Flora Buttery product test feedback thread - £200 John Lewis voucher to be won

AngelieMumsnet · 05/12/2013 13:08

This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who are taking part in the Flora Buttery challenge.

Here's what Flora have to say, "Lovingly blended for a flavoursome buttery taste, Flora Buttery has a splash of buttermilk mixed in with our natural sunflower goodness. Buttery is super easy to spread and that also means that it's magic for mixing, especially when baking with the kids - it's super for special cakes or every day cupcakes alike, and also makes a mean icing! Check out our website for some recipes that we know will soon become super-speedy family favourites.

Why not find out if you're a better baker with Flora Buttery?"

Testers were given a voucher to buy Flora Buttery.

We've got a set of questions we'd like you to answer about using Flora Buttery, but please also feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  • What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?
  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?
  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?
  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?
  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

All testers who leave their feedback on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?
Block butter or Lurpack spreadable

  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

Seemed pretty easy to use, soft and was easy to blend
  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

meh, didn't grab me as something special.
  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

Seemed a bit more "manufactured" and a less natural taste
  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Too manufactured for me
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

I would have no credibility left if I started talking about spreads in conversation!

Sort of glad I'm not the only one not to receive a voucher yet. Have emailed Angelie a couple of times since the initial "ooh it's been delayed" email, but nada.

I know it's only a trial of pretend butter, but it's a bit crap MN that so many haven't received their vouchers.

What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?

Own brand spreads, or branded products eg flora, clover, utterly butterfly if on offer. For baking, I use butter.

How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

Very easy

What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

Liked the taste on crumpets and toast, although not had time to do any baking. It was really easy to spread, and didn't tear the bread up like butter does.

How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

I preferred it to the own brand spread we have been using.

Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, but only if it were on offer.

If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

I did - on Christmas Day. My brother was spreading it on his cheese crackers!

Hi everyone - sorry again to those of you who haven't received your vouchers. The problems in getting the vouchers to you were completely unforeseen, but Flora have assured us they're doing everything they can to get them to you as soon as possible in the new year. Both Flora and us at MNHQ would still like as many of you as possible to take part so please do bear with us if you can. Thanks

What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?
Whatever was on special offer that week that would do, as long as it wasn't Utterly Butterly or similar stuff that comes in yellow tubs. They're all vile.

  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

Liked the little I managed to get of it. DP and children got through three quarters of the tub while I was out! Some of it went into some home-made brownies which tasted fine.
  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

It was nice, but have you changed the recipe? Got some a few months ago when it was on offer, and I'm sure it used to be yummier than it is now.
  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

It was about the same, I'll use it if it's cheaper than Bertolli or one of the ownbrand clones of Bertolli.
  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I'll happily buy it when its BOGOF or otherwise half-price.
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

Yes, I'd certainly tell them it was nicer than the various Yellow Tub stuffs.

No sign of my voucher, so I decided to go ahead and just buy it because we were baking again today & we were out of butter.

  • What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?

Butter (unsalted, basic/own brand or whatever is on offer for baking, Kerrygold softer butter for spreading).

  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

It was easier to beat with sugar to get light & fluffy for baking. Didn't have to remember to leave it out overnight. spread easier than the kerrygold.

  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

Good

  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

I can't say I really noticed any difference in taste after it had been cooked with sugar, vanilla & cinnamon. I think we all prefer the taste of kerrygold.

  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would for cookies if it worked out cheaper than what I currently use. I wouldn't use it for making crackers/cheese biscuits. Not for spreading.

  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

Yes, I think so. It's handy for baking and tastes better than margarine, but not for spreading. I'd still recommend kerrygold softer butter.

What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?
I usually use butter to spread, sometimes margarine to cook/bake.

  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

We used it over christmas and everyone really liked it, especially those who were used to a spread rather than butter.
  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

The flavour was much better than I expected, and it looked more appealing too.
  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

The taste and trexture were very good. Not exactly like butter but a very good substitute.
  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would be very happy to have it as a standby in the fridge, but something still makes me prefer a more vatural and less manufactured spread such as butter - maybe its the plastic tub?
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

I would happily recommend it over other spreads in tubs, but not sure if I would suggest it to those who are die hard butter users.

What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?
I tend to buy what is on offer - my favourite is Bertolli

  • How did you find swapping to Flora Buttery?

Good, I like the taste a lot and it is very versatile, I can use it for everything I need to from spreading to baking.
  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

Very good, we all liked the buttery taste and it spread easily.
  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

Probably a bit nicer as it has a more buttery taste than my usual spreads.
  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I will, I'll probably wait until it's on offer but will happily buy it amongst other spreads
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

Yes, it has a nice taste and is easy to use.

  • What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?

I usually use vegetable oil to make pastry and Tesco's version of lurpak as a spread.

  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

As a spread the flavour was just as good. I didn't like it in the pastry though - too pronouced a flavour.

  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

It was ok but not significantly better. I was hoping to be able to use it for DD who is allergic to dairy. Unfortunately, once I bought it I realised it contains 30% milk.

  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

Taste and texture were similar to Tesco's version of lurpak.

  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

No, I will go back to what I am used to as I'm sure it's cheaper and tastes the same.

  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

No, it wasn't significantly better and therefore I wouldn't recommend it

Maybe but its not really much different to what i use taste wise just more expensive price wise.

  • What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?

To cook usually Stork, maybe butter. To spread always butter.

  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

Ds and dh liked it, ds chiefly because he could spread it without tearing great holes in his bread. Me not so much, clutches butter dish to bosom.

  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

It does look a marginally better colour than Flora original, slightly more natural looking, liked the gold accented tub.

  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

I will not be swopping my butter dish but may well use it in baking as we could not tell any real difference. Ds loved it as he found it far easier to make cakes.

  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I will probably consider purchasing for baking as far easier, cakes seemed fine and texture ok, well as ok as our cakes ever are anyway!

  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

I guess if it was to come up in conversation I might mention it especially if talking baking.
