This is the feedback thread for the 250 Mumsnetters who tested LloydsPharmacy Solero sun creams.

Here’s what LloydsPharmacy has to say: “April 2016 sees the launch of our reformulated and re-packaged own brand of suncare range, Solero. We understand that our customers’ skin is as unique as they are, which is why we have introduced a range of suncream that is perfect for every type of skin – an ultra-sensitive range for skin prone to eczema (atopic dermatitis) and psoriasis, which has been dermatologically tested and approved, and a triple defence range that protects from 3 types of harmful rays, UV-A, UV-B and Infrared-A”

Non-tester? For a chance to win a LloydsPharmacy skin care hamper worth over £75 answer the below question:

  • What are your favourite holiday destinations for taking the kids away?

Testers, please ensure that you have completed this survey and left feedback below to be entered into the £300 voucher prize draw.

Below are some questions, but please feel free to add any other comments you have regarding your testing of LloydsPharmacy Solero sun cream:

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?

Thanks, and good luck!

  1. We tested a few times, in full sun and on a couple of warmer, but less intensively hot days. We used it on the school run, going for walks and out at the park, as well as splashing about in the garden.
  2. I found the suncream gentle on my LOs skin. We chose the sensitive skin version, as my LO has eczema. It wasn't strongly perfumed, which I prefer and applied well. I liked the colour, as I find that the blue\green cream stains. I would have preferred it if the cream lasted longer as I found that it needed reapplying every couple of hours. A once a day version would have been better.

My favourite place to take a child on holiday is Cornwall. Wonderful beaches and rock pools. Riding schools are plentiful. Long or short walks are easy to find and we were never at a loss for things to do - even if the weather wasn't kind.

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
We have just arrived from a week in Italy and tested it on the beach.
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?

The cream was very thick and although it performed well in 30°C heat it stained clothes yellow and remained sticky even after some time. The spray was great for a quick top up on the kids, even on the face. As is to be expected with most sprays, it remained greasy on the surface of the skin too. However it caused no irritation on my 2 yr olds skin and it was essentially odourless which is always a plus!I think if I came across this cream at my local supermarket I would definitely consider buying it.

What are your favourite holiday destinations for taking the kids away?

My favourite place to take DD to is the Cayo islands in Cuba. Safe, warm beaches and a lovely carefree environment enjoying a very different culture and practising a little Spanish.

colleenw · 20/06/2016 14:39

-What are your favourite holiday destinations for taking the kids away?
It has to be a camping holiday in Cornwall and 2nd place would be mainland Spain :)

DebbieWobbs · 20/06/2016 16:25

I have not tested theSolero sun cream.
My favourite places to take the kids on holiday are usually Spanish resorts. I like them as they are only a short flight away, there are a huge variety of different resorts to try, I can usually get everything I need for the children in the local shops and the health services are excellent if one of us falls ill while we are away, As a family we loved Portinatx in Ibiza, and Mojacar in Costa Almeria because they are both quieter resorts but still with a bit of life in them, with a more Spanish feel than some busier ,more touristy places.

My children are older and we know there are only a few family holidays left. My favourite place is Hawaii, we had a wonderful time on the north coast of Maui. We tend to spend the summer holidays in the UK as it is so beautiful in the summer, we like the South Coast.

Amummyatlast · 20/06/2016 17:36

Q1 - tested it on DH (redhead) during a trip to the park at the weekend.

Q2 - he strongly disliked it, finding it sticky and cheap feeling. But he didn't burn.

We tried an Ambre Solaire kids sensitive sun cream on DD at the same time (we weren't given the kids version of Solaro and the Solero version we were given was too low a factor for her). The difference was striking - the Ambre Solaire version wasn't sticky, it applied really easily and at the end of the day her skin felt moisturised rather than having the usual sun cream ickyness. It was also the same price as the Solero sun cream.

What are your favourite holiday destinations for taking the kids away?

I am Italian and I think Italy offers good beaches in particular in the South. I also like Greece.

AtSea1979 · 20/06/2016 18:06

I've left feedback but I keep getting emailed as though I haven't so try this again...

Good product, not skin reactions only drawback is it doesn't last all day.

Queenelsarules · 20/06/2016 19:48

Product tested at home in garden and on days out. I liked the ease of application and it didn't make my son's excema flare up. I definitely would consider the extra sensitive cream for the kids, but for myself I use the Aldi sensitive which is much cheaper.

Ashhead24 · 20/06/2016 20:12

Non tester. Anywhere sunny with nice food and a good kids pool. I like last minute deals so look for 5* but don't mind where.

Our children are aged 3.5 and 10 months do we haven't yet dared to take them abroad! We have had some lovely holidays in Devon, nice beaches, scrummy ice cream and cream teas, not too far by car (from the Midlands) and we seem to get lucky with the sunshine!

MrsGaz11 · 20/06/2016 20:26

We tested the sun cream over the last couple of weeks in our garden, at theme parks, and before school.

i liked the prices, and the fact that the kids didn't need to have the cream reapplied during the day, and they didn't burn at all during the heat waves we have had, despite being exposed for long periods during the days, when out and about.
There was no overwhelming smell, and the spray was very light and soaked into the kids skin easier than the cream. The kids have sensitive skin, and they didn't complain once about either cream, which is a bonus.
The cream left a very sticky feel to the skin, and was a bit of a pain to wash off of your hands after application. The spray was slippery when handling after application, perhaps a bit of grip on the bottle itself, but not a huge issue. On the whole, they were very good at sun protection, and a bit of stickiness compared to burnt skin, is a no brainer really. I'd be happy to purchase these in the future, and have recommended these to friends.

feeona123 · 20/06/2016 20:52

I tested the cream at home in the garden last week.

The cream seemed just as good as the normal brand we use. It smelled nice and didn't leave my hands feeling too sticky. It's nice to have both the spay option and also the tube version.

Tester

Sadly we got this after the lovely sunny weekend and then had a fluey bug in the family so have only had one day where we have needed suncream since but at least we have had chance to test it a bit.

Kids spray:
This was tested on 2yo DD and 8mo DS
Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream? Went to Longleat Safari Park at the beginning of June
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use? I thought that the spray went on well. It wasn't sticky and it didn't have much of a smell. My daughter didn't object to it and neither child had a reaction to it, despite having very sensitive skin. Neither burnt so it did its job as well. I would (and probably will) buy this again for the sunny weather (when it comes back!)

UltraSensitive
I tested this on myself (fair skin, burns easily)
Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream? Longleat, beginning of June
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use? It protected me well but I found it sticky/greasy - it didn't absorb into my skin well. I would probably not buy this suncream, but would use the Lloyds Pharmacy Kids suncream instead as I thought that went on well.

If we get more sun and I have any more comments I'll be back...

warnc007 · 20/06/2016 21:15

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
We tested them when we had a nice couple of days and went to local parks.

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
I found them fairly easy to apply and not too sticky, they didn't cause any skin irritation at all and seemed to prevent my family and I from burning at all. We usually use Boots Soltan but I wouldn't be against using the products again. I never shop in Lloyds and don't think I would make a special trip there to buy the suncream but would happily pop in and get some if I were passing.

StrawberryLeaf · 20/06/2016 22:26

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
We tested the sun cream when we saw the sun (we live in Scotland). Used for nursery and being out at the park
Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
Tester was easy to apply but didn't seem to absorb as well as my usual sun cream (I generally buy Lacura from Aldi). It is more expensive than my usual. I don't think I would buy this one over my usual brand as it is more expensive.

Andbabymakesthree · 20/06/2016 22:33

We tested over half term during good weather. Park, days out etc.

Not as easy as normal brand to rub in (Jason ) but gave good protection.

Fave holiday destinations with our toddler daughter, Cornwall and Devon, beautiful places well worth the ridiculous drive!!
Rome, amazing place, child friendly culture, restaurants that serve children real food! Awesome!

Moogdroog · 21/06/2016 12:08

Thanks for letting us test!

  1. We managed to use it for a couple of days before the good weather disappeared. One full day in the garden, and another at a local outdoor event.
  2. I liked it. Was easy to apply compared with a few brands I've tried, rubbed in easily without leaving patches. Smell was pretty pleasant, and most importantly, no body got burned!
RedLarvaYellowLarva · 21/06/2016 15:51

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
Sunny days in the farden, UK.

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
I don't have one regular brand, I use various ones at the same time. But in general, I like a nicer smell. Like coconut or something tropical that makes me feel like I'm somewhere exotic.
Did a fine job though, no burning, and it got pretty hot here, despite being the UK. Slightly greasy though.
Mainly on the basis of lack of smell, I'd not actively seek it out to buy it again.
I also like a bit more of an organic hippy vibe to my skin products, especially for the kids, like JASON.
Sorry!

CathyGlynn · 21/06/2016 17:20

We love to go to the Canary Islands, there is always a pleasant breeze to keep children more cool in the hot sun. Although a good sunscreen is required regularly.

BrickInTheWall · 21/06/2016 19:57

Q1: When and where did you test the sun cream?
Unfortunately by the time we received the sun creams our scottish heatwave was over! We havent had any really hot days that I would usually use sunscreen for but we used it on a moderately warm day just so we could test. We were in the garden and walking about town

Q2: How did you think LloydsPharmacy Solero compared to the brand you normally use?
I usually use Soltan and I think I prefer it to the lloyds suncream. I really liked the smell and it was really easy to apply and quick to absorb. I did find it a little sticky for a little while after applying but not a huge problem.
I dont think it is very good value for money if it is to be reapplied every 1-2 hours.. I couldnt guarantee we would be in a place I could stop to apply that often so that put me off. Plus I have 4 kids so would pretty much be constantly reapplying someone!!
I think if it were more competively priced and offered longer protection it definitely would be one of the brands I would buy.
