Zoomchat with Helen Joyce on her new book

Hello

We’re delighted to announce a Mumsnet Zoomchat with senior staff journalist at The Economist Helen Joyce about her new book 'Trans'.

To quote the book jacket: "Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just ten years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex."

"People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining ‘man’ and ‘woman’. While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies, particularly with regard to women’s rights, fairness in sport, same sex attraction and children’s development."

Helen will be chatting with Mumsnet HQ and answering your questions on Tuesday 27 July at 8pm, and you can book your place now by registering here.

Please note We can only take questions from Zoomchat attendees on the night - please don’t ask questions in advance as we can’t promise we’ll be able to put them forwards.

Thanks
MNHQ

And @JustineMumsnet has never shared her views on this issue. She is in favour of free speech, as long as it is respectful.

Good to hear you on the chat. JKR is an excellent shout.

MedusasButterDish · 27/07/2021 21:37

Wow, that was great. I have listened to a number of interviews with Helen Joyce, but each of them turns out a bit different, showing BOTH how well she has assimilated the consequences AND how many different audiences there are!

Loved hearing Mumsnetters' voices! Flowers

PamDenick · 27/07/2021 21:44

I’m sorry I couldn’t join you.
But I’d love to join another one some time.
Also let’s hear another voice: Emma Watson? But I’d love one with JKR...

I couldn't work out how to change my name! Blush

ADialgaAteMyDog · 27/07/2021 21:54

Thank you! That was great and I feel so much more positive about the future than I have done.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 27/07/2021 22:28

Thank you MNHQ, that was excellent. I hope Helen’s words about Mumsnet’s role in the feminist fightback made you proud.

altforvarmt · 27/07/2021 23:04

Thank you for hosting such a great discussion.

corkernewyorker · 28/07/2021 06:18

I echo the thanks from others. That was a really great and enlightening discussion. Would any data be available about the number of attendees to the chat? I'd be so interested to know how many attended.

PamDenick · 28/07/2021 20:51

Just reading through. SO well researched, especially the early attempts at surgery...

So would I! Also their location - one of the questions was from someone in Australia.
HereticFanjo · 29/07/2021 15:49

My copy of the book has arrived - looking forward to it!

sharp51 · 30/07/2021 06:54

The book is wonderful!

PamDenick · 31/07/2021 12:10

Janice Turner makes reference to it in today’s Times.

Enough4me · 01/08/2021 23:36

On Twitter, I saw that Helen asked if it was hard to get hold of copies in bookstores, it shouldn't be as a top 10. It should be in window displays.

I'm normally an online shopper, but planning on looking out and reporting back.

PamDenick · 02/08/2021 10:16

I got mine from Waterstones if that helps.
I did have to order it though.

Enough4me · 02/08/2021 20:42

It shouldn't need to be ordered though. In the top 10 copies should be available.

PamDenick · 02/08/2021 20:45

No, it shouldn’t need to be ordered.

Enough4me · 06/08/2021 22:43

The Times has referred to the problem of Waterstones not keeping them in stock and 'excuses' for not being able to get copies in. Still available on Amazon.

cariadlet · 13/08/2021 11:50

Caboodle (National Book Tokens) have got a competition where you can upload a photo of your summer reads. I put Trans on top of my pile.

When you go on the website, you can look at the gallery to see what everyone else is reading.

Might be worth entering just so that bookworms who aren't following the trans debate might become more aware of the book.

BingBongSong · 15/08/2021 08:31

Got a copy off the shelf in Waterstones yesterday - it was facing front, but the only copy there.
