We've been asked by the team at Samsung to find 20 (v lucky) MNers to try out its latest handset - the Galaxy S4 Active and to add feedback on Mumsnet.

Samsung says "We think this new handset would be great for parents. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is specifically designed to handle all aspects of modern family life - including

~ the great outdoors - with a fully sealed design that provides great protection from dust and water - you can even use the device to shoot photos and video underwater, with your results optimised by the new Aqua Mode.

~ everyday family life - we'd love you to report back on how the handset withstands your general day to day life with a child we'll be asking testers to 'allow' it to be dropped on the floor, 'eaten' by your LOs, and even 'accidentally' dropped in the bath/ (clean) loo to demonstrate how well it copes with modern family life.

~ looks and functionality - the Galaxy S4 Active also shares the Galaxy S4s slick design and useful smart services, so you can enjoy the same great style and convenience"

Full tech spec here

This new handset will be supplied unlocked for use on any network (just insert your sim) - the costs of calls/ texts/ data must be borne by testers. The handset retails for c£400 Grin.

If you're selected to take part you'll be asked to try out the handset (including some challenges!) and to add feedback at least twice on Mumsnet - we'll be looking for first impressions as well as some follow up feedback after a couple of weeks.

We'll also need you to add a review to the MN smartphones review pages
and on the Samsung pages

If you'd like to take part and can commit to adding feedback as above please add your details here

We'll be in touch with those selected asap

thanks and good luck

Yes telly shows what's on phone! It helps
that we have a Samsung TV and bluray player, but I think you can do it with others.

Can't help with the fiddly bits I'm afraid, but I have just typed this entire post by dragging my finger across the keyboard rather than typing each letter. Faster MNing here I come!

I'm going to get a case for mine as well, I assumed my s4 case would fit but this one is ever so slightly bigger. I like the actual buttons on the bottom - on the normal s4 the two sides buttons are touch sensitive and I was always accidentally brushing them!

Right then, I have most of my usual apps sorted, I've got rid of most of the annoying screens and I've got my sim chopped and inserted and I've set the mobile data limit. I like how it will completely stop me once I hit the limit so no nasty bill surprised :)

Where is the button thing for turning autosynch on and off? I seem to have more options now I've got a sim in but I can't find the button again! Slowly learning my way round it. It is a bit of a beast!

The blokes in the 02 shop this morning were drooling a little and asking me how I'd got my hands on one already Grin. One of them pointed out that I can take it in the bath. Woohoo! I no longer need to risk my kindle, kindle app downloaded, looks beautiful on this phone. I might just have to test it out tonight.

Need to play with the camera so I can have some photos for my wallpaper now!

Well I have got it and it is great! Everyone here has had a go of it and have just got my hands on it!! Have taken some photos with it and made an album with it and downloaded a game which the kids have played with.

phone feels big and quite weighty but stable like a tablet. Screen size is good and have watched a few utube videos and the quality is good. Will go to phone shop tomorrow to see if can get a case for it as it still seems like it could scratch ir break! Havent dropped it yet or put in water.

Mine still hasn't arrived ! Away to email Katie Mumsnet to check everything ok- I am a teeny bit scared now that there has been some mistake and actually I am not getting to review the phone.
I have been drooling over youtube ads for the phone and picking out cases and everything! sob!

I've just started playing with it - it's huge and gorgeous! Love the brushed steel look, and the slightly more intuitive and less know-it-all autocorrect function!

It'll take me a while to get used to it!

can't use mine yet or my old phone as the sim takes 24 hours to work.

want to set a password.

also realised that I can use my own wi fi provider at home so probably won't run up a huge net bill.

Mine arrived on Friday, so I've been getting to grips with it this weekend, and even dared to let the children get their grubby little paws on it. I was on MN in the bath last night Shock.

First impressions are that it doesn't really feel any different to my old smart phone - I was expecting something massively bulky, with a huge rubber pad surrounding it. I'm pleasantly surprised that it's just a phone, not something that I'd expect a builder to have to keep cement dust out (does that make sense to anyone but me?!).

Lovely and easy to work out even though I've never had a Samsung phone. I had a small sim card in my old phone so no problems there, and contacts seem to have moved with it. Children are all over it and have 'helpfully' changed some settings to make it better. We shall see...

Oh yes, and DH is silently, but very obviously, jealous of it. I usually have to make do with his old phones when he gets an upgrade, but now I'm the one with a whizzy little toy Grin

Well- I still haven't got mine...but I know where it is now -phew!

Post office said they tried to deliver it on Friday and left a card through the door to re arrange a delivery etc.
They never did the buggers as I purposely stayed in all Friday in anticipation of the delivery and even made the poor dc's walk home from school themselves.
Anyway phoned the depot today -the parcel has been sitting there since Friday and they will redeliver it tomorrow -so hopefully by the time I get it and get my micro Sim -I will be up and fully running by Wed eve/Thurs-almost a week behind everyone but looking forward to catching up !

Has anybody tried taking pictures underwater yet? I really want to but I'm soooo scared I'll break it!!!

Report
ShatnersBassoon · 04/11/2013 20:46

I haven't, and I'm not sure when I'll want to. No snorkling trips planned, and underwater bath pics would not be fit for human consumption.

You could let the DCs loose with it in the bath with some rubber ducks or something? Or do you have a nice photogenic baby you could borrow to take to the swimming pool?

I have taken mine to work today and used it out and about on site taking photos of the fellas working on site. it rained and I wasnt too bothered about it getting wet!

The photo / camera bit has a few good functions - I have spotted that it does panoramic, so will have a go of that tomorrow and se how well that works. I have taken some photos of my nieces at the weekend and they seem crisp and clear.

I could do with changing the front screen as that picture and text 'life companion' or summat like that, is a tad annoying! need to think what to change it to though.

Downloaded some music as well - sounds good!

Waiting for the challenges to land now!!

Ooh I was trying to find this thread! Mine arrived Friday too. Of course I had forgotten I had entered so not checked my email meaning the first I knew was a random luffly phone arriving with my postman Grin very nice surprise but took me a good 30 minutes to figure out what was going on whilst ds jumped around squeaking it was for him not likely

So far I love it however my keypad seems a tad off, not responding quite right almost a life of its own which got me wondering if we have any warranty with these phones and if so what counts as proof of date of "purchase"? Obviously I am being greedy really but I guess resolution of any issues would form part of any review?

I got my SIM card working and just had a nice long chat with my mom in Germany - excellent, clear line, not loud, not shrill, very easy to understand.

It's amazing how many mobile phones have fantastic features but absolutely suck at being a decent phone, I'm glad this one seems to be the whole package!

Report
magentastardust · 05/11/2013 13:08

Mine has finally arrived! It was addressed to the wrong number which explains why I never got the card through the door and luck was on my side as the postman was off ill today , luckily it was an old one that covered so recognised my name and knew that the parcel should have actually been for my house !
Can't wait to get it up and running tonight when I get a proper chance -first impressions are that it is really big!

has anyone else put any security on theirs. I did a password but it is a pain because it locks constantly so you have to keep putting it in. On my android you don't have to do it so often.

Anyone got any ideas if you could stop this happening

thanks

alemci you can change it so it only locks after a certain amount of time has passed if that's what you mean. Go to Settings> My Device> Lock Screen> Lock Automatically and try changing the time.

androbbob I hate that Life Companion text, it just seems a bit Hmm but I can't think of anything yet to change it too.

Mine dropped Shock Shock accidentally from my bedside unit onto the wooden floor last night but has suffered no ill-effects. It has also been stolen and dribbled on by one of my toddler twins and (fingers crossed) seems absolutely fine!

Well I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised with how much I like this phone! I'm very set in my ways with my iphone lol and the predictive texting on the samsung is taking a lot of getting used to, but I love the bigger screen size, and the picture quality from the camera is amazing :) The signal is no better or worse than on my iphone; still can't use it downstairs in my house, but battery life is far better! Liking it so far :)
