no preservatives, artificial colours or flavours. Our product is certified vegan, however we don’t recommend if you have a dairy allergy.”

Yes, we used it for sandwiches, toast and fairy cakes and it worked well for all.

I like that it has no preservatives or artificial colours. It is rich in omega 3, which is a bonus as DC don't eat much fish! DH thought it seemed quite greasy in comparison to other brands, but the rest of us didn't notice this.

We are not brand loyal when it comes to margarine, and tend to to buy whichever one is on offer for a pound. But if that included New Flora Original then yes, I would choose it over others as I now have a better knowledge of it.

Yes, I would be happy to recommend it as a healthier alternative.

Yes, definitely. As its healthy plant based product and tastes good.

I was very satisfied with the new Flora original. Lovely buttery taste, spreads well and is plant based. We use on bread, crackers, rice and is also delicious as a crumble.

Yes definitely. I always head for Flora in the supermarket and one of my children refuses to eat any other spread! He can detect another brand a mile off!

I love the buttery taste and the fact that it spreads well straight from the fridge. There is nothing to dislike to be honest.

We love the taste. You can really tell the difference between this and other brands. Buttery and smooth.

since starting on the new Flora original, I do not buy anything else. I also like that it is made from 100% natural ingredients.

We likes the taste and we liked that you could spread it well onto bread straight from the fridge. There was nothing we disliked about it.

-I was surprised and very satisfied with the new Flora.

• Flora is a classic brand, but I'm unsure whether I'd say I can 'trust' any brand really.
• I suppose you could say it is a brand which caters to all my family needs.
• I like the fact that the new recipe is now 100% made from natural origins. The packaging seems more modern and eye-catching too. My family enjoyed trying something new, though tbh barely noticed a difference!
• Both my family and me usually use Clover or Flora buttery and, while the new Flora was quite pleasant, taste-wise it didn't really compare. However, as a lower fat alternative, it was decent and totally acceptable.
• I think New Flora Original compares fairly favourably to other brands of spread, though, having said that, we weren't bowled over sufficiently by the taste to make us select it over cheaper, supermarket own branded alternatives.
• I'm not necessarily one to recommend products unless they are outstanding in some way and extremely good value. At full price I wouldn't recommend it, but if it was on offer I might, but not above any cheaper alternative that had similar ingredients.

• Did you like the taste of New Flora Original? It was ok quite creamy but still like margarine and I prefer butter! How did your family like the taste of New Flora Original? Husband not keen but kids liked it

Very satisfied. It replaced our normal brand very nicely.

It had a good colour, was easy to spread and tasted good. Nothing really to dislike.

I would if on offer. I tend to buy the cheapest on Ocado, which is nearly always one particular brand. We are very price aware.

I would because it has a great taste and is vegan too.

Very, we normally only use real butter and this went down surprisingly well with everyone.

I have used many flora products before and it's definitely a brand I trust and caters for all my family's needs.
It was very easy to spread and tasted great(even my dd who normally hates butter/margarine in her sandwiches tried and liked it)The packaging was good and stood out.
I will definitely be buying again and would recommend to friends and family.

We liked the taste although thought it was better in sandwiches rather than just on its own in taste. DH thought it was 'margariney' (as above) but I'm not convinced that he would notice it if he had UK own it was different to usual.
It didn't spread particularly well straight from the fridge.

I haven't bought Flora for some time and previously found it to be quite greasy. This one wasn't.

Probably not. We agreed that we still prefer the olive-based spreads.

We were very happy, loved the product as much as our regular brand of spread.
Is Flora a brand you can trust? Definitely, it has a well established reputation which is deserved
Does it cater for all needs? We mainly used it on toast/ scones etc and it did very well, wasn’t intrusive taste
What did you like? We liked it being vegan, certainly feels healthier option than some other butters and spreads. We didn’t dislike anything
Did you like the taste? I tend to prefer a more buttery taste but the children prefer a plainer spread so this suited them more
Would you choose it over other margarine ? I would have this along side a butter- I’d be happy to swap my regular margarine brand though as long as the price was equivalent

Overall, how satisfied were you and your family with new Flora Original? Very, everyone has happily tucked in loved the taste. The fact that it is 100% plant based was a big +.

• Is Flora a brand you can trust? No reason not too. Has stuck the test of time.

• Is Flora a brand that caters to all your family’s needs? Yes. We are trying to move away from dairy so this is an easy switch.

• What did you like or dislike about new Flora Original? What did your family like or dislike? Taste was good and better than our usual brand. Loved that it's 100% plant based and the green credentials re: packaging. Easy to spread and great on toast. My only criticism is that it uses Palm oil.

• Did you like the taste of New Flora Original? How did your family like the taste of New Flora Original? Yes, prefer this to our usual brand. Everyone in the family seemed to enjoy it.

• Would you choose New Flora Original for you or your family over other margarine and/or butter brands? Please explain why or why not. Yes, even more if the Palm oil was replaced in the ingredients.

• Would you recommend Flora Original to friends or family? Please explain why or why not. Yes. For all the reasons above.

I was really impressed, I normally buy spreadable butter and wasn't expecting to like it but the taste was much better than I expected and my children liked it.

Yes, my mum has always said it makes great scones too.

Everyone was happy with it in sandwiches for school and work and my dd actually much preferred it to butter. I also used it instead of butter in the bread maker and it worked fine and I couldn't tell the difference.

I like that it's plant based without much compromise on taste. I still think butter tastes slightly nicer.

My daughter preferred the taste to our normal butter and my son liked it but not as much as butter. It comes a close second to butter for me.

I probably would buy it for sandwiches and baking but would still have butter in the fridge to have on baked potatoes.

Yes, the taste was good and I did like how spreadable it was straight out of the fridge.

Overall we are satisfied with new Flora Original

Flora is a brand that I grew up with but then the fashion for olive spreads and spreadable butter seemed to take over. It felt quite nostalgic going back to Flora.

Flora caters to the needs where we currently use spread. We use it in sandwiches, on crackers or toast and in some of our cooking e.g. topping vegetables or in mashed potatoes. I still prefer to use butter in baking.

My family like how easy it is to spread. My daughter likes the packaging with the bright sunflower. The pack sizes were comparable to other brands we use.

The taste was better than I expected it to be. It tastes more buttery than I remember it tasting it in the past. My children didn't comment either way, which is usually a good sign as if they didn't like it they would have been vocal about the taste.

I would definitely consider iNew Flora Original as a brand of spread that I would buy. I am not particularly loyal to one brand as buy from a range of two or three depending on what is on offer. One advantage Flora does provide is Omega 3, as my son had a fish allergy this is something lacking in his diet so that is a big bonus for us with Flora. As previously mentioned I will still continue to buy blocks of butter for baking.

I would recommend my friends and family to re-try Flora as it is very different from the spread I remember.
