This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out the new 2in1 recipe mixes from Schwartz.

Here's what they say: "The new 2in1 range offers two easy to use recipe mix sachets in one handy pack: one sachet flavours the main dish whilst the other contains a seasoning for a complementary side dish or topping. With five different varieties to choose from, and an easy recipe on the back of each pack, this is a great way to try out new dishes or transform an existing family favourite from ordinary to special."

Mumsnetters have been trying the following recipe mixes:

Below are some questions for you to answer but please do feel free to add any other comments you may also have. We'd like you to post at least 3 sets of feedback - answering the same questions for each recipe mix you try. Please also upload any pictures you take of your creations. Please note, photos and comments may be used on Schwartz's pages on Mumsnet and possibly on other marketing material.

I followed the recipe on the back but there was not enough chicken coating :(

I will buy them in the future but not this pack.

I'm on the fence with this one, if there were more chicken coating, I would give it another go.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Garlic & Thyme roast chicken + crispy roast potatoes

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

2.5 out of 5. This was the 3rd recipe mix we tried and was the weakest. Whilst it tasted nice we did not feel the meal was made easier.

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

Overall the flavour was ok but the general opinion in the household was that DH's roast chicken was nicer.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Easy but unnecessary. It was essentially a roast dinner and timing is the most difficult task when preparing a roast.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Followed the recipe but added gravy as we thought it would be a bit dry without. We also added veg.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your meal times easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not really. The meal was similar to a roast dinner and timing is the most difficult task when preparing a roast.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes but not this recipe. It did not work in our household.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

Liked the flavour but found the mix pointless as it did not save us any time,

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Garlic & Thyme Roast Chicken & Crispy Roast Potatoes

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) 1/5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
The roast chicken was pretty bland and the potatoes too did not have much flavour either. The DC's and DH did not even notice anything had been done to it differently and ate theirs without much comment.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
The packets were easy to use.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?I did not add oil to the chicken as I didn't think it was necessary but I followed the potato part exactly.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? No, The flavour would have been better on the chicken with a bit of sea salt and some fresh herbs. I liked the texture of the potatoes but the flavour was again quite bland.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? Definitely not this one. I could have done better myself with basic fresh ingredients, and it didn't enhance the meal enough to make it worth it.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? I was really neutral about this one. The flavour wasn't unpleasant so did not hate it, but there just was no real flavour.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? - Garlic & herb chicken bites and cheese & chive dip
How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) - 3
What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? - I liked it, dh liked it a lot, lo only liked the chicken and didn't eat much of the dip.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? - I used diced chicken rather than strips but other than that I followed the recipe.
Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? About the same as normal but it was nice to try something new.
Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? - Probably not this one, it was nice but nothing I couldn't have done anyway.
Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? - I liked it.

2nd sachet which we had a few nights ago -- baby, toddler, husband, and lodger, plus me. We went for the Southern Chicken and barbecue sauce. I made roast potatoes/potato wedges alongside and also a green salad/cucumber and carrot for children.

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest): 4
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? I wasn't that keen on the chicken coating but my husband and our lodger both liked it. All enjoyed the barbecue sauce.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? Quite simple
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? Followed the recipe
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? I don't normally bread chicken so that was slightly more fiddly then just roasting but it was pretty simple.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? Maybe for a holiday or other event. My beginner cook husband and the lodger both said they liked the idea and it would give them confidence.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? I enjoyed cooking something slightly different than usual. We quite liked the BBQ sauce (though it was similar to other bottled sauces) but I didn't think it was a particularly healthy meal. I made plain breaded chicken for the baby and my toddler son didn't want any breading at all. So overall, a like.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Garlic and Herb Crunchy Bites and Cheese and Herb Dip

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
4.5

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
We liked the chicken but not so much the dip - wish I hadn't added the cheese.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy but I always wish there was more crumb in these things! The last bits are always a bit sparse with the coating!

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Followed exactly.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
My same point about taking away the thinking!

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yep, have had good experiences with them so far!

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Mediterranean chicken pasta + crispy crumb topping

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

I would rate this recipe 3/5

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

The crispy crumb topping was really yummy :D they should sell it on its own but I thought the pasta/chicken mix was a bit tasteless :(

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

This packet was very straight forward and easy to use

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I followed the recipe but I used more cheese

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

yes, this mix was easy to use, most of the ingrediends and store cupboard items

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I will definitely buy them in future but probably not this mix

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

I'm in the middle, loved the topping but not the rest.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Southern style crunchy chicken bites + BBQ dip

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

Right, first of all, the BBQ sauce was great. You could mix the powder with as much tomato ketchup as you wanted to adjust the flavour, and my DD who's 2 doesn't normally like BBQ sauce, but because I could make it slightly more 'tomatoey', she actually liked it.

I found the chicken flavouring a bit bland, but my husband who likes things on the more plain side really enjoyed it.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Really simple!

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I followed the recipe.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not really. It only made it easier in the fact that it made the family's choice for dinner easy because the packet was there and I just needed to buy the chicken (and accompanying veg that I chose).

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, because it makes mealtimes a bit different and I like that it's so easy to prepare.

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

I liked it.

ilovepicnmix · 05/07/2013 10:28

3rd review for me. The chicken tikka. I'd rate it as a 4. I thought it was tasty and flavourful. My son didn't eat it but he's only 1 so the chicken shouldn't take it personally. The recipe was easy to follow and I followed it exactly. It made mealtime easy as the marinade was there for me. It was easy to use but I wouldn't buy this one as not different to something I could do myself. Overall I'd say I liked this one.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Tried both the Southern style crunchy chicken bites + BBQ dip and the Garlic & herb crunchy chicken bites + cheese & chive dip - had a lot of mouths to feed last night and chicken to use up!

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

3 (at best)

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

DS refused to eat it

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Easy to use, just mix powder, egg and chicken and bung in oven

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Followed the recipe although had to use some of our own bbq dip when the ketchup + mix one ran out

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Made it easy in that there was little preparation, difficult in that no-one particularly liked it!

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not this one

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

Disliked tbh - by the time the chicken was cooked (15/20 mins) the mix was still 'soggy', left it a bit longer for the mix to crisp up, by which time the chicken had gone really dry and tough, difficult and a bit unpleasant to then eat.

Followed the recipe

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes because it takes away the thinking and occasional preparation madness I get when preparing a mea!

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, but not this flavour because I didn't really like the dip.

It was ok.

Very easy to use

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I did the suggestion of using tuna and sweetcorn as we were a bit fed up with chicken!

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

No as I could have made it just as easily without the packet.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not this one - if I buy a packet I want it to do something different from what I do usually.

I tried the southern fried chicken bites with BBQ sauce and the garlic and herb bites with cheese dip in the same night( big family) the dips went down really well but I didn't have any natural yoghurt so used sour cream instead and it was lovely. Dh prepared dips and were very easy, dd2 and I dipped the chicken. I fOund the garlic and herb one a bit bland and the southern fried one nice but a bit colourful. I'd buy again but would like it to serve more. I'm struggling to use them because they serve only 4. I would definitely buy the dip ones again.

maybe other packets. I do think they are all a bit samey though

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 05/07/2013 12:13

We tried the crunchy chicken bites and BBQ dip - we would rate it as a 3/5.
DH and I thought the chicken coating quite bland but DS, who won't normally eat 'whole chicken', scoffed them up. He wouldn't try the dip but we liked it - although thought the salt content really quite high.
Very easy to use and followed the recipe.
Made no difference to the ease of mealtimes IMO.
May consider buying it again as DS liked it.
Overall, we liked it.

i was slightly alarmed by the bright orange Southern fried mix- looking on the ingredients the colouring came from the tumeric! The Garlic and Herb was not liked by anyone in the family!- tasted dry and dusty- maybe this would have been better fried in olive oil. But I did like that they were supposed to be oven baked.
