X factor, with a curry and cuddled up on the sofa.

pmcp15 · 21/10/2014 23:35

non-tester we always make a point of sitting down to watch X-Factor!!!! It's just one of those programmes that all the family can enjoy and the debates over the acts and especially the judges are legendary in our house :)

museumworker · 22/10/2014 10:02

Tester here, thanks sooo much for picking me. It came the day before my birthday so felt like a real present!

1 My partner set up the YouView box.
2 He found it really easy to set up and we were watching within minutes. Our internet is upstairs, but the plug ins were easy to set up.

3 It didn't take long at all to understand how to use the box - a 5-10 minute play (without reading the manual). I've had a Humax Freeview+ box before and the functionality is similar. Most of the main functions are under the blue youview button, so easy to find.

4 Yes, my 12 year old uses it, she watches CBBC programmes via iPlayer catch-up.

5 I've been watching Downton, Peaky Blinders, X Factor with the tweenager, The Apprentice, Educating the East End, and Scrotal Recall. Oh, and some welsh programmes (becca from last year's bake off has her own show, and Adam Price did a good programme on the Miner's Strike). Eclectic, no?

6 The services I've enjoyed the most so far are the on-demand content. I'm learning Welsh (in London), and so was over the moon to find S4C on demand on the box - that wasn't included with my freeview+ box! Plus we've used the on demand service to watch stuff from all the channels, which we couldn't have done with our last box which only had iPlayer. It is really easy to find programmes you missed and watch via the search facility, without having recorded them.

7 It's probably me and/or my son (aged 2 and 4 months) who has used the YouView box the most so far. I'm on maternity leave with a 3 month old (with reflux). My son likes a bit of Peppa Pig, but we've watched them to death so we've now discovered Little Princess (C5), Bing and Chuggington (iPlayer). Having it all the content ready to access without recording it is a life saver.

8 I've found YouView most useful so far for catching up on shows I've missed, entertaining the little one when it's been pelting with rain and we've played with every toy in the house/the baby is screaming. I don't need to watch live telly any more, so as long as I avoid social media (I don't want to know who got kicked off The Apprentice/won Bake Off thanks until I've seen it myself!) The search function is brilliant as it searches all of the on demand services as well as what is coming up in the next week so you can add it to your recording schedule.

9 We've not yet used the NowTV or Sky Store, but we're planning to do so over half term and Xmas. Definitely will use it to catch up with final series of Mad Men!

10 My partner put the free YouView remote record app on his tablet, and we've added programmes to the record schedule that way. It's great as he read a review of something he wanted to watch on the way to work and could add it straight away without having to remember when he got back home!

Overall, this is a big leap on from our FreeView+ box and I can't imagine us going back now. My only concern is that the on demand players can be a bit temperamental - I've had to reset the box 5 times in the last two weeks - whilst the toddler has screamed 'want more Princess!' If it continues I hope I can exchange for another to see if it is just a dodgy box. The recording function does seem more reliable than my FreeView+ box though.

Thanks again mumsnet!

DS (2) loves Strictly Come Dancing so that is a winner in our house!
As is Dinopaws!!

Once the children are in bed, it's The Apprentice or Homeland for me Sophie& DH!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 23/10/2014 11:08
  • just me & DH! (not anyone called Sophie??!!)

Dr Who. Has transcended generations. My Mum and I used to watch it through our fingers eating mint choc ices in the 70s, dd and I watch it now.

That and Strictly. Strictly just shrieks cold nights in the run up to Christmas and dd now 11 has gone from a 3 yr old wanting "to see the ladies in the pretty dresses" to guffawing at whatever lumpen lady Anton will be given this year.

She is also just getting into Casualty. (yes, Saturdays at our house our telly nights) and I firmly believe that should I ever need one, she'll be just as adept at doing a tracheotomy with a bic biro tube as I am.

MollyBdenum · 23/10/2014 17:27

Non tester - we all watch House of Anubis on CITV.

IAmAPaleontologist · 23/10/2014 20:46

non tester. We love watching David Attenborough together, looking forward to the new series starting today.

sadly my humax book that i got in the last product test seems to have snuffed it after a power cut Sad so i can't series link it and have lost all my other recordings. Very very sad. Have had to go back to an old bt box and i player not streaming particularly well when old humax was perfect Sad .

Please pick me!

Apprentice with ds or Great British Bake Off with the girls.

Tester: Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity, sorry for the delay in feeding back...

1 Did you set up your YouView box yourself? If not, who did?
I set it up myself

2 How easy did you find it to set up your YouView box?
Very easy. Even the powerlines adaptor, which worked a treat - I'd never even heard of them before, and have told loads of people about them since (aware that's not the point, but still...). Liked the pictures on the box that highlighted the order to do things and connect things properly. I'm not one for instructions normally, but found that really helpful

3 How long did it take you to understand how to use YouView?
I think it's fairly intuitive, which is obviously very good. Whenever I get stuck I just hit the blue button. Really like the search and the dynamic results, find it all so much easier to use than Virgin, which we have in the lounge. Even things which I was expecting to find tricky, like moving to radio channels was really easy. There hasn't been anything I've struggled to do.

4 Has your child/children used YouView? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?
They're 1, so it's a little bit beyond them ; )

5 Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on YouView so far?
I've loved catching up on The Apprentice while I've been cooking/tidying. Before the YouView box I would have just had something on in the background that I wasn't that bothered about, or would listen to music. However, it mainly gets used for the children for distracting them at dinner time or entertaining one while the other one finishes. Due to their age there's only a few things that will hold their attention (Waybuloo, In The Night Garden, Chuggington) and it's been great to be have them on demand, especially as it's so easy to get to the programme you want via the search function.

6 Which of the services have you most enjoyed so far?
Definitely OnDemand, but I like that the search asks you if you want a programme from Guide or OnDemand which gives you the option to jump to the Guide and then record something.

7 Who in your family has used your YouView box the most?
Me/the DTs

8 What have you found YouView most useful for so far? Catching up on shows you've missed/ entertaining the kids/finding something to watch to pass time/ watching TV live/ listening to the radio/ search functionality / scrolling back 7 days on the programme guide / using the on demand players or the record functionality?
Think I've probably harped on enough about on demand already. Do love that and the search though - Virgin's search is horrendous especially if you don't know whether you want catch up or on demand

9 Have you used NOW TV or Sky Store to watch films?
No, because we wouldn't be in the kitchen for long enough to benefit from a film

10 Did you try out the free YouView remote record app?
I've downloaded it to my iPhone but then haven't done the bit on the box to finalise the set up. Keep meaning to, but it's never a priority as the box is so easy to use (I use the Virgin app all the time because it's so much easier to use than the box to search for things)

SoonToBeSix · 24/10/2014 20:19

Non tester- we never miss The Apprentice, it's our favourite bit of Autumn.

kateandme · 24/10/2014 21:02

WOULD I LIE TO YOU

Tonkatol · 24/10/2014 21:31

Non Tester - two programmes we all try to watch together - X Factor (Saturday night family night) and also, Paul O'Grady's For the Love of Dogs - it can make us laugh and cry, but we are all addicted.

JessesGirl · 24/10/2014 22:51

1 Did you set up your YouView box yourself? If not, who did?
I did set it up (only adult in the house so there wasn't anybody else to do it)

2 How easy did you find it to set up your YouView box?
The actual plugging in part was extremely easy and took me less than five minutes. The set-up once the box was turned on was very easy as well although took a little longer, what with having to tune the channels etc.

3 How long did it take you to understand how to use YouView?
Not long at all, once I had played around with the menus and found the catch up menus. It is very straightforward to use.

4 Has your child/children used YouView? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?
They are only two so don't really understand how to use the box but it has some great features for them. The catch-up and on demand service is amazing for toddlers because there is so much choice. It was an absolute life saver on Thursday because I had one of the DTs home sick from nursery so I was able to bundle him up in my bed and stick back to back episodes of Peppa Pig on whilst I got on with stuff.

5 Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on YouView so far?
I have enjoyed the catch up service, particularly when I forgot to watch The Apprentice this week Blush

6 Which of the services have you most enjoyed so far?
The catch up on demand service has to be the best feature of this box.

7 Who in your family has used your YouView box the most?
Myself

8 What have you found YouView most useful for so far? Catching up on shows you've missed/ entertaining the kids/finding something to watch to pass time/ watching TV live/ listening to the radio/ search functionality / scrolling back 7 days on the programme guide / using the on demand players or the record functionality?
Entertaining my twins, as explained above and also catching up on things that I missed. I also love being able to just scroll back through the listings and playing a show. I am seriously considering giving up my Sky subscription and this feature is definitely helping to sway my decision.

9 Have you used NOW TV or Sky Store to watch films?
I haven't, I have a subscription to Netflix which I use daily to watch TV series or films. I have tried Now TV in the past but didn't really get on with it.

10 Did you try out the free YouView remote record app?
Yes, another reason why I may junk my Sky subscription, I use the Sky equivilant anyway so it's brilliant that Youview have a version as well.

Thank you so much for choosing me as a tester, this box could potentially save me a lot of money as it is looking to be a very decent alternative to Sky.

LottieAndTheDinosaur · 25/10/2014 17:14

Non-tester. Our DC are a bit young for us all to enjoy a programme together. DP and I rarely watch TV together...the exceptions being Googlebox and The Walking Dead.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 25/10/2014 19:52

Non tester: we watch cbeebies proms all together Wink

My husband and I watch: homeland and downton abbey together

JustScreamNobHurts · 25/10/2014 19:55

The only things we watch as a family are Britain's got Talent and X Factor Blush

Kids & I watch Dr Who and stuff like together though.

(Non tester)

SixImpossible · 25/10/2014 23:06

Right now it's Strictly. Always pre-recorded and watched at a more suitable time.

But I've got a cunning plan: the original Star Trek is being shown, so I'm recording it, too. I will get the dc hooked on it!

halestone · 26/10/2014 01:41

My dad comes round and we always watch Masterchef Austrailia together. Its well better than any other version.

Me and DP always watch A League of their Own together.

And Dd (aged 1) makes sure that together we always watch Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly daily.

With our special addition to our family having arrived earlier this month, finding time to watch tv with my DH can be difficult. We love to sit and watch Doctor Who together but DS1 has decided he doesn't want us to be able to watch it!

We look forward to Autumn as its out time of guilty pleasures TV wise, we watch X Factor, the Apprentice & I'm A Celebrity, although I don't often admit to it!!

We enjoy Strictly Come Dancing together for its music, dancing, costumes and comments
