UK Mumsnetters needed to test TomTom’s top Sat Nav - the GO 5000 worth £259.99 NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 15/09/2014 13:38

We have been asked by the team at TomTom to find 100 UK MNers to try TomTom GO 5000.

We're looking for Mumsnetters who are regular drivers.

TomTom says: "We all know that traffic jams can take seconds to build up and then last for hours. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting in a jam or in slow moving traffic and not knowing how long you will be there. Especially, when your time is tight and you have children to pick up or drop off.

TomTom satnavs know the precise traffic situation on most UK roads at all times, in real time. The satnav you’ll be given to test is a “live device,” this means it is constantly searching every possible route option to find you the fastest route available. So, if the traffic situation suddenly gets bad on your “normal” route, it will automatically search other options to find a new, faster route and give you a new arrive time."

If selected, you'll be sent the TomTom GO 5000 to try for a few weeks and so long as you add feedback as required you will be able to keep the product.

If selected, you will be sent the TomTom GO 5000 at the end of September, and asked to try it for two weeks. You will then need to try it and add feedback to a thread on Mumsnet. At the end of the testing period, we’d also like you to post a review on the Mumsnet review pages and fill in a short survey. In order to keep the product, you would need to add your feedback by the 26th of October, so please only apply if you are able to do this.

Please also note that TomTom may use your anonymous feedback comments on their website and social media channels, as well as elsewhere.

If you'd like to take part, please add your details here: www.surveymonkey.com/s/RKBRB3K

We will be in touch with selected MNers ASAP.

Thanks and good luck!

I used mine for the first time, and love the mapping. Much clearer than my old tomtom or the Minis built in Sat Nav, and I love the progress bar. Seems stuck very firmly to the windscreen, and it knew where there was congestion accurately.

It talks to me nicely, but ds is disappointed that it doesn't respond so well to him.

The bit where it doesn't keep telling you to turn round etc when you've reached your destination is great as its a bugbear of mine

MimsyBorogroves · 10/10/2014 22:03

Am really liking mine, but agreed that getting the charger into the screen holder is a pain in the arse. I like the fact the holder actually sticks, though - my old sat nav used to fall off 15 minutes into a drive.

Chipping - depending where you live (perhaps), a word of warning on leaving the holder attached to your windscreen. I used to do that 3 years ago with my old tomtom. Went to my car one morning and found passenger window smashed, glove box emptied and contents smashed up and the inside of the car wrecked. Someone had seen the holder on the screen and assumed the nav was still in the car - apparently a lot of people still leave them in the glove box. As the GO has a new-fangled holder, it may make your car more of a target with it on display...

bluebump · 10/10/2014 22:19

I like that it tells you the names of the roads. As someone who can't judge distances when I borrowed a sat nav before and it says "turn left at 300 yards/metres" or whatever it measures in I would be glued to the sat nav until I saw it turn on the screen and i'd do the same - now I can look for a road name too.

noisytoys · 10/10/2014 23:05

Love that we won this. It's my first ever sat nav. A nice upgrade from the AA road map. I like that it gave a new route to work and school. Going nearly the length of the country with it in half term can't wait to see if it's up for the challenge Smile

lilyloo · 11/10/2014 14:07

Used it for the first time yesterday. Didn't try voice control and not linked it up for the traffic yet.
First impressions were very good compared to our ancient sat nav.
The screen seems crystal clear. It was really easy to use and particularly liked the petrol station alerts.
Going to link it up and go out for a run with it later.

Well I have had a play with mine this morning (just at home not been in the car yet) and I seem to have successfully put a few destinations in but when I have tried to plug it in to the computer it doesn't come up. Nothing happens. At all. I think the USB is working as when I unplug it warns me that I've unplugged the power source but I can't get it to connect to the computer Hmm.

I have downloaded/installed that mydrive thing so I hav the little icon but it just says "connect a navigation device" Same when I go on the website. But nothing happens when I do connect my bloody navigation device!

Any suggestions? I have e-mailed customer service too.

My computer is a bit on the old side but I have checked against the specs and it is a version of windows that supports it.

DurhamDurham · 11/10/2014 15:02

I'm having the same problem, nothing happens when I plug it into the computer. Tried my computer at work and at home.

IAmAPaleontologist · 11/10/2014 15:05
Shock

It is a conspiracy to avoid us updating the maps and attempting to leave the North East isn't it!

CMP69 · 11/10/2014 15:55

Mine updated fine but took about 15 hours! On the upside it navigated me in and out of the badlands of Easington Lane last night. Everyone unscathed Wink

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 11/10/2014 16:14

Got completely confused at Brent Cross Hmm Showed a lane going off to left and our route staying on the main road when it actually wanted us to go left. Took ages to pick up satellite today as well.

Serena is clearly having a bad day maybe it's because she couldn't get on to Mumsnet

nicename · 11/10/2014 16:35

I've used ours twice now. I didn't charge it properly/didnt switch it off properly so when I went to use it, thje battery was very low.

I plotted both the routes I needed at home and drove without the satnav with me but using the routes. It was very accurate in terms of driving times (one minute out on one as DS smugly noted).

I have found the instructions not great - I know everything is online these days but I still like to have a small booklet in case I get stuck.

Good that the charger fits into the back of my phone charger.

nicename · 11/10/2014 16:36

And the voice activation hates me! I can only get it to understand numbers!

iwantavuvezela · 11/10/2014 16:42

Just got mine out the box, going to start it up to use later and tomorrow. Reading thread with interest as getting lots of tips on how to use it! I had the same feeling when I got my iPad, took me half a day to work up the courage to open it, worried I wouldn't be able to work out the technology! Looking forward to getting it started as out old one takes about 10 mins to find the satellite if it does, will report back tomorrow.

CMOTDibbler · 11/10/2014 17:35

Mine behaved beautifully today on a cross country journey where there is a huge number of possible routes. I particularly like the road names as it makes junctions so much more certain, and marking side roads you aren't turning down makes me feel like I know whats going on.

DurhamDurham · 11/10/2014 17:53

IAmAPaleontologist As if we would want to!! Grin

ilovemonstersinc · 11/10/2014 18:54

Took mine out today. Absolutely love how streets are displayed so clearly. Even picked up on the park that dh noticed was all green on tomtom
love how its 3d.

The voice recognition didn't work too wel and felt a complete tit talking to it. Dh sat and laughed Hmm

I like how the charger can be used for other things too.

ChippingInLatteLover · 11/10/2014 19:32

Well, the VR is not working for me At All. All kinds of problems with it.

Had the 'completely unresponsive thing' again today.

What's everyone else doing with their holder? Are you all taking it on and off twenty million times a day?

(Mimsy, I can see what you are saying, but honest to god, if I have to put it on and off all the time I will lose my mind and as someone else said (or it might have been you?!) you will see all the marks anyway!...??)

Floralnomad · 11/10/2014 20:14

I'm leaving the holder on the windscreen ,risk taker that I am . We had a slight issue today when the whole thing froze and we couldn't get it to do anything at all ,even switch off ,but I seem to have cured it . The VR is still a bit hit and miss but overall I am very happy with it .

I'm leaving it on the windscreen too. Unless you are going to clean your windscreen every time as well, they will see the tell tale ring mark so makes no difference to me!

VR seems to work really well if it's not on the holder, not so well when it's on.

Wish it took slightly less time to get going, think that's just sat navs. Although the in car ones I've had have always been faster Hmm

alemci · 11/10/2014 20:32

yes it's a worry.

whoops · 11/10/2014 21:28

Another risk taker here! I'm leaving my holder on the screen too! I've had a phone holder on show on my window too for yonks so far all has been ok.
I'm not liking the voice recognition except for telling it to go home, whenever I try to get it to take me to an address it usually tries to send me to Ireland or a remote island somewhere maybe I should take the hint

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 11/10/2014 21:50

Same here whoops, the voice recognition struggles with our random names and pronunciation in NE Scotland. It just can't understand place names, and when Serena reads out names to me, she's pronouncing them all wrong.
