This thread is for the 15 Mumsnetters who tried Universal’s Decorative Egg Wraps with their DCs.

Here’s what Universal say, “These shrink to fit Egg Wraps featuring your favourite movie characters the Minions, E.T. and E.B. The Easter Bunny are great fun to watch – place one around a medium hard boiled egg, add to boiling water and they will shrink around the egg to make a cool Easter breakfast or the basis for movie themed Easter Egg hunt! Better yet, these wraps are free with selected kids DVD’s starting from just £3. Titles include Despicable Me, Hop, Coraline, Moshi Monsters, Mr Bean and Curious George and many more.”

Non-testers: Have you ever used Egg Wraps before with your DCs? If so, what did you think of them? If not, do you decorate Easter eggs in another way with your DCs?

Everyone who adds their comments to the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 John Lewis voucher!

Testers: We’d like you to answer the questions below but please feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

these look really great, would love to get my hands on these for making eggs for the wee man :)

Pipermimi · 15/03/2015 09:13

Non-tester. BB thinks they will be fun to try. Never heard of them but they look great. Will try next year as have purchased the usual feathers, paints, sequins etc to decorate with.

humtum16 · 15/03/2015 09:44

Never heard of them, but will definitely be trying!

melvis · 15/03/2015 11:39

We've never used egg wraps but we like to decorate hard boiled eggs every year ... my favourite was "a french man selling onions to a lion in the jungle" - inspired by a stripey egg cup (which became the french man's shirt!)

We decorated eggs for the first time last year. Like others I boiled the eggs first and then let DD free with her imagination, felt tips and some sparkly stickers. The finished effect was v colourful. The egg wraps probably look more professional but would maybe suit my less creative son more.

I've actually never heard of them but would love to give them a try!

andy07 · 15/03/2015 14:37

never heard of egg wrap but we always have an egg decorating competition on Easter Sunday just for fun.

I used to use egg wraps with my mum when we were little. After dying them with food colouring

deanhead1 · 15/03/2015 14:43

never used them. we paint eggs every year. great fun

pinklady123456 · 15/03/2015 15:10

Love the idea of these egg wraps. I decorate eggs with my daughter each year, usually a mix of glitter glue, feathers and everything else which ends up all over, although last year she demanded an Elsa Frozen egg which due to my limited drawing skills was not great.

I haven't heard of the egg wraps before but they sound great! We usually paint foam or polystyrene eggs, every time we've tried painting hard boiled eggs we've had a cracking incident which turns into a big meltdown Hmm

not tried it but use normal art paint from the shops

It's the first time I hear of egg-wraps, sounds like a cool idea for older kids who have favourite cartoon characters.
This will be the first Easter that we attempt egg decorationg with my DD. I think we'll stick to the traditional ways of decorating this year using food colouring and water :)

joanf · 15/03/2015 16:41

Never heard of these before, but they sound great. We usually dye them then decorate with glitter, cotton wool etc.

purplediva · 15/03/2015 17:13

not heard of them before, but they look great fun
We are going to make some Easter Eggs this year and try and decorate them with icing sweets and edible glitter

jessiecat33 · 15/03/2015 18:24

I have never heard of them, we use pens, paints and all manner of sticking and glueing items to decorate our eggs at home x

trice · 15/03/2015 18:35

I think that egg decorating should be creative. I always use sharpies.

ArcheryAnnie · 15/03/2015 19:47

Just another scrap of plastic junk that will be amusing for five seconds then end up in landfill. What a waste of both resources and creativity. Why let your kids loose with food colouring to do their own creative thing when you could spend money, add to environmental problems and they could make exactly the same corporate product as everyone else?

xxgeexx · 15/03/2015 19:49

i love this! we normally make silly faces on our with paints! x

mouseybabe · 15/03/2015 20:34

I have never heard of egg wraps. I feel that my DS is probably a bit too young to use them. We will just use marker pens for faces and bits from the craft box for clothes

Annbunce · 15/03/2015 20:38

We use glitter, paints and felt tips x

shroney · 15/03/2015 20:48

I've never heard of them before but they look brilliant, usually we use stickers and glitter glue.

Lariflete · 15/03/2015 21:00

I've never used egg wraps, but we decorate eggs by wrapping them in onion skins, then cloth and boiling for approximately 10 minutes. The natural dye in onion gives them beautiful colours and patterns.
I think I might use egg wraps to decorate eggs for eating as the eggs we decorate are used for our family egg-roll on Easter Day.

Tester!

1)What were your overall impressions of the Egg Wraps? Did you like them, or not? What did your DCs think?
I thought they looked nice, very clear lovely pictures. Daughter also thought they looked very bright and liked the choice of characters (although would have liked a big curious george pic!)

2)Which Egg Wrap was your favourite? Why?
Both mine and daughter liked the minion best, it just suited being egg shaped so much :D

3)Can you describe to other Mumsnetters how you had to use the Egg Wraps? Did you find the overall process easy, or not?
yep - put around boiled egg, plunge in boiling water, done. Dead easy, and simple and fun.

4)Do you think you’d recommend them to friends and/or family if it came up in conversation? If so, why? If not, why not?
definitely! Fun little craft that doesn't take long and made my daughter keen to eat a boiled egg, I'm not sure she'd have been sold on it being a snack otherwise!

5)Do you think you’d use them again? If so, why? If not, why not?
we will get some for easter for an egg hunt i think now! as well as decorating a few by hand, these will be fun additions

Picture is eggs ready to take to school tomorrow to show!

We have never used egg wraps but it sounds like a cool idea, we are more of the just cover them in anything and, usually, everything. We have lots of craft items so everything seems to be put to use!
