Flora Buttery product test feedback thread - £200 John Lewis voucher to be won

AngelieMumsnet · 05/12/2013 13:08

This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who are taking part in the Flora Buttery challenge.

Here's what Flora have to say, "Lovingly blended for a flavoursome buttery taste, Flora Buttery has a splash of buttermilk mixed in with our natural sunflower goodness. Buttery is super easy to spread and that also means that it's magic for mixing, especially when baking with the kids - it's super for special cakes or every day cupcakes alike, and also makes a mean icing! Check out our website for some recipes that we know will soon become super-speedy family favourites.

Why not find out if you're a better baker with Flora Buttery?"

Testers were given a voucher to buy Flora Buttery.

We've got a set of questions we'd like you to answer about using Flora Buttery, but please also feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  • What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?
  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?
  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?
  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?
  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

All testers who leave their feedback on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

I normally use salted butter for baking and some cooking (usually whichever brand or own-brand is on offer as long as it is British).

I rarely spread any marg/butter on bread or toast as I just add jam to toast and put the filling straight in a sandwich with a bit of mustard, mayo or ketchup. If I use anything it is sainsburys light olive spread.

Flora Buttery was easy to spread onto toast and bread but I didn't like the buttery flavour.

I used it once for cooking but it was not as good as butter or oil for this. The flavour was not great and it burned quickly.

I haven't used it for baking yet as I haven't been baking recently.

I won't get it again as I can only see it being good to spread on bread and I don't like the flavour. It is also more expensive than my usual choices. For the same reasons I would not recommend it to friends.

  • What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?

Tesco own brand spread or I cant believe its not butter.

  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

The first thing i noticed is that it tastes a lot nicer!

  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

It tastes really good, it actually tastes like butter but its very light and smooth.

  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

A lot nicer! We were all impressed, and you can even notice the difference when baking with it.

  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, we definitely will :)

  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

It has a great taste!

Firstly, can I say thank you for letting me take part in this challenge? I'm a bit of a butter-fiend but being on a well-known slimming campaign has scuppered me slightly.

Although Flora Buttery is still not great 'penalty'-wise, it is very enjoyable and should be much healthier than my ultimate weakness!

What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?
If I could I'd use butter for everything, but diet and price has meant I haven't been able to enjoy it as much as I would like. As previous posters have mentioned, I usually go for whatever is on offer - at the moment I have Clover Lighter, Vitalite and Trex in my fridge. I usually use Stork in baking, but DD2 has been diagnosed with cow's milk allergy, so I'm trying Trex.

How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?
I really enjoyed it! I used it mostly for spreading; I found it wasn't as salty as the clover, lovely and rich flavour, and spread very easily.

What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?
As above, I enjoyed it! I'd happily switch to it if/when I could afford it.

How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?
Again, as above - nice buttery flavour, not too salty, and spread very easily.

Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I'd like to as I like the product, but to be horribly honest I wouldn't be able to buy it unless it were on offer.

If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?
I would recommend it. I shall be trying it out on my MIL this week - she is the ultimate Cloverphile! I'll let you know what she thinks of it Xmas Wink

Thank you again for the opportunity, good luck everyone, and Merry Christmas to all Xmas Smile

  1. I just used unsalted butter for baking and olive oil for frying and other general cooking. Nothing for spreading.

  1. I was a bit sceptical about using it to bake but it actually worked really well and it's much easier to mix cake ingredients. I didn't like using it as much for frying as I'm not so keen on having my food taste of butter.

  1. A good butter substitute.

  1. I thought it was very good: like butter but spreadable. It melted very quickly for frying.

  1. Probably not as it's more expensive than what I normally use. I'd consider it if I was going to use something for spreading though.

  1. Yes, if it came up in conversation.

What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge? Supermarket own marg with a buttery pun in the name (not loyal to a particular supermarket - just bad puns) and sometime the really cheap supermarket own marg
How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc? DS (8)didn't like it as spread. He saw it and said 'That's the one with the weird advert' (oops) then tasted it and said this butter tastes funny. I thought it tasted like marg - not like butter at all. Made 2 cakes one with flora and one with cheap cooking marg - they tasted the same.
What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery- Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? we didn't like it - it's easier to have one spread in the fridge for eating and baking (we do eat what we bake but you know what I mean!!!)
If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not? No - we don't recommend things we don't like.

What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?

Supermarket butter for all.

How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

Makes lunch boxes are infinitely easier in the morning! And children didn't notice and seem happy.

What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

Quite yellow! Like a cross between butter and marg (I don't like marg)

How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

More oily than butter, but taste generally fine. Prefer real butter for eg hot cross buns or scones, but really good for sandwiches. And I use less than butter because it's easier to spread.

Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, am going to continue to buy it for sandwiches, but won't stop buying butter completely.

If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

Yes, I suppose so.

  • What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?

Butter for baking, usually Clover for spreading
  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

easy, well for spreading anyway. Have only baked with it the once, but that was easy too.
  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

It's good. I dislike the smell of spread generally, but this doesn't seem to have that. The colour is appealing too, and we all like the taste.
  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

Compares well. Much easier to spread - doesn't tear up the bread straight out of the fridge. Taste has been well received by all.
  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, though I'm often led by supermarket offers. If it's a good price, I'd buy it!
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

YeS I would. That said though, it's not often something I talk about!

We've got a set of questions we'd like you to answer about using Flora Buttery, but please also feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  • What did you use to cook/spread/bake with before this challenge?

lots of different things - generally use stork or real butter for baking and aldi version of lurpack (Norpack?) for spreading, but if i run out and am not off to aldi whatever spread is on offer/ supermarket own.
  • How did you find swopping to Flora Buttery?

Very easy
  • What was your overall impression of Flora Buttery?

It did not stand out as ay different from the others. To me it tasted ver like margarine, and I prefer real butter/norpack
  • How did the overall taste and texture of Flora Buttery compare to that of your usual butter/margarine/oil etc?

As above - it did not stand out.
  • Do you think you'll be likely to continue using Flora Buttery in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? be tempted but if not I would not pay the extra.

If it's on offer I may
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

Not specially. Does not have anything to offer over more competitively priced alternatives.

I usually use Aldi butter or spread , or whatever is on offer in the other Supermarkets.

I found it very easy to swap.

Overall I liked it, as it was so soft I wasn't sure about using it for cakes but after seeing comments on here I will try it.

I liked the taste and texture. DH was especially impressed with the texture as it was so easy to spread on the sandwiches. It tasted quite buttery and was especially nice on hot toast.

I would definitely purchase it when it was on special offer and I would recommend it to others.
