There are a few things we sit and watch together but always X factor and Britains got Talent :)

rockpink · 28/10/2014 16:29

Non testers here.

We like watching the Pop channel together, especially Finding Stuff Out which we think is awesome. DS (6) also loves Pointless, DD (9) loves My Little Pony.
It would be nice to have more channels though as where we live (semi-rural North East) has only 6 freesat channels (is that what they are called?)

We haven't had proper Skyfor years, mainly due to not being able to afford the subscription, but we were overjoyed that our rental property came with an old Sky dish still attached and a secondhand Sky box, with which we can watch the free channels ("poverty Sky" as my DSis calls it.)

Personally I'd like to be able to watch Top Gear !!

mynellie · 28/10/2014 19:23

non tester we all get together to watch Emmerdal and also Game of Thrones

andadietcoke · 28/10/2014 19:29

AnnMumsnet thank you, that's brilliant. As I said, not a massive thing in the scale of things but a minor annoyance which is now fixed Grin

mumtowoo1 · 28/10/2014 19:47

granma12 · 28/10/2014 20:05

Kem99 · 28/10/2014 20:48

Non tester - We all love to watch Tipping Point and my DS loves Gogglebox, so we are all subjected to it!

selloveday · 28/10/2014 22:12

Non Tester. We love to watch Strictly together as its good family friendly TV.

TickleMyTitsTillFriday · 28/10/2014 22:21

Non tester here Smile as a family we always used to watch Dr Who but nowadays it's the x factor. Although me and DH always watch the apprentice with dd (15).
Me and dd also love American Horror Story. We keep the young ones away from that Wink

TickleMyTitsTillFriday · 28/10/2014 22:21

Oh and Gogglebox of course!

hunhun007 · 28/10/2014 22:24

we really like to watch Grand Designs as a family - kids place bets as to how much trouble the family will get during the program and they always tell us about their dream home - which actually changes from week to week :-)

maureen3733 · 29/10/2014 09:52

x factor

gloworm123 · 29/10/2014 15:37

Non tester - The news & weather. The latter to see what our plans are for the next day.

sscrase · 29/10/2014 15:48

No regular programmes spring to mind, though we are watching Takeshi's Castle at the moment. We do though always make a point of a Sunday evening family movie all together before bed time.

topsmart · 29/10/2014 18:01

Tester here (thank you thank you!).

1 Did you set up your YouView box yourself? If not, who did?

My DH set it up one evening, took him no time at all. I'd like to flag that it's not always the man of the house who does the technical jobs; he just couldn't wait and I was out!

2 How easy did you find it to set up your YouView box?

He found it very easy.

3 How long did it take you to understand how to use YouView?

Mere moments. Menu system and remote control are very intuitive. Quickly found and set all of our favourite programs to record with series links.

4 Has your child/children used YouView? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?

Both children (age 2 and 7) are enjoying it. The younger one is too young to understand how to use it, but it's made her happy as she knows she can access all of peppa pig series 1 to 3 :)
The 7 year old has no bother finding the kids' channels / catch up episodes. She even created playlists on the Milkshake viewer just for her little sister when she was poorly, to cheer her up.

5 Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on YouView so far?

All our usual ones. Peppa pig mainly, especially since we discovered you can watch an entire series back to back through the Milkshake channel viewer. Grand designs, made in Chelsea, x factor, strictly...
The on-demand viewers' layouts also help us to spot new things which we might not otherwise have seen (hadn't realised the Great Interior Design Challenge was back on bbc until I saw it advertised on iplayer; love that series!)

6 Which of the services have you most enjoyed so far?

We like that the series link offers you the choice between normal and HD versions, before asking if you want to record that specific episode or the whole series. It's so easy to navigate between our recorded programmes, the tv guide and the catch up. The search function is very good. We've moved to it from Sky and I haven't missed anything other than access to sky atlantic and sky living. The menu system is lovelier to use than Sky's.

7 Who in your family has used your YouView box the most?

Probably the 2 year old as she's been home with a tummy bug recently!

8 What have you found YouView most useful for so far? Catching up on shows you've missed/ entertaining the kids/finding something to watch to pass time/ watching TV live/ listening to the radio/ search functionality / scrolling back 7 days on the programme guide / using the on demand players or the record functionality?

I hadn't twigged I could scroll back 7 days in the programme guide until I read this question, so thank you for alerting me! I usually navigate to past-broadcast programmes through the individual catch up services.
All of the other things have been used and appreciated - we're used to being able to catch up (though not with milkshake) through Sky, as well as record and search - but I think youview's search is much nicer to navigate.

9 Have you used NOW TV or Sky Store to watch films?

Not yet - we still have Sky tv until end of month and we also have amazon Instant - but we do intend to try them out soon.

10 Did you try out the free YouView remote record app?

Not yet, as I've already programmed everything from home. Once I've got some space on my phone I shall install the app and have a go.

And feel free to add any additional comments.

Just wanted to say Thank You.
We were looking for a way to get rid of Sky (would like to say bye bye to Murdoch and also save money) and this is most definitely it.
We get everything we got with sky with the exception of sky living & sky atlantic - we'll just have to live without those channels and rent box sets to catch up with madmen, game of thrones and scandal! I love that now the box is ours there is nothing more to pay. Youview and humax are the way forward!

Spirael · 29/10/2014 19:50

Non tester. We all watch Swashbuckle together! In our defence, DD1 is 4 and DD2 is 5 months. Wink

peanutmum111 · 29/10/2014 21:13

The one programme which catches male and female, young and old and we sit and enjoy together is 'STRICTLY COME DANCING'.
The Saturday is a must and now 'It Takes Two', every weekday night building upto Saturday and Sunday.
So pleasure each night

eachpeachbarebum · 30/10/2014 12:20

Hi. first of all thank you for selecting me.it was like Christmas come early when it arrived before I even knew I'd been chosen!
1&2) I set it up. I usually do these sort of things but found this especially easy.it was good to have a booklet to work from rather than being directed to a website. The quick setup stickers on the box were also handy.
3) understanding how you view works was very quick.it is clear and straight forward . I like the onscreen layout.dor anyone who has used a box with sky, BT etc I think it will be a straightforward switch over. However I think there are more ways of using it and capabilities that we are all still to use. As with most things I think you tend to fall into a pattern of what and how you use something.
4) my dc, 7 and 4 are avid fans of netflix so I have had to actively encourage them towards this but they are very quick at picking it up, especially the pause option!!
5) we have watched all sorts on you view, including strictly, milkshake on demand (dc obviously!) cbeebies on demand, the driver, who do you think you are?, would I lie to you, not going out, news, only connect, the bake off; all sorts really. I would day are viewing has been more varied because of the catch up and record options.
6) I have most enjoyed the catch up and record options because our tv choices can fit in around family life rather than just making do with what's on when we get chance to sit down. I especially like being able to use on demand for it and channel 4. you view has certainly fed my appetite for all of channel 4 ' s property programmes.not sure my dc is so eased about that but he's happy to be able to record the rugby highlights so we are happy all round!
in the day when I'm pottering and cleaning I love being able to use it for the radio. unlike other boxes/providers I really like the fact that the tv screen is blank for the radio as if it's switched off.
7) I've definitely been the main user so far Blush but the rest of the family are catching up over half term!
8) the on demand/catch up has definitely been the most useful function so far.its great because at any time I know there is something for all of us.it is a really user friendly guide, particularly the last 7 day scroll back. Other indispensable functions are the pause/ resume function to accommodate family loo/snack and meal breaks! my ds loves being in charge of the "stop start"!
The record function is great too. basically these are the main things we liked about sky but we were paying £40 approx for the privilege. you view gives us complete control over our tv viewing without the monthly price tag.
9) we wanred to try family movie time over half term, particularly because we have all at various times been laid low with colds. great family time snuggled on sofa! I did try with talk talk. I have recently switched to them and it seemed to recognise the box and give us the option of pay per view films. However 1/3 of the way through the d's film the sound went. I spoke to talktalk who confirmed the Internet speed and connection was fine but that because I didn't subscribe to their tv service they couldn't help me with it and weren't responsible? ! I don't understand this.if I am able to pay for their service, surely it should work? I'd prefer to use them to sky but am a bit put off by this. guess I will try with sky next time to see if it's any better.
plan to try nowtv but am with netflix so don't want to overlap and pay for 2 very similar services.
9) I'm going to try the remote record app and report back this weekend. I have to say I've been a bit put off recording things due to a blip I had a few days after set up. an error code came up and I was directed to a website with very clear instructions but after exhausting the possible resolutions I had to reset the machine which meant I lost all our recordings to that date. It has worked fine since but I am a bit reticent to record lots to look forward to and then lose it if there is another error. having said that I have switched broadband provider around the same time so maybe it was something to do with that. We haven't had problems since.
In summary, this box will give you all the functions you could want without being tied in to an expensive contract. The box itself looks sleek and unobtrusive. There is nothing not to like about you view!

buckley1983 · 30/10/2014 22:28

We love a bit of Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom - enough to keep little one engaged for the full episode & some cheeky humour for mum & dad too! :)

retromummy · 30/10/2014 22:34

Strictly come dancing.

empire11 · 31/10/2014 02:09
