My children are all teens so our issues have changed. I’d prefer it if they showered for a shorter length of time & remembered to open the bathroom windows as the extractor fan isn’t up to a steamy 40 minute shower, that they hung towels in the bathroom rather than on their bedroom doors & that they left the shower door open so mold didn’t grow on the grout.

My little boy is 2 and loves splashing and swimming so much we end up drenched. He loves throwing things out the bath so the floor ends up like a swimming pool too. He loves the bath so much he hates to get out too. So I have to show him what book we’ll read when he’s out of the bath and entice him with a faveourite toy.

I’m due to have twins in the next week and know bath time will get even busier and messier soon!

Biggest bath time hurdle is compromising on DD wanting to play with her mermaid Barbies forever and me needing to get her out to have time to dry hair, give her a bedtime drink and go to bed. Usually we get round this by saying we won't have enough time for a story. My DH and I make up stories, including some of her favourite toys, characters and places. She loves this and can't wait for the next instalment each night!

Biggest bedtime battle is the 4 DC arguing over the landing light- 2 want it off and 2 want it on. Aargh! I found a solution by buying them each a string of fairy lights for their rooms- only cost £1 each at Christmas. Problem solved 😁.

Non tester here!

Biggest hurdle is getting our smallest 2 to sleep when the bigger 2 are allowed up a bit later.

peronel · 16/04/2018 13:20

Non-tester.

My ds would never want my dh to read a bedtime story, it had to be me.
This caused problems as my dh felt rejected and there would sometimes be tantrums (from ds!). This resolved itself naturally as the children got older and now it is the opposite - dh and ds love to share stories together and I am the one feeling excluded!

Biggest hurdle now is getting my daughter to have a bath on a regular basis. I aim to just get her to have a bath as routine, but have 'encouragement' treats to help overcome this, such as bath bombs or soap that changes colour and so on.

telling us what your biggest bath and bedtime hurdles with your DCs are and how you overcome them

I know I'm not alone in using the sequential darkening of the house, turning off the lights in all the places I don't want them to be until they are forced upstairs to bed. They are 10 and 6 now, and it still works.

PickAChew · 17/04/2018 09:13

Non tester. When mine were little the biggest bathtime problem was water everywhere! We kept their baths very shallow and we're just grateful for a ground floor bathroom.

My challenge is sharing the bath, this ends up in lots of splashes and hard to get them out of the bath. Timers help.

HannahLI · 17/04/2018 13:40

I think the hardest thing is keeping the water in the bath. I want bathtime to be really fun and let the kids play and enjoy themselves but I also want my bathroom to not be overrun with water! Its a tricky balance to find. As for bedtime creating calm and quiet can always be tricky when you outnumbered kids to adults.

The biggest hurdle is being able to access the main family bathroom, DS1 and DD2 love their long baths (and I encourage it because they are smelly teens now) but we do have to plan it carefully to make sure everyone gets to use the bathroom before it gets too late. I have to keep a second set of toiletries for everyone in the shower room so they can use that instead.

Non-tester.. having to bath an extra small preemie baby. Fisher price bath with a sling/hammock in it to help keep baby safe allowing me to gain in confidence as baby grew.

My biggest bath time hurdle is my little boy loves the bath until water touches his head or face then it's cries galore! Finding it hard to get his hair washed

Bedtime hurdle is he is refusing naps. He's 6 months old and no matter how hard I try he will not nap past 5pm the last week so it makes him really overtired and crying till he conks out after 5 hours then all night he is a really restless sleeper. Fidgeting, slamming legs up then down, rolling onto side, crying for dummy. All while never fully awake. I am exhausted and not sure what to try

StickChildNumberTwo · 17/04/2018 18:53

Non-tester - biggest hurdle is children not listening and doing what they're asked, and so everything taking many times longer than it should have. Solutions tend to involve shouting and bribery...

AveAtqueVale · 17/04/2018 18:55

Non-tester- our biggest hurdle is definitely negotiating the after-bath when I do bedtime on my own. I bath my three year old and nine month old together, and whichever way round I get them dried and dressed either the older one ends up running round the flat naked or the baby ends up screaming Confused.

ailsasheldon · 17/04/2018 19:01

Our biggest bath time hurdles are stopping all three of them getting in together , making bubble factories and flooding the bathroom!

ladygoingGaga · 17/04/2018 20:57

Biggest hurdle for me was trying to stop bathroom looking like a scene from Waterworld. With two DC’s it soon deteriorated into laughter and splashing, hard to get cross with that as my youngest DS first proper laugh was in the bath.
So I kept towels used just for the floor, DC’s loved getting out and sitting on the floor to dry off too.

Still have those towels Grin

Belmo · 18/04/2018 10:53

Non tester - mine is both dc wanting me at the same time / haven’t found an answer to that yet! I need a clone...

jesseejohnston · 18/04/2018 13:02

My ds is 8 months and just wants to sit up but he splashes so much and slips and slides water hits him in the face! We've had to borrow his cousins pink baby seat so he can't slide around😂

Our biggest bath time hurdles have definitely been when it comes to hair washing. Both our children have gone through phases of screaming when we tried to wash their hair in the bath - luckily we found a way of making it fun which seems to have helped.

To start off with we wet their hair with our hand and then add the shampoo. We get them to help us make the shampoo frothy as it gets them involved in the process and we have a little song we sing when doing that. Once it's time to rinse off the shampoo we get each child to look up to the ceiling and get them to count to ten along with us. With each number we pour a small amount of water over the back of their hair using our other hand to bring a small amount forward towards the hair line but not enough that it will go in their eyes.

By time we have got to ten the shampoo suds have all washed away and then they both get a sticker at the end.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 18/04/2018 19:37

Biggest bathtime hurdles:

  1. Getting DC in to the bath.
  2. Getting DC out of the bath.
It seems that they hate the bath unless they're actually in it.
Hk24498 · 19/04/2018 11:53

My biggest bathtime struggle with my 4 month old is that as soon as he is out of the water he goes into major meltdown! He just loves his bath! I wrap him up in his big hooded towel (which has the compulsory bear ears of course) but he still grizzles. I'm learning baby massage and hoping that might help soothe him after.

danigrace · 20/04/2018 07:18

Currently the biggest challenge is getting my 8.5 month old out of the bath, if as soon as I've scooped him out I bend to let him choose one of his little bath toys to bring with us to get dry that usually acts as a good enough distraction

lfcvicki · 20/04/2018 13:22

My daughters have always hated having their hair washed but one day I made the "beard" game up. It was to see who could make the best "beard" from the suds - and the best suds just happen to come from shampooed hair! So my daughters collect the suds in a plastic bowl and I rinse their hair. Then they have ten minutes playtime where they get stuck into the suds! I also put a shower cap on them to prevent the shampoo getting in their hair again.
