Warburtons have launched two new products - Square(ish) Wraps and Sandwich Thins and they're looking for 30 Mumsnetters to sign up to try them and come up with some [hopefully!] exciting recipes. Here's what Warburtons say about the two products:

"We've created Square(ish) Wraps and Sandwich Thins - top, roll or fold our Square(ish) Wraps with your favourite hot or cold fillings to create tasty lunchtime options or quick and easy suppers to keep the whole family happy. Warburtons Sandwich Thins are the new 'skinny' bread on the block and can be topped, filled or toasted with whatever takes your fancy. With 100 calories per Thin, they are ideal as a light lunchtime option."

For more information about the products, including nutritional and allergy information, please click here.

Warburtons would like testers to come up with recipes using the products, post them on a feedback thread on Mumsnet and then email us photos of your creations for possible use on the Warburtons page on Mumsnet (coming soon!). Selected testers will be sent a hamper containing the two products, shopping vouchers to buy ingredients for their recipes and a few other goodies.

The best recipes will then be chosen to feature on the Warburtons page on Mumsnet and all those who submit a recipe and photo will be entered into a competition to win an adventure weekend at a UK theme park for their family. All testers who put a recipe on the thread (as well as any other feedback they want to give about the products) will also be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 voucher for M&S.

This product test is open to all UK Mumsnetters who are available to take part in the next couple of weeks. If you are selected for this project, the hampers will be sent out next week and we'd like testers to use the product and tell us about their recipes in the next week or two.

If you are interested in taking part please sign up here.

Thanks
MNHQ

Ah I had that last week Bumper - log out and log back in, it seems to fix itself.

whomovedmychocolate · 11/03/2011 19:31

Right I've tried both now. I am not very keen on the sandwich thins, they don't toast properly and taste a bit odd. Sort of plasticky and bland. But they do seem quite salty too. Perhaps it's just not the sort of bread I'm used to. In terms of appearance they look like diet panini (note I am told a panino is a single one of these) and as such, deeply unsatisfying because it's not a proper big one.

However the kids say they liked them. So thumbs up from them. We have discovered that they are quite sponge like and you can grate chocolate over them and then put them under the grill not in the toaster and the chocolate becomes part of the bread and is quite nice. But they still don't become like proper toast. I was hoping I could use them to make little garlic breads with cheese for the kids, but I don't think they'll go crispy enough and I do have a super dooper oven which cooks at 250, but they didn't respond as I'd expect regular bread too.

The wraps though have a nice texture and taste, I like the texture of the outside best, it's both smooth and lumpy which helps it work with the filling. The are certainly not square and the shape is perfect for little people to fill up because they understand straight lines and we did it by pretending it was a piece of paper and they were drawing patterns with food fillings A la Big Cook Little Cook. I would say that the main advantage is that they are under less pressure to unroll because they don't have the tapered sides you get with round wraps - though tip for those who are trying them for lunchboxes, make up a tiny amount of flour paste with water in an eggcup to seal them and keep them sealed for lunchtime.

DD suggested that you could get one of those teddy bear meat slices (I don't know what the hell they are - they are lurid pink and probably made from pigs eyelashes but anyway - and create a Postman pat style envelope with the wrap with the teddy bear inside Grin (note this is a child who systematically separates all foods and eats them in order of preference, including deconstructing sandwiches prior to eating!)

Lovesdogsandcats · 11/03/2011 20:09

Got my box today Grin

Lovely touch, to add the little book and a card to buy the ingredients with, thank you!

I made pizzas tonight with the square wraps, they were really tasty :)

Made one vegan pizza and one ham pizza:

Vegan Pizza

Place one wrap on a baking tray, top with finely chopped tomatoes. Sprinkle a chopped garlic clove over the tomato topping. Add sliced chestnut mushrooms, sliced roasted red peppers, capers and slices of Cheezly vegan cheese. Just before cooking drizzle some extra virgin olive oil all over.

Cook at 200 degrees for about 15 minutes or until it looks done.

Ham and Cheddar Cheese Pizza

Place one wrap on a baking tray, top with finely chopped tomatoes. Sprinkle a chopped garlic clove over the tomato topping. Add slices of wafer thin ham, capers and grated cheddar cheese.Just before cooking drizzle some extra virgin olive oil all over.

Cook at 200 degrees for about 15 minutes or until it looks done.

Serve pizza with a large green salad.

I will definately make pizza using these wraps again, it is such a quick and easy meal.

Will do toasted sandwiches tomorrow with the sandwich thins - thinking of slicing them in half, and filling them with mushrooms and cheese/Cheezly vegan cheese and grilling on the George Foreman :)

whomovedmychocolate · 11/03/2011 20:18

You may have to spray them with oil to get them going on the Foreman grill Lovesdogsandcats. :) Sounds nice though.

PigeonStreet · 11/03/2011 21:08

Well, once I got over the suprise parcel we devoured half the packet of sandwich thins and two of the square(ish) wraps.

We had; cheese sandwich eggy bread.
Make a cheese sandwich as usual (with or without pickle) and then dip in beaten egg. Fry gently in a fryng pan with olive oil for three minutes each side on a medium heat. DD who is a fussy thing, woofed this down in one, dipped in ketchup of course Wink.

DH had:
Super stack sandwich. Butter 2 sandwich thins including the bottom of one and top of the other. Spread soft cheese on the bottom slice and top with rocket, spinach and watercress salad, on the next layer put crispy bacon and finish the last layer with sliced tomatoes and cucumber. Press down and eat!

We really liked the thins as the ratio of fillings to bread is a lot more palatable.

With the square ish wraps we cut them in four, toasted and used hot for dipping in houmous and soft cheese, or cold like a cracker with cheese on. I will email photos tomorrow.

Lovesdogsandcats · 11/03/2011 21:56

whomovedmychocolate thanks for the tip, will do that :)
I saw some spray oil in Aldi yesterday, should have bought it!
Will have to use spread until i go shopping for the spray.

Blatherskite · 12/03/2011 12:41

Just tried one of the Squarish wraps. Had my favourite Saturday afternoon hangover cure (No hangover here though as I have tonsillitis and am on antibiotics) - Egg Mayo and Bacon or, as I have renamed it in Mumsnet's honour - 'the EBM' Grin

I chopped up 1 egg with about a tablespoon of mayonnaise and then snipped in a couple of rashers of crispy bacon before spreading the whole lot over the middle of a Square-ish Wrap and rolling up. It was delicious.

The wraps are lovely, much thicker than a tortilla style wrap so more substantial. They had a lovely texture too, not at all rubbery like tortilla wraps can be.

Lovesdogsandcats · 12/03/2011 13:17

We have just had lunch made with the Sandwich Thins:

Ham & Cheese Toastie

Split the thins and spread with butter/marg.
Fill with grated cheese and slices of ham.
Spray the outside with oil/spread thinly with butter/marg and cook for couple mins on a George Foreman/sandwich toastie maker/under the grill.

For hungry child serve with smokey bacon crisps!

Cheese, Tomato and Worcester Sauce Toastie

(Vegan and Dairy-free)

Split thins and spread with dairy free marg (I used Vitalite). Fill with Cheezly and slices of tomato, then splash with vegetarian Worcester Sauce.Spray the outside with oil/spread thinly with butter/marg and cook for couple mins on a George Foreman/sandwich toasie maker/under the grill.

Serve with side salad or crisps.

These were very nice, and its great to know that each one only has the same amount of calories as one slice of normal bread.

JoyceBarnaby · 12/03/2011 14:12

I definitely agree, the notebook and gift voucher were lovely and welcome additions to the 'hamper' - thanks MN/Warburtons!!

We enjoyed a selection of sandwich options for lunch today. DS (2.9) simply ate a plain sandwich thin before eating some sausage separately. However, given that he can be a bit fussy about bread, I consider this a success!!

For DH and I, I made the following:

Cheese & Onion Toastie

Mix two tablespoons of low-fat cottage cheese with a handful of mature grated cheddar and some finely chopped spring onions.

Toast the bottom of the base piece of the thin under the grill.

Turn over and spread with cheese mixture.

Toast under the grill until the cheese has all melted and the edges of the thin are started to turn brown.

Put the top piece on the top, press down gently and place back under the grill until lightly browned.

Then DH also had

Cheese, beetroot and salad sandwich

Spread bottom piece of sandwich thin generously with light cream cheese. Add slices of freshly cooked beetroot and handfuls of watercress/rocket/spinach. Put top piece on and eat!! (Hardly a recipe, is it?!)

I then opened the wraps and made a

Warm Chocolate and Banana Wrap

Spread squareish wrap generously with chocolate hazelnut spread.

Slice a banana and lay over the chocolate.

Roll up wrap and place on a microwaveable plate. Microwave for 30 seconds (in a 900w microwave - less powerful ovens might need more).

Cut in half and eat - preferably with a napkin/piece of kitchen roll to hand!!

Both DH and I really liked the Sandwich Thins. They toasted really well and held the toasted sandwich filling in better than a panini. They would be an excellent option for anyone watching their weight, as they feel more substantial than their calorie count suggests.

I liked the wrap and agree they are thicker than many normal tortilla wraps. So far, I don't think they are any better than any other kind of wrap, but I will try them toasted and see what I think then!

I will try some more ideas out over the next few days and comment more then. I'm certainly enjoying this so far!!

withagoat · 12/03/2011 14:21

gah YOUR IDEAS ARE ALL CRAP

you wait for mine
i will rock the toaster world Wink

weblette · 12/03/2011 14:28

Dcs had them 'au naturel' for lunch - ham wrap, cheese toastie, cheese and ham melt wrap.

Really like the wraps, microwaved one for the cheese/ham thing and it kept its texture well, the floured outer surface probably helped. They're far less 'doughy' than some wraps which makes them much more appealing.

The sandwich thins started to curl slightly when toasted but tasted great. Not too sure about the look of them, the perforations are a bit off-putting.

This afternoon's task for them is to get inventing. Dd has already come up with a lasagne-type thing with wraps, ds2's is bound to involve lots of chocolate!

I'm thinking more quesadilla-stylee, layered with guacamole/salsa chilli and cheese.

Blatherskite · 12/03/2011 15:30

I was going to do choclate spread and bananas too! Think I will still try them as they sound yummy :)

Blatherskite · 12/03/2011 15:32

C'mon goat - amaze us.... Grin

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/03/2011 17:15

DP insisted on having a bacon sandwiches this morning with some of them, he said they were very good :)

I tried them with philadephia, chorizo and rocket lettuce, much nicer than a normal sandwich and better flavour. I'll send photo's if you really want?

Planning a huge bacon and cheese burger with the last one.

Not used the wraps yet.

withagoat · 12/03/2011 17:21

ooh no i am saving it - in case you all copy

i have changed them a bit.

MrsKitty · 12/03/2011 18:22

Well, they're going down quite well here...

DS had the sandwich thins as a sandwich (original Hmm) yesterday-butter, cheese and ham. They stayed together well in a tupperware box (we were out & about) and he wolfed them down without the whole 'crusts issue'.

DD ate a sandwich thin just plain, which was also a success.

Tonight we had veggie pizzas, using the sandwich thins and a wrap, to see which worked best. Both good, personally I preferred the taste of the wrap for pizza, but the thins were probably easier to handle for the DC (4 and 1.5)

Recipe: Veggie Pizza
-Spread wrap or split thins with tomato puree or pizza sauce
-sprinkle finely chopped veg on top. We used red onion, sweet pepper, sliced garlic, mushrooms and sweetcorn
-sprinkle with cheese (we used cheddar, but think crumbled feta or torn mozzarella would be lovely)
-oven on a baking sheet @ 200* for around 15 mins

For pudding, we had Chocolate & marshmallow bites, based on the American 'S'mores' idea.

Recipe: Chocolate & Marshmallow bites
-Cut a wrap in half
-cover with a layer of chopped up chocolate, then a layer of mini marshmallows , then a sprinkling of chopped chocolate (Could prob use nutella instead)
-place other half of wrap on top and sprinkle with brown sugar
-wrap in foil and put in hot oven for around 10 mins until the filling is nice and gooey
-chop into bite size pieces and enjoy the silence whilst the children wonder why they're getting this much sugar for pudding!

*It's just dawned on me that you could probably do them in the microwave a lot quicker too!

Soup & Salad toppers:
If you pop half a wrap in the toaster is goes quite hard & crunchy, which is rather nice as a topping to add a bit of crunch to soups or salads. Like croutons, but different Smile.

More to come later in the week...

MrsKitty · 12/03/2011 18:22

Come on goat - spill your culinary secrets! Grin

TheSkiingGardener · 12/03/2011 21:25

Agh! You're all coming up with such good ideas!

I won't be opening them for a day or two as we are out all the time.

Ideas so far though are:

Spag Bol Wrap.

Take some bolognese sauce, a little chopped up cooked spaghetti and spread over the centre of the wrap. Sprinkle over cheddar cheese and roll up.

Dippers

The wraps look perfect for cutting into triangles, toasting and dipping in things like houmous or really runny French cheese. Could use them instead of taco shells or tortilla chips.

The sandwich thins are going to start with hard goats cheese, parma ham and red pesto and we'll see how it goes.

Wrap-stars

Ingredients: 1 egg, one wrap, pinch cinnamon, icing sugar (about a tbsp), sunflower oil.

NB one wrap made eight stars when I did this.

  1. Beat one egg and pour into a saucer
  2. Mix the icing sugar with the cinnamon
  3. Take a square(ish) wrap and a star shaped cutter.
  4. Heat the oil in a frying pan - you don't need a lot, just enough to coat the base.
  5. Cut the stars out
  6. Dip in beaten egg, then icing sugar
  7. Lay each star in the oil and turn when golden.
  8. Allow to cool for two minutes before serving to hungry toddlers who will demolish them in four minutes flat.

MNHQ - you have pics.

whomovedmychocolate · 13/03/2011 07:47

Veggie feast wrapped up

Ingredients - one packet of vegan nutloaf, 1 tbsp raisins, six dried apricots, cocktail stick, six square(ish) wraps

  1. Make up vegan nutloaf mix - you will note it needs more cooking than you'd think. Usually about 30 minutes. So cook it so it's ready. Leave to cool
  2. Crumble nutloaf and stir with raisins. Add 1 tblsp water (or tomato juice if so inclined).
  3. Lay out wraps
  4. Place a large tablespoon of nutloaf mix into each one in the centre.
  5. Drawn the corners up to the centre so you have a smaller square plus four triangles.
  6. Place apricot into centre and affix to corners using cocktail stick
  7. Bake in a hot oven (200) for 20 minutes to warm through.
  8. The extra water will mould the wrap to the centre and when you take it out, you can remove the cocktail stick.
  9. Serve with herb salad.

Only tried the squareish wraps so far going to experiment with the thins today. We were having chilli and rice, guacomole and sour cream for tea today anyway so I made to go with it

Chilli chips

Cut 2 wraps into half, then half, then half again until you have 16 squarish shapes. Cut each diagonally into chip shapes and spread on a baking sheet. Lightly mist with spray oil.

Mix half teaspoon of cumin, and half teaspoon of chilli powder (more if you like but toddler was to eat them too). Sprinkle half spice mixture on the chips and bake for 4 mins at 180degrees. Turn over, mist and use the remaining spice and cook for a fruther 4 mins.

This made enough as a side for 4 adults and 1 toddler and were very more-ish with guacamole.

Banoffee pancake

Heat 20g of butter in a pan and add 75g brown sugar, stirring until disolved. Add 150ml double cream, 2 sliced bananas and cook for a few minutes until the bananas soften and a lovely sticky caramel forms.

Meanwhile warm 2 squarish wraps sprinkled on 1 side with a small amount of brown sugar and half teaspoon of cinnamon under the grill until the sugar bubbles.

Turn the wraps over and spread with the banana mixture and roll up. There will be a little bit of caramel sauce remaining to pour over.

This was amazing!

Also, pics to follow when I work out how to upload them from my phone!

huffythethreadslayer · 13/03/2011 10:26

I got mine and am thrilled..especially as we were out of bread yesterday and it saved me going to the shop! I let DH have cheese sandwich on 2 thins, dd had a wrap.

My 10 year old is a very fussy eater, but loved the wrap. She had it plain (of course!) with cheese cubes, pepper and cucumber. Would have looked pretty on the pictures, but I figured they wouldn't want a picture of their plain wrap with 70's style party food accompaniement!!!

I've saved the rest for my magnificent cooking spot (quivers with fear as I struggle to think of something original to do with them).

It was a lovely box and the book and voucher were a complete surprise. Thanks MN and Warburtons.

Off to ponder on my recipes!!!
