This is the feedback thread for the 250 Mumsnetters who tested LloydsPharmacy Solero sun creams.

Here’s what LloydsPharmacy has to say: “April 2016 sees the launch of our reformulated and re-packaged own brand of suncare range, Solero. We understand that our customers’ skin is as unique as they are, which is why we have introduced a range of suncream that is perfect for every type of skin – an ultra-sensitive range for skin prone to eczema (atopic dermatitis) and psoriasis, which has been dermatologically tested and approved, and a triple defence range that protects from 3 types of harmful rays, UV-A, UV-B and Infrared-A”

We tested the Solero Kids Spray and the Solero Triple Defence IRA

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
I tested them on an afternoon visit to the park/beach.

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
I loved the size of the sample bottles as they fit into your bag so easily but unfortunately thats pretty much where the love ended. Don't get me wrong both lotions did exactly what they said on the pack, they didn't cause any skin reactions and protected both of our skins from the sun.

The kids one was SPF 50+ and came in a spray bottle, i normally wouldn't use anything higher than SPF 30 on my little boy so that would affect me buying it again.

Neither lotions really have a smell and seem to leave a sticky residue after having been rubbed in, i prefer coconutty smelling sun lotions as makes me think of summer but i know everyone is different.

I didn't have a problem with their consistencies, if anything i felt the SPF 50+ kids one was easier to rub in than previous SPF 50s I've tried.

Thank you so much for the samples, they will be perfect to keep in my bag for the summer but I'm afraid i will probably stick to my normal sun lotions.

me and the family tested LloydsPharmacy Solero cream at the beach wehn we went to Spain last week, i have to say i think it is great in comparising to other suncreams we have bought in the past, it leaves your skin smooth and fresh, not greasy smearing, and deff no burning, woulfd deff recomend to family and friends xxx

itslookingbright · 22/06/2016 16:14

I tested these in my garden in a sunny day and I found the ultra sensitive sun lotion very good, I used some on myself and some on my daughter. The best part about it was the light feeling, it didn't feel like adding sun lotion but more like a moisturiser. I suffer from eczema so this felt good on my skin as there was no smell to it either.
I wasn't too keen on the kids sun lotion, I found it had a sticky feel on the skin, also I don't like a spray bottle for sun lotion.

Lolaura · 22/06/2016 16:44

Q1:When and where did you test the sun cream?
We went on Holiday early June to Cornwall. Temperature's were mid to high 20s all week. Whilst using this cream, Jacob didn't burn at all.
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
I normally use Banana Boat, which is a lot finer, so quicker and easier to put on a wriggling toddler. Solero is good, in the sense that it does the job, goes on easy and doesn't irritate LOs skin, but it isn't so good that I would switch brands.

Fourormore · 22/06/2016 16:44

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
I tested the sun cream on a hot day in our back garden.

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
It was okay. I liked that the smell was mild. I probably wouldn't buy it based on the fact it has to be reapplied regularly (the children hate having it applied!) and also the 3 star rating.

Beautymama · 22/06/2016 16:55

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
We tested the sun cream over the two weeks we had of sun in Scotland it was mega hot, so the creams were perfect for our sunny days in the garden. We also used the creams on our day trip with school, so I got to share some with the other teachers.
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
It was really good, my youngest daughter has really sensitive skin but the cream was really good for her skin, so was really pleased with the outcome. We normally use Morrison brands, but would definitely change over or swap from time to tim. Only thing that I found with the creams was the smell was really strong! But definitely didn't put us off. Very easy to apply and really smooth on the kids skin. ( tested on my 10 month old, 5 year old, 16 year old )

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
I put the cream on my children for school (the school doesnt do this) and for the trip to the park afterwards
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
The cream seemed to last the day on my school child which was good though it wasnt the hottest of days so not a complete test. The application was good, i liked the spray especially and i dont usually get this.

When and where did you test the sun cream?

The timing of this trial couldn't have been any better, my samples arrived 2 hours before we left for the airport. I put them in with my hand luggage which was so handy when we arrived & the kids as usual wanted to go straight off & explore! The kids lotion was brilliant, if I had to find a criticism them maybe the bottle could be a bit more grippy as after a few sprays it was very sticky and hard to hold but we solved this problem by me squirting & dad rubbing in. 2 very excited kids lotioned & ready to go in no time :) My youngest can be prone to sensitive skin but had no reaction, even in the high temperatures, it was easily absorbed and didn't leave them sticky.

Hubby & I used the triple defence, he is bald & pretty much always burns his head in the first day or two of holidays but having the travel bottle to hand made it easy for him to remember to do so no burning (or horrid head flaking) this time 😀
Again both found it absorbed easily and once it had been absorbed didn't leave us too sticky. It has a smell but it's not overpowering or offensive so no complaints there.

How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?

Overall we were all pleased with the product, I generally buy Nivea sun protection but would definitely consider changing as although the performance is on par the Lloyds products are substantially cheaper.

Thank you.

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
We road tested on a couple of sunny afternoons in the garden (the swing test).
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
My toddler isn't keen on suncream, and I can't say he found this one any more favourable! However the kids spray was applied reasonably quickly. The spray was efficient at getting the product out (I've struggled with those in the past) and the cream didn't smell offensive. It was easy to rub in, too, although he did have a been of a shiny sheen afterwards, which I can't say I liked. However for a very fair tot he didn't burn, which I think is the important bit! I tested the triple defence and found the cream easy to apply and I certainly like the claims and didn't burn. I would be happy to use again, but probably if they were on special offer. I personally prefer once a day creams - that way I know topping up later is being cautious rather that obligatory. However, was alarmed to read the instructions stating "reapply after 15 minutes"! I've never heard of that before. Certainly reapply, but that soon?

allybird1 · 22/06/2016 21:06
  1. Before school or nursery. Also at the weekend in the garden and on a day trip.
  2. I thought that the ultra sensitive sun lotion and spray were really good. I didn't find it sticky at all. I thought it went on well, so you knew you were wearing it but no that it was tacky on the skin. It was great that it doesn't smell and that it was specifically designed for sensitive skin. my husband also suffers from prickly heat so I am going to test it on him if it ever gets warm again.
thanks for letting me try the products.
TheLittleMe · 22/06/2016 21:10

I was one of the chosen Mumsnetters to test the sensitive spray and cream.

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
I tested the cream whilst playing in the garden with my kids, and at the local park. Both occasions were rare sunny days. Once applied the children went on the trampoline, in the paddling pool and on various play equipment at the park.

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
I liked Lloyds Pharmacy Solero. I love the lack of strong fragrance - it made me feel it was kinder to my children's skin than leading popular kids suncream brands. The spray seemed to rub into my children's skin easier than the cream - the cream felt heavier. The spary bottle was a bit difficult to spray with one hand which was annoying, as the hand got oily and made it even harder to spray. The cream and spray unfortunately were extremely sticky and greasy - I had to wipe my hands on a towel after applying to get rid of it. This puts me off a suncream - I like creams that blend in easily and don't linger on parents' hands. I usually use the blue Nivea for kids spray suncream, which rubs in like a dream and I can see where it has been applied. I find the Nivea one expensive though and wonder about how good it is for young skin.

cathpj1 · 22/06/2016 21:18

Didn't receive a kids sample to test so this feedback based on the triple defence protection cream.
I tested it in our garden last week and initially was thick and sticky when applied to my skin. Not overly keen on the smell compared to the one we usually buy. It is however fairly well priced compared to other products available in the market. Would be unlikely to switch to this from our usual brand.

Kerfuffled · 22/06/2016 21:24

I tested the children's spray and the triple defence. It was tested at home in the garden and DD also tested the kid's one on her school trip. I liked them both and found they absorbed fairly easily and seemed to do what they are designed too. Neither caused any skin irritation and the spray bottle was ideal for 6 year old DD, as she could reapply it herself. The only thing I didn't like was the clear plastic cap on the spray bottle. I don't know if the full sizes have it but size and being clear means it is all too easily lost.

I normally use whatever sun cream is on offer or cheapest; currently using Lacura. Although I'd happily use Solero again there was nothing about it that made it vastly different to any others and as I am rarely near a Lloyds Pharmacy I'm probably unlikely to buy it.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 22/06/2016 22:55

Q1: We used it first thing in the morning before the school run, so mainly used it for school, although we did use it for the beach once.

Q2: I'd say I didn't notice any difference from the usual brand I use (Ambre Solaire) the kids enjoyed applying the cream and the little bottle size was easier for their smaller hands to use. Neither of them had a skin reaction to the cream nor complained about any smell (hurrah!) and the Lloyds cream seems to be working (we've had at least three hot days up here as well Wink ) Thank you for the opportunity, especially as my youngest has sensitive skin so I have to be extra cautious about what we use.

Mama2bubs · 22/06/2016 23:08

I tested them on a trip to the park, in the garden, and on a school day when it was warm.

I did like the suncreams as they were suitable for sensitive skin. They rubbed in well and smelt quite pleasant. They did seem to prevent my kids skin from burning. However I don't know if I would buy the cream, I tend to buy creams when they're on offer. I found the spray bottle difficult to use, the cream made my hands sticky so it was hard to use the pump on the bottle. I also found that the creams stained my children's clothes. I prefer creams that don't have to be applied as often.

VickyRsuperstar · 23/06/2016 05:11

Thanks for choosing us to test. We were very lucky that we used them on the few brief hot days we had before the rain set in!
We used it when the kids were at the park all day and they were all fine at the end of the day with no red or pinkness
We liked the suncreams, they were easy to apply, one was a little bit too sticky afterwards, but they did the job well.
I liked the small handy bottle size as it was perfect for carrying around.
I thought it was a good suncream if you are with your kids and can re-apply it, but its not quite so good if you apply it before school as you can't be there to reapply it as directed. We normally use suncreams that last a bit longer without reapplying. Also the price is a bit steep for me. Usually I pay £4-5 for a bottle of good suncream in the supermarket on a special offer. Other than that we were very happy with it.

LastOneDancing · 23/06/2016 07:46
  1. We tested the triple and kids lotion on holiday in Devon and I have used the kids mini spray numerous times in the park/days out etc. as it's a really good size to leave in the buggy bag.
  1. I normally use whatever is on offer and the Lloyds cream was comparable with any of the big names. It was quite yellow and I did find it left a residue on my sweaty toddlers cheeks! The triple defence also didn't have that smell of 'holidays' which others e.g. Boots Soltan do.
However I loved the small size and will probably buy another kids bottle to keep in the bag. I also liked how quickly the triple defence was absorbed - my hands weren't greasy after which was much better for sandy beaches. Nobody got burned despite good weather so it appears to offer good, long lasting defence.
Boglin · 23/06/2016 11:47

Thanks for the opportunity to test these products and apologies for it taking me so long to add feedback, the weather has been so bad where I am that there really hasn't been an opportunity to test the sun cream! However, yesterday there was a glimmer of sunshine so I went for it.

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
In the UK, before heading out to the park.

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
We were away a few weeks ago and used the cream we have used for the last few years, the Jason family sunscreen as it is one of the few that we found didn't aggravate my son's eczema. My son complained every time we put it on that it stung his skin so he was really reluctant to have it applied. When I used the Lloyds Ultra Sensitive cream yesterday the first thing he said was 'it doesn't sting!'. It absorbed really well and I didn't notice any problems with his skin later on. The price is almost half that of the Jason one so I will definitely be switching to the Lloyds cream from now on!

My daughter doesn't have the same skin issues as my son so I used the Kids spray on her and again, no problems. For ease, I will probably just buy the Ultra Sensitive for both of them though.

OneDadOneBlog · 23/06/2016 17:09

We used it for a recent weekend away in Wales where we spent most of the time on the beach.

I wasn't overly keen on the smell (although this is something you learn to get used to having used the same brand since before I can remember) the lotion also seemed to take a long while to soak in but once it did didn't feel sticky and the sand wasn't too bad sticking to it either.
