UK Mumsnetters needed to test TomTom’s top Sat Nav - the GO 5000 worth £259.99 NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 15/09/2014 13:38

We have been asked by the team at TomTom to find 100 UK MNers to try TomTom GO 5000.

We're looking for Mumsnetters who are regular drivers.

TomTom says: "We all know that traffic jams can take seconds to build up and then last for hours. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting in a jam or in slow moving traffic and not knowing how long you will be there. Especially, when your time is tight and you have children to pick up or drop off.

TomTom satnavs know the precise traffic situation on most UK roads at all times, in real time. The satnav you’ll be given to test is a “live device,” this means it is constantly searching every possible route option to find you the fastest route available. So, if the traffic situation suddenly gets bad on your “normal” route, it will automatically search other options to find a new, faster route and give you a new arrive time."

If selected, you'll be sent the TomTom GO 5000 to try for a few weeks and so long as you add feedback as required you will be able to keep the product.

If selected, you will be sent the TomTom GO 5000 at the end of September, and asked to try it for two weeks. You will then need to try it and add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet. At the end of the testing period, we’d also like you to post a review on the Mumsnet review pages and fill in a short survey. In order to keep the product, you would need to add your feedback by the 26th of October, so please only apply if you are able to do this.

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

If you'd like to take part, please add your details here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RKBRB3K

We will be in touch with selected MNers ASAP.

Thanks and good luck!

The voice recognition is too fussy, Imo. For instance, we said 'go to an address'. She recognised the address and gave us a list of options, saying 'say the number on the list'. We said 'one', which she didn't recognise. After a lot of fiddling, we realised that she wouldn't recognise it unless we said 'number one'.

lougle · 12/10/2014 07:58

Talking of Scotland, I wonder why there is no voice with a Scottish accent? That would have been a nice option.

MimsyBorogroves · 12/10/2014 08:57

Should the voice recognition work from the main (map?) screen if you say 'hey/hello/whatever Tomtom?" Or do you have to go to the voice control bit on the main menu? I'd assumed it was from the map screen but she completely ignores me. The function is definitely activated, and she vaguely understands me unlike Siri when I go into it from the menu and talk to her there, but I had expected that it would just work from the map. Or have i made a tit of myself as usual?

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 09:07

Oh Loogle I would have liked that :) Are you talking about in 'voices' or 'languages' though? (both would have been good!).

I'm glad I'm not the only one living on the 'holder on the windscreen' edge! :)

Floralnomad · 12/10/2014 10:11

The VR works from the map screens - or it does if Serena likes you enough to talk to you at all .

chickensandbees · 12/10/2014 10:35

If your computer doesn't recognise it you need to install drivers. Find the TomTom in your computer panel and click on it.

chickensandbees · 12/10/2014 10:40

I'm leaving the holder on the screen to.

ilovemonstersinc · 12/10/2014 10:52

Ive not updated it atm and im quite happy with what im getting.

Buuut for 249.99 I would have liked for the vr to work properly all the time and the 3d maps be complete not just a few buildings from thr street (still handy though)

ilovemonstersinc · 12/10/2014 10:53

Sorry 259.99

alemci · 12/10/2014 11:54

went on a journey today and found it difficult to put in end destination ready and then for sat nav to acknowledge it. a small start up booklet would really help.

whoops · 12/10/2014 19:14

just put my laptop on and its telling me there is another 2 updates! I thought there was just 4 a year but thats 6 now in less than a week!

Sparklingbrook · 12/10/2014 19:19

DH took it out today to find a faraway footy ground with Ds1. He liked Serena telling him the names of the roads. DH hates having anything on the windscreen though, he can't even have a car park ticket's reflection as he's driving. So the satnav sat in the cupholder, and he just listened.

VeryStressedMum · 12/10/2014 19:37

I don't have anything in 3D on my screen, I thought I'd see 3D buildings or something...does this work in all areas or just places like London?

VeryStressedMum · 12/10/2014 19:38

Also, it doesn't tell me what lane I should be in even when I was on a 3 lane road does everyone else's do that?

CMP69 · 12/10/2014 19:39

Whoops I think you are only "allowed" 4 free updates per year so don't keep plugging it in to your computer as you may use them all up un a week

lougle · 12/10/2014 20:07

No, it's at least 4:
"Get a lifetime of free updates
If you buy a new TomTom GPS device or smartphone app which includes FREE Lifetime Maps, for the life of your product you can download 4 or more full updates of your map every year. You will receive all updates to the road network, addresses, and Points of Interest." www.tomtom.com/en_us/maps/lifetime-map-updates/

whoops · 12/10/2014 20:14

Thanks Lougle I didn't think we'd be charged for updates! it was the community maps and speed cameras that updated this time thinking about it

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 20:31

Poor Tom didn't get out today, I feel neglectful. Though he will get a ride out tomorrow, to at least one place he hasn't been yet. Might even try to buy him a new case to make up for the lack of excitement.

VSM The lane thing I didn't notice, I'll have a look tomorrow and let you know. As for the 3d, I haven't had a single 3d thing yet?? I thought it was people mixing up 2d/3g etc so I just let it float on past me... I wonder when we'll get a glimpse of that Grin

CMP69 · 12/10/2014 20:34

Cheers Lougle that makes it clear perhaps I should read stuff on the website/manual

Sparklingbrook · 12/10/2014 20:39

It's a bit like having a very expensive class bear isn't it? Grin

lougle · 12/10/2014 20:47

no, it's not you. There are pages on the web that say 'up to 4' about different models.

IAmAPaleontologist · 12/10/2014 20:57

tom tom really landed on a bad day with me. If he'd landed a day earlier he could have had 3 trips to work and seen if there was a quicker way through the night time road closure but he didn't. so he hasn't been out yet. However on Tuesday he will get to direct me to a place i have never been before and have not managed to locate on Google street view and then will take me to work and back the rest of the week. Sadly the night time closures are finished so he won't get to have fun with those.

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 12/10/2014 21:16

Wine in case you need it.

Grin Sparkling Do you think we need to start posting pictures of TomTom at various tourist destinations?

Mine has shown me which lane to get into, but only for motorway junctions. Seems to get a bit confused with flyovers as well unless it just really didn't want me to go shopping to Brent Cross and I can't blame it for that

Only time mine's been off 3D is because stupid Serena didn't hear what I was saying and switched to 2D. I'm yet to see much of a difference...

Allisgood1 · 12/10/2014 21:17

Serena doesn't tell me road names. How do I set that up? I looked in settings but there wasn't an option for this. In other news, I think she needs a hearing aid and I'm tired of shouting at her.

Sparklingbrook · 12/10/2014 21:25

YY Looks. Tom Tom on the beach in a 'kiss me quick' hat, TomTom up the Blackpool Tower. See-I took him places! Grin
