UK Mumsnetters needed to test TomTom’s top Sat Nav - the GO 5000 worth £259.99 NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 15/09/2014 13:38

We have been asked by the team at TomTom to find 100 UK MNers to try TomTom GO 5000.

We're looking for Mumsnetters who are regular drivers.

TomTom says: "We all know that traffic jams can take seconds to build up and then last for hours. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting in a jam or in slow moving traffic and not knowing how long you will be there. Especially, when your time is tight and you have children to pick up or drop off.

TomTom satnavs know the precise traffic situation on most UK roads at all times, in real time. The satnav you’ll be given to test is a “live device,” this means it is constantly searching every possible route option to find you the fastest route available. So, if the traffic situation suddenly gets bad on your “normal” route, it will automatically search other options to find a new, faster route and give you a new arrive time."

If selected, you'll be sent the TomTom GO 5000 to try for a few weeks and so long as you add feedback as required you will be able to keep the product.

If selected, you will be sent the TomTom GO 5000 at the end of September, and asked to try it for two weeks. You will then need to try it and add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet. At the end of the testing period, we’d also like you to post a review on the Mumsnet review pages and fill in a short survey. In order to keep the product, you would need to add your feedback by the 26th of October, so please only apply if you are able to do this.

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

If you'd like to take part, please add your details here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RKBRB3K

We will be in touch with selected MNers ASAP.

Thanks and good luck!

Tom's voice control is just useless! I turned it on, it said the where do want to go blurb - I said 'school' and it said 'turning map to 3-d and refused to respond further than that! I've given up on VC and will just type it in manually. I find the swipe across menu quite frustrating - 6 or 8 little squares on 1 screen was much more accessible.

ChippingInLatteLover · 13/10/2014 18:41

Betty no, there weren't any in the book, they are all online. I can't help you with that because I can't do the downloads due to a laptop issue. Have you done the downloads?

I can't help with VR because it's not working for me.

Saved places - you need to get to the main menu (tap the ... if you are in map view), 'swipe' the screen to the left, then you can see the 'my places' icon. Tap that and tap the one you want, when it comes up tap the 'steering wheel' (circle on the right of the black bit).

ChippingInLatteLover · 13/10/2014 18:45

Pikke yes, sadly the VR does seem to be crap not functioning well.

I would like to know if you can re-arrange the icons? I would like the 'my places' & 'my routes' on the first scren. Quite happy to have VC & Traffic on the 'need to swipe to see it' screen.

Floralnomad there is a place on the Tom Tom website you can report road closures, changes etc, I sat and did a few the other night (you're not in Southampton are you?!) it's common for roundabouts to be replaced by traffic lights here!!

I'm having trouble getting on to this thread from my ipad and iphone app Sad it's only this thread so I'm wondering if it's protesting about me not using maps for route planning now Hmm

I think I confused it earlier as it set to avoid one set of traffic build up then I started to go towards a different set of traffic build up so not sure where it was going to try and send me but I ignored it as I knew the way I was going was only because of the many sets of traffic lights on that road!

chippingin

Um. No.

I was quite impressed because it worked without reading the instruction manual. I guess this was one of the bits I might have missed.

ChippingInLatteLover · 13/10/2014 19:00

DoctorG I wont mention that I haven't read the manual either Grin Better luck getting it to stay on tomorrow Wine

Floralnomad · 13/10/2014 19:17

Thanks I will get DH to do it when he turns the laptop on later in the week ,and no it's not in Southampton its in Kent ,I was quite surprised it was wrong as it's been like it for ages . I'm getting to grips with the VR now but it does seem to misunderstand me a lot .

ChippingInLatteLover · 13/10/2014 19:23

floral I can't bear shouting at the fecking thing!

CMP69 · 13/10/2014 19:37

The vr works ok but you do have to yell! It will most of the time take you to my places or my routes (where you can keep your favourite ways to go places) if you speak clearly and LOUDLY

ChippingInLatteLover · 13/10/2014 19:39

No CMP mine wont, it really wont.

Floralnomad · 13/10/2014 19:42

I find it works better if you speak normally to it .

AnneEyhtMeyer · 13/10/2014 19:47

I find I have to say "HelloTomTom!" rather than "Hello Tom-Tom". It doesn't seem to respond if it is said as several words.

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 13/10/2014 19:50

Chipping I have the same problem with trying to sort a route.

If I want to set a route from where I work to my mum's for example, I click on use this as start point but it actually used my house as the starting point, then making my work place a way point!? I've tried it several times but can't make it do anything else so I gave up. Am I being a complete numpty, TomTom?

bamblolo · 13/10/2014 20:05

My TomTom 5000 finally arrived today. I was so excited to use it went on three little trips near my home. Was quite easy to set up one of the routes didn't go as expected but I knew where I was going. Cant wait to test it on school run tomorrow and my work run.

Pikkewyn · 13/10/2014 20:10

It hates my voice - I can yell/speak/whisper, have the radio on or off, silence the kids with threats or make them yell at the stupid thing and still it won't respond to Hello TomTom or Hi TomTom or HelloTomTom and understandably - youstupidFingTomtomjustdoasIbloody ask!

As a total aside it has my road name wrong too - no wonder no one can ever find our house in the the middle of a well established neighbour hood in the middle of a town mentioned in the Doomsday Book (so not exactly a 'new' town development)!

ChippingInLatteLover · 13/10/2014 20:23

Oh floral I have tried - it even self adjusted the volume the other day, but it just doesn't activate?!

Anne that bit I find ok, it's literally everything after that! Grin

LooksLike we must be doing something wrong, but no idea what Confused

Pike it has my road name wrong too TomTom posted a link earlier to inform them of that kind of thing, might be a good idea if you can muster up the energy!

SarahSnail · 13/10/2014 20:31

Love this TomTom, I haven't had any problems what so ever with the voice controls and its so easy to jump in the car and tell it where I want to go.
Not to sure on the traffic updates yet though....... seems it thought it was easier to keep me stuck in M1 traffic for an hour and half this morning rather than suggest another route?? so I don't know how the traffic updates are meant to work.

ChippingInLatteLover · 13/10/2014 20:33

SarahSnail can you just use a normal volume voice? What 'accent' do you have? I'm Envy

Have you turned the 'Traffic' bit on?

Pikkewyn · 13/10/2014 20:36

Have mailed them about it. Not sure they can help with the voice thing though.

SarahSnail · 13/10/2014 20:39

I just use normal voice, I don't shout at it.
I've got a northern accent so it must like the common sounding ladies ....lol.

yeah I'm sure I've turned on the traffic updates, but it may be because it wasn't an accident and was just heavy traffic that it didn't want to tell me... i'll see if the same happens again tomorrow morning.

I do get messages quite a lot saying it has found another route for me to take when I am already on a route that it has planned as the fastest route????

ChippingInLatteLover · 13/10/2014 20:55

SS I have northern roots - I can muster up a bit of 'common' - will try that tomorrow! Grin

As for the 'faster route' thing... I presume you aren't hitting any traffic on the original route?

BettyMoody · 13/10/2014 21:06

I have a quite posh clear voice (I use for work so its def clear ) no dice

alemci · 13/10/2014 21:11

yes it seems to be less responsive if i use my telephone voice. .

lougle · 13/10/2014 22:19

Today the TomTom stated incorrect speed limits in three zones along a particular road, so I could have got a speeding ticket if I'd relied on it for my speed. I'll have to let them know that they haven't updated that area (the speed limits changed last year when road works were done).
