We've been asked by the team at Samsung to find 20 (v lucky) MNers to try out its latest handset - the Galaxy S4 Active and to add feedback on Mumsnet.

Samsung says "We think this new handset would be great for parents. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is specifically designed to handle all aspects of modern family life - including

~ the great outdoors - with a fully sealed design that provides great protection from dust and water - you can even use the device to shoot photos and video underwater, with your results optimised by the new Aqua Mode.

~ everyday family life - we'd love you to report back on how the handset withstands your general day to day life with a child we'll be asking testers to 'allow' it to be dropped on the floor, 'eaten' by your LOs, and even 'accidentally' dropped in the bath/ (clean) loo to demonstrate how well it copes with modern family life.

~ looks and functionality - the Galaxy S4 Active also shares the Galaxy S4s slick design and useful smart services, so you can enjoy the same great style and convenience"

Full tech spec here

This new handset will be supplied unlocked for use on any network (just insert your sim) - the costs of calls/ texts/ data must be borne by testers. The handset retails for c£400 Grin.

If you're selected to take part you'll be asked to try out the handset (including some challenges!) and to add feedback at least twice on Mumsnet - we'll be looking for first impressions as well as some follow up feedback after a couple of weeks.

We'll also need you to add a review to the MN smartphones review pages
and on the Samsung pages

If you'd like to take part and can commit to adding feedback as above please add your details here

We'll be in touch with those selected asap

thanks and good luck

You can cut a normal sim card down with scissors but you do run the risk of damaging the sim card.

BerstieSpotts · 01/11/2013 10:49

As long as you don't cut the chip itself though, and are sure of the shape it needs to be - I think you can get templates online or just use the sim tray itself if it comes out (like on an iPhone) you'll be fine. Be warned, some SIM cards (older ones) have a larger chip about 1cm across. The newer ones have a much smaller chip about 0.5 x 0.7cm. DON'T try to cut the 1cm square ones as they're too big. You need to contact your network to get a new SIM card. I'm not sure when the change was but it was in the past few years, not too recently. Most people will be fine unless you've had the same sim card for years and years and years.

TheYamiOfYawn · 01/11/2013 14:25

Am posting from it. I took my sim to the Three mobile shop and they cut my sim down.

magentastardust · 01/11/2013 14:47

No sign of mine yet! Impatient bah.

DharmaBumpkin · 01/11/2013 14:56

Mine arrived! Hadn't realised I needed a micro sim so now have to wait another 24 whole hours before I can use it though! Soooooo frustrating!

Queen0fFlamingEverything · 01/11/2013 15:12

Mine is here too, I have twitchy fingers but like others need to get my existing sim cut down, plus I want to get an adapter so I can still use it in my current phone if necessary.

Had a wee fiddle with the things it can do without a sim in and OMG it is fancypants Shock

magentastardust · 01/11/2013 15:30

I don't think mine is coming today! I want to play.

MoogDroog · 01/11/2013 15:38

Mine is here! Posting from it now (must stop it doing tappy noise). Missed the delivery but picked it up from sorting office.

Its beautiful! Very big and swanky and I can see myself in a state of confusion for some days whilst I get used to it.

magentastardust · 01/11/2013 15:49

Which courier company was it everyone? I am in North East Scotland which loads of courier companies say is in the highands (it is not at all) so take days to deliver!

Queen0fFlamingEverything · 01/11/2013 16:09

Royal Mail special delivery Smile

magentastardust · 01/11/2013 16:29

Oh that should have come then ! Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

MoogDroog · 01/11/2013 16:42

Don't suppose anyone has sussed out how to get contacts off an iPhone and onto this lovely thing yet?

darksparrow · 01/11/2013 16:54

Mine came Royal Mail special delivery with the normal post man at the usual post delivery time - in a jiffy bag and not massive.

Moon - can you save to your SIM? If not this should help

TheYamiOfYawn · 01/11/2013 17:24

Oooh. It seems very nice indeed. I have spent the afternoon loading up my apps and organising them. I am not convinced that it is as rugged and sturdy as is claimed as it doesn't seem all that different from a standard galaxy apart from the seal, but it is a very nice phone. I like the big keyboard with the numbers.

MoogDroog · 01/11/2013 17:43

I think its going to kill me to drop it in the floor! Its too precious!

I'm still very confused by it, but thats more the ios to android switch I think. I dont cope well with phone adjustments Confused

Excuse the rubbish typing!

emblosion · 01/11/2013 18:03

Mines here! It's SO BEAUTIFUL. I'm another one that has had the same giant sim card forever but the network are posting me out a new one. I'm stamping my feet with impatience to get testing.

I don't know how I will be able to bring myself to drop it either!

Indith · 01/11/2013 19:24

well I may not have my sim in it yet but im sorting out aps and swttings etc over the wireless. sort of fun, sort of frustrating.

emblosion · 01/11/2013 20:29

I'm having a good play over the wireless too. Really love the keyboard and the big screen.

YeahBuddy · 01/11/2013 20:37

Posting from mine now, I don't know how I'm ever going to be able to put it in water though - I'm way too paranoid!!!

MellowMarshmallow · 01/11/2013 21:37

It's so pretty, I'm scared to touch it. I've broken my current phone 3 times in 10 months. Have ordered screen protectors and drop proof case. I know it's meant to be rugged, but if I had spent £400 on a phone, I would be happy to spend another £10 protecting it, so think I am sticking to what a real customer would do.

Queen0fFlamingEverything · 01/11/2013 21:47

Me too Mellow - I've got a boingy rubber case, screen protectors, and a flip case all on the way! Its just so.... shiny.

DP wants me to let him touch it Shock His track record with phones makes me feel it'd be safer in the hands of my 3 yr old (affectionately known as DestructoBoy).

androbbob · 01/11/2013 23:09

Stamps feet with impatience - mine is sitting less than a mile away in the PO sorting office. it opens at 7am in the morning, so I will be there as soon as I can rally the troops! I have a small sim so should be able to just get up and go....can't wait! Also have family up at my parents this weekend and footie match to go to, so will be well tested by little people and rain this weekend.

MoogDroog · 01/11/2013 23:18

Anyone care to do a link the the cases and screen protectors they've got? I get so bamboozled with choice!

Andro - that must be so frustrating. I only just managed to catch the sorting office before it shut.

This phone is amazing. Some of the things it does are magical. The head tilty thing is crazy and I've just managed to get the telly to show what's on phone. Must not tell DS of this and the Angry Bird big screen potential.

MellowMarshmallow · 01/11/2013 23:28

Don't ave links handy. Went for something Knight for screen protectors. Was about £5 when all others just a £1 but didn't want to take any chances. That was on eBay. Got the case from amazon. The Amzer one which was £7.99 which annoyingly meant I'd need to pay p&p so also bought cheap book for DS to remove p&p. chose Amzer case as it had good US reviews. Hope that helps. Have just found out I also need to get micro SIM so will be a few days before I can do first feedback post.

Indith · 02/11/2013 08:02

you can get the telly to show what's on the phone? oh wow! must play more.

can anyone help me out with fiddly bits? it has automatically put the entire contents of my gmail address book as contacts. I don't want that at all, how do I say no to linking them like that? plus on this old phone I could have different things for apps eg I have fb set to only give automatic notifications when on wireless but not on mobile data and gmail to never update emails unless I tell it to. all I can find on new one is to autosynch or not autosynch in general so is it all or nothing or can I do things individually?

going to go sort sim today, also realised am at the end of my contract so good timing!
